We have a 42" Magnavox plasma TV in our family room. The picture went out on Wednesday, July 21. We had sound but no picture. DH did the troubleshooting, and we even tried a DVD but still sound and no picture so he called about it as we had purchased the 3-year extended warranty for $59 from Target when we bought the TV.

The warranty was running out the following Tuesday! So they set up an appointment with us for a repairman to come out, which he did yesterday, the 30th. Had to move the set down to the floor, leaning against the couch for him to work on. He took the back off and started testing things. New parts are going to cost $350, and his estimated labor is $500!! :scared1:

The parts will be delivered to our house but the repairman couldn't make an appointment with us to come back until August 11th. :(

It sure is hard to try and watch the tiny little 19" TV we had to bring in from the kitchen. Especially if it's a movie in letterbox format! The screen is already teeny tiny, and then has black lines on top and bottom. We're pretty spoiled by the bigger screen and sure wish it wasn't taking so l-o-n-g to get it repaired. *sigh*

What's the point of the warranty then if you still need to pay $850 in parts & labor?

New TV might be cheaper.

I second that...

Our Magnavox LCD tv died early this year, and after looking it up online we found out that this happens a LOT with Magnavox lcd tvs and they don't even acknowledge it is a prob even if you have a warranty. Heh, kindof a good thing we didn't buy an extended one after I read about that. So instead of spending 400 dollars to have it repaired, we spent about 500 bucks on a brand new tv that was about 6 inches bigger then our previous one. New lcd TVs are WAY cheaper then they were a few years ago.

Oh, no, no, no. We don't have to pay a penny. The TV is under warranty. Sorry if I didn't explain it well.

And it says on our contract that if they can't fix it they will replace it. For the money it's going to cost I think they should just give us a new TV. :)

FMI: Is this the manufacturer's warranty, or an extended warranty?

Also: Was there any provisions in the warranty for time-line for repair?

BTW, A new 42" Magnavox 1080p LCD, with a built-in BD player, is on sale at Amazon.com for $799.99. Without the player, it's $749.99. However, those are LCDs. Magnavox no longer makes plasma HDTVs. That may be why they are doing a repair instead of replacement.

Please do not take my previous message as any kind of recommendation in Magnavox's favor. The OP's experience is indicative of a general lack of quality and reliability you can expect from the Magnavox brand. Magnavox electronics are often just Funai electronics, with the Magnavox brand applied to them. Funai is known throughout the industry as the maker of inferior equipment, cutting corners and such, significantly undercutting quality and reliability. Brands that Funai electronics can be found under are Sylvania, Emerson Radio, Magnavox, Philip, Pye, and Symphonic; and sometimes Sharp, Toshiba, and Denon.
