my son lives in Oahu and passed along a said story.

A young 4 year old boy was found unconscious at the bottom of a pool at Aluani today and is in serious condition. They did revive him and that's all the details released as of yet.

Say a prayer for this family.

Wow, that is so sad. I'm shocked. There were so many lifeguards around. We saw one rescue of a young girl (about 3) who got in the pool when her parents weren't watching. Kids move so fast and can get in the water quickly even when parents are being very vigilant. Unfortunately, we also saw a lot of young kids unattended, with parents who seemed to think the existence of lifeguards meant they did not have to pay attention. Prayers for this family that all turns out ok.

Unfortunately, we have witnessed this scenario in person. Last July at Disney's Art of Animation they pulled a little 3 year old boy out of the pool unresponsive. The paramedics worked on him for a long time to the point where the paramedic straddled the boy on the gurney and continued giving cpr as they were both pushed into the ambulance. It was too late, the boy was dead. I am not ashamed to say that I cried along with many other people who were there.
Same vacation a few days later the lifeguards noticed 2 girls aged 8 and 5 alone in the pool and pulled them out to sit beside him. The cm's tried their best to find the mother but no such luck.
Over an hour later she comes slowly strolling into the pool area holding several shopping bags from the gift shop as the girls make a mad dash towards her. Immediately she was surrounded by security (I was amazed at how fast they got there) and they pulled her to the side.

I couldn't bring myself to "like" this as its too sad, but thank you for sharing.

It can happen so quickly. I posted this story on another drowning thread when the AoA drowning happened, but I personally know a few stories like this. Once I was at a pool with my husband and son, it was not a big pool and there were 2 lifeguards and only one other dad there with his daughter. A dad came in with his 2 or 3 year old son and left his son sitting by the edge of the pool while he walked away a few steps to get the kid's goggles. The kid slipped into the pool SILENTLY and neither myself, my husband, the dad with his daughter or either of the lifeguards noticed. It was the manager walking in who saw and yelled, and then the dad with the daughter reached over and grabbed the kid.

Another family I know was at a party filled with DOCTORS when a 4 year old drowned, Mom was nursing baby and thought he was with dad, dad thought he was with mom.

It's horrible, it can happen to anyone, you just have to stay vigilant.

Full of thumb when near open water children should ALWAYS be arms length from you at most. This includes passing off to another parent. Our community pool will tell parents at our pool if there child has not passed the swimming test their child must be in arms length and the only allow US Coast Guard approved flotation devices. Sadly kids can slip away even when vigilant. Unfortunately there are many parents who when on vacation forget they are never on vacation from parenting.

Don't ever forget DROWNING IS A SILENT THING. Most people think that people who are in trouble will flail their arms and scream like in the movies. The problem is that isn't true for 99% of cases. Even in an empty pool in the time a lifeguard may focus attention to scan to another point a child could fall in or just get too tired and float down.

So sad to hear that another family has to deal with a drowning tragedy while on vacation.

Actually, I wouldn't say it's 99% true, as drowning isn't always silent. There are two types of drowning: active (the arm flailing kind, but definitely not much screaming as their lungs are becoming filled with fluid) and the passive kind (the silent one you referred to). As a lifeguard, it's crazy nerving to watch both happen--it's no fun at all.
