Tonight we are going to a roller skating rink for dd's school. She is in kindergarten and loves to skate. In the fall when the school had another skate night all the parents were commenting how it had been years since they had skated and missed doing it. Seems most were in their 30's like I am. I loved to skate when I was in elementary school and never skipped a year without having my birthday party at Skateland! :yay:

I'm sure I can't be the only one who has fond memories of the roller rinks from the past. I have so many songs that immediately bring back the good old roller days. "Another one Bites the Dust" is one of them!

Do you think she will be embarrassed if I attempt to "shoot the duck"?:rotfl2:

Certain songs remind me of those days, remember April Wines "Just between you and Me?" or Bad Company's "Rock n' Roll Fantasy" when I hear those songs I think of those ancient times.

OMG- I love to roller skate and it was so long ago that I did it. My favorite song in the world is "Private Eyes" by Hall and Oates. Remember how you used to lift your leg up and clap during the song? I had Smurf rollerskates with blue pom poms.

Hmmm...maybe that was TMI:blush:

Oh and the Hokey Pokey! And the 4 corner game! The bubble looking lights on the floor used to make me dizzy.

Oh I want to go now!

There are two main roller skating places in the area and we have been to both of them recently for birthday parties.

Both places still have the same stuff as the did over 20 years ago when we went as kids. The skates, the carpet, eewwww.

I have fond memories of skating at the skating rink. It has been over 30 years since I have had skates on my feet.

I still have my skates-White boots with hot pink laces and matching hot pink wheels! I LOVE skating. I really miss it. We had a great rink in my hometown and everyone learned to skate there as part of PE class in elementary school. It closed in the mid 1990s, and I was really bummed. My friends and I went every Friday night in junior high and the beginning of high school, until they closed. My students are all into rollerblading and skate at the local rec center on Fridays, but it's an event for the kids, and I'd be REALLY out of place! I wonder why the roller rinks are all closing? There used to be one near our house here that closed in 2003, one near my sister's that closed in 2005, and one in Augusta (capital city) that closed last year.

My goddaughter just had her 10th birthday party last weekend at a skating rink her mama and I both had our parties around that age. It blew her mind thinking that they had those parties that "long ago"

Skating was what we did in high school every weekend!!! I had so much fun!!!:hippie:

I remember the smurf rollerskates. I was not lucky enough to have those puppies!:rotfl:

I did the couples only skate once and the guy tripped me from then on I always pretended I had to go to the bathroom when they would announce "Couples Only Skate" :rotfl2:

My sister and I used to rollerskate all the time. It was so cool because we could skate backwards.
We made a skate routine to the disco song "Shake Your Groove Thing". We could hold hands and spin in a circle. We thought we were cool. :lmao:
We practiced in the alley behind our home. We only had metal roller skate wheels though, not the cool rubber wheel skate with the rubber stopper.
I was jealous of those kids. We had to rent skates when we went to the rink.

I rollerskated every weekend when I was younger. It wouldn't be unusual for me to be at the rink on Fri night, Sat and Sun afternoon on the same weekend! I had tennis shoe roller skates, white with red addidas like stripes, red wheels and red pom-poms!

DH tried to rent out a rink near our house for my 30th birthday but they wouldn't let him. He didn't think I wanted 30 something adults partying it up next to some kid's Power Rangers birthday party at the same time so he nixed it and took me away to Cape Cod instead.

Oh well. It was a great idea though!

We were lucky enough to skate every night and from 10am until 2am on Sat allday Sun as well.

When I was about 12 until I was 17 my Dad helped run a Skateland. We had the run of the rink and even drove our motorcycles in it during breaks in the day. Some Sat nights we would just bring our sleeping bags and stay the night.

RollerBounce the movie brought back so many great memories as we were sorta the outsider coming from the city to a very wealthy area the rink was in.

I so miss it and even still have a pair of my good kangaroo hyde skates that strech with my feet. i had skates for figure,Disco,Speed, and few outdoor ones. They couldn't pay me for working so they gave me my choice of skates and wheels until I was 14 then I started to get paid.

I still today enjoy running into people from that time in my life as it was such a fun time.

Do you think she will be embarrassed if I attempt to "shoot the duck"?:rotfl2:

I think this is the funniest thing Ive read on the DIS, though Im a bit frightened as its bringing back leg warmer filled memories!:rotfl:

Remember the song "turn your love around"
and everyone would turn around & skate backwards:rotfl: :rotfl:

I used to love to go to the skating rink. All the kids would go on Friday's after school and on Sat. afternoon. Afterwards, we would go to White castle's for some burgers. I remember if you went to the first session on Sat. which lasted about 2 hours, you can pay like $2 and stay for the next session.

DS8 had a skate party not too long ago and I wanted to see if I still had it. I put the skates on and it took me a while to get used to it. I decided to go on the skate floor but stayed in the middle so no one will knock me down. Well, as I was skating to get to the middle, this little boy was in my way and I couldn't stop in time and next thing I knew BOOM, I was on the floor. I fell flat on my butt with my legs stretched out in front of me and the wheels on the skates were still turning. I fell so hard I got a headache. After I managed to get up and leave the floor, I just went and sat back down.

Ahhh the memories:

The guys with their Angel Flight pants, Members Only jackets, the girls with our Che'MenDa'fer (sp?)Jeans, baby blue sparkly eye liner and our hair cuts with the wings that would fly while we were "rexing" around the rink on Friday & Saturday nights at Aloha Roller Palace..............

The smell of AquaNet was very strong, smoking was only permitted in the "Smoking Rooms"..............

My skates were white with pink pom poms.

Our local rink is a total dump but we still take the kids periodically.

I remember those days as well! When I was in middle school they used to have a rollerskating night every year. I used to look forward to those nights.

We had a few rollerskating rinks near us and the last one closed down about 2 years ago. The one I remember going to the most was called 2002 and the song I remember skating to is "Dirty Laundry" by Don Henley (I think that's the title and it could have been The Eagles :confused3 ).

<sigh> How I miss those days! I still have my rollerskates that I got when I was 14 (the boot kind in white).
