Religion.

I'm technically Anglican, I was baptised and confirmed with the Anglican church.

But my faith and relationship with God are more based on my morals and personal beliefs than anything in the Bible.

I believe there is a God, or Higher Being, but I don't necessarily believe in the Bible...and after a year of confirmation classes, I STILL don't understand how a man being nailed to a cross absolves us of our sins??? :confused3

Anyways, I do pray sometimes, just to thank God for blessing me with my family and everything, and to ask forgiveness or guidance and to keep my family safe.

My relationship with God is much more informal than what I learned in church, but my God (or my version of God) is pretty chill.
And I personally believe that God is what you make him, to me, God is pretty cool and chilled out, but to someone else he may be all strict and stuff.
I know that probably sounds really....well, incorrect i guess to some people to are hardcore followers of organized religions, but to ME, God and faith and religion is what you make it, and it's there for you to do what you want with it.

Does that make any sense at all?

Yeah. To me, God is pretty much my conscience. He's the guy that tells me "you really shouldn't be doing that..." or whatever. And I can have little conversations with him in the back of my head and he can tell me what to do. Because there's a little bit of God in each of us. At least, that's what I think.

Sometimes if I'm stressed out about something, I'll just yell it to him in my head before I go to sleep. I don't have to be kneeling or anything. I'll just tell him my problem and it feels like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. And then if there's something I feel bad about, I'll just say sorry. I know he'll forgive me.. that's what he does.

If every little thing we did wrong sent us to Hell, then there'd be absolutely no one in Heaven.

I say I'm a Christian but iono..I sure as heck don't believe in evolution. It makes no sense whatsoever.

We were just discussing it in Sunday School earlier.
It's one of the good things about having a gay priest.
She's really open-minded to everyone's views, and she doesn't have this big-guy-with-a-white-beard view of God or anything.

I say I'm a Christian but iono..I sure as heck don't believe in evolution. It makes no sense whatsoever.

Hmm, really?
I mean, that's fine. You can believe whatever you want, but evolution makes perfect sense to me.
We're still evolving, if you think about it. People are a heck of a lot taller than they were a hundred years ago.

I'm totally not knocking you opinion at all so I hope you don't take this personally or offensively, just simply stating my opinion as well.

I'm not sure I necessarily believe in evolution, but evolution and natural selection make total and perfect sense to me.
So much sense that it is a main component as to why I don't really believe in the Bible, to me the Bible is just a bunch of bedtime stories. (And again people PLS don't take this offensilvey, just my humble opinion)

I'm sure it's different for everyone though! :goodvibes

Well, yeah. The Bible is a book of stories, that explain things.
Like those Native American stories with how the moon got in the sky and stuff.
I believe in many of the principles that the Bible tries to teach. I just don't believe it word for word for word.

Like, when it says we have "dominion" over the Earth.
That's a VERY rough translation. If they translated it as "stewardship," it would make a lot more sense. Because now people interpret it as "oh, we have to chop trees down because the Bible tells us so. We have DOMINION!!"

But you have to remember HOW MANY TIMES the Bible has been translated... things can change. It's like a game of Telephone. It starts as "she sells seashells by the seashore" and ends up as "my sandwich has a purple banana."

Hi, another atheist here. Rised as an... agnostic? Though both my parents were some sort of christian, or raised as such, thankfully they do not like organized religion and me and my sisters were never brainwashed.

Personally, I have a low opinion of religion, spirituallity, and the supernatural (note, I have a problem with religion, not religious people). Though creationism/ID really is what bugs me, as I love genetics, paleobiology and evolutionary science in general. Most proponents of creationism demonatrate such a low or even non-existant understanding of evolution that it makes me wonder if people even atend bio in school.

Like when people ask "If we evolved from monkeys, why are there still monkeys?" :sad2: It just like asking "If I came from my parents, why are my cousins still alive?". (we never evolved from monkeys, we evolved from a common ancestor in the primate family, and we are the current result from different evolutionarty paths.)

What, is being an ape not good enough for some people? Apes are cool!

Sorry for the rant, that just really bugs me.

Well, Mom was raised Christian, but is kinda agonist/athiest now (VERY liberal).

Dad was raised Roman Catholic, believes in God and all, but is liberal enough (ie doesn't mind homosexuals, etc).

Me? Athiest.

We NEVER went to Church when I was growing up, therefore, I never went to Sunday School, made my First Communion, etc.

All my friends are like, "Oh ick I have CCD tonight" and all...I just kinda sit there...

I mean, I was baptized, but that was it really...

So I wasn't brought up religious (celebrated Easter and Christmas, but no church masses).

Therefore, I never believed in God. Not even as a child.

I won't deny that JC was real, but...I just don't believe in the teachings, the..."God says this" and "God says THIS can't be true" and all.

Evolution, baby, is mah thing.

The poster (spacing on name) who said that the Bible is like a game of Telephone is dead-on. It's been translated from Greek and Hebrew to English, Spanish, Italian, Russian, German, and who-knows-what-else. So how do we know what is correct or not? (Correct meaning, from the original Bible)

IMO, the Bible is a book; nothing more and nothing less.

People should be allowed to believe what they want, and not be judged/bashed for it.

Now, back to your regular debating/chatting :)

Here's a random question (for those that believe in it)

If a man did bad things all his life because Hell was his vision of Heaven, would that mean he would end up in Heaven because it's his vision of Hell?

About Communion, at one of the churches I went to (yeah, i've gone to probably 4-5 churches regularly at some point) and at my primary school, they gave us this circle, white wafer and wine (which was unhygenic since we drank it from the same cup) and I liked the wafer more then the wine. Wish the wafer came after the wine -_-

im Christian but i go to a Catholic church

im not sure if i even believe half of the things they preach
sometimes i think religion is just a way to explain things that cant be proven
:confused3

I'm seriously just wondering. Did your parents plan to raise you in church? If not, why would they baptise you?

I think they felt they had to, because my Dad's parents are Roman Catholic. Then, Dad took a full-time job that had (and still has) him working on Sundays, so Mom and I never got around to Church. By the time I was old enough for Sunday School, they just decided not to. (Also, since Mom's not really a believer, the whole Church thing didn't fly with her)

Yea, I figured it was probably pressure from family or something like that. Thanks for answering! :goodvibes

I know this is none of my business & what I am about to post is not directed at any Catholics here.

One thing that annoys me about many people is like that up there. My parents baptized me at a young age but we barely came back to church. It was as if baptizing me would like guarantee me a place in heaven. I just don't like people like that, people who only pray to their god when they need something; how selfish is that? Or people that start going to church just because they need something or something wrong is going on in their lives. That's why the Catholic religion never appealed to me, rather than say I'm Athiest, I'll say that I'm just looking for the "right" religion for me.

Hrm. Well, I've been raised as an atheist, but I'm not really an atheist...

I don't pray or ever really think about higher beings, but I do believe that there's something there. I don't believe in the biblical God, he seems spiteful. I don't believe in Jesus because I simply cannot believe that somebody rose from the dead.

I definitly, definitly believe in reincarnation. But I believe that you go some where before you're reincarnated, kind of like a Heaven, where you meet up with your old family and friends and then can wait as long as you like before you're reincarnated. Maybe you even plan what you're going to be born as up there. But I think you stay the same gender your entire life. A little far fetched, I know, it's just what I believe.

If I had to choose a religion to be a part of, it would be a pagan religion. To me they seem the most believable.
