Religion

I am a mother of a teen. I am very proud of all the teens on these boards. Talking about your spirituality becomes increasing important as you age. Organized religion isn't necessarily the same thing as SPIRITUALITY. Keep an open mind! You are all awesome. Blessings, S

So what religion do you follow? I am an atheist.
How did you begin believing in this religion? Its not a religion, but I began not believing any religion after...well...really I dunno. Religion had no place for me in it, and I had no place for it in my life. I don't view organized religion in a very good light, after the way the worshipers of several denominations have treated me. I would never bash another's religion though, after the way that I've been attacked.
Do you regularly attend a "place of worship"? no.

Well my mom's parents are born-again Christians. My dad's family is Jewish. My dad is Athiest, and my mom is Agnostic. So I'm agnostic. I believe there might be something out there. I just don't know what. I find religions (for myself) hard to believe.

I'm Christian well Church of England, my mum and nan are as well, I don't go to church all the time but I go some times.h

My daughter and I are Wiccan. It's the worship of God/Goddess thru nature. S

Shylock was great. Why don't you like him?

I appologize :offtopic:

I haven't really established a strong opinion of Shylock yet, but as he is portrayed right now (I'm not even in Act 3 yet) he seems rather greedy lol. However, even though I may not "like" this character yet, I am very interested in his complexity. I mean...that is quite a bargain he has going with Antonio and I have every curiosity to find out what happens.

I also understand that this play was written to be performed in front of Adolf Hitler and so there are some very prominent anti-semitic views in this character, but that was only done so the actors wouldn't be shot lol.

I don't know about Shylcck yet. I have an open mind for him, but as of right now...despite my growning interest for the "character", I don't think I would like this man very much lol. I will let you know what I think of him when I finish the play. ;)

hmm well i was raised presbytrian (sp?) until i reached the age of reason, now ive realized i dont really like religion its seems like a way for me to cope with death and life and well i guess i dont need a book to tell me that i can handle it and when i die i believe it will be a lot like before i was born a whole lot of nothingness and im perfectly ok with that, sounds terrible i know but i just cant buy into the whole religious ideals

I won't give away too much, but Shylock is treated incredibly unfairly, solely based on the fact that he's Jew.

Do what religion do you follow? Lutheran

How did you begin believing in this religion? My dad's Catholic (and hated it) and my mom's Lutheran..when they got married they basically decided Lutheran was easier..

Do you regularly attend a "place of worship"? No

eh looks like i'm the only lutheran on here.

we have to go to confirmation for three years. and i'm getting confirmed next year. we're not like strict rules can't do anything. actually we're not strict rules at all.

so i like my religion.

but i don't go to church most of the time.

Nope you're not the only Lutheran on here..

Oh I know. I see that already in the first two acts. But like I said before, it was supposed to be that way. Shakespeare ALWAYS considered his audience...and with this play, his audience was Hitler and Nazi Germany. You know, when this play is acted out, Shylock is presented as having a huge nose and being hideous. Much to Hitler's pleasure. :sad2:

I think I have heard theories that this play also down plays Christianity. (I love how this off topicness is scratching the topic lol). But I have yet to see that.

Shakespeare wasn't writing The Merchant of Venice for the nazis.

There are parts where is really does expose the evils of the Christians of that time. Near the end the Christians have to resort to lies to defeat Shylock.

Edit: And of course there's always the famous speech that's in my signature.

My parents were both Lutherans. I was confirmed in the church, but since alot of things have happened, we decided to go to a non-denominational one instead.

I am a Southern Baptist. We like to eat. :p

I go to church every Sunday, and most Wednesdays. I would either have to be sick, or there be snow on the ground to keep me away.

I've been going to church ever since I could crawl. I cannot remember a time that I was not in church.

The play was written and then it was played out to show the Jews in a lesser light because it was being performed in front of Hitler. Showing Jews in a decent light would have been considered defeatism and that was penalty of death.

You know what? I am even sure I know enough about that single area to debate it lol. I just know what I know about that. lol.

I will be interested to talk more about this with you once I finish the play, I sort of feel in a ditch not being able to support more of what I think lol.

Yay, a fellow baptist.:)

I am a baptist. We call ourselves the back-row baptists because we always fill in the pews from back to front.

We found the church when my friend invited me to church with me one sunday. I told my mom how much I loved it, and we've been going ever since. I've formed some of my best friendships at my church.

I go to church almost every sunday, unless we are not home to go or if I'm sick. I also attend youth group on sunday nights.

Someone said that they believe the Catholic religion has made modern changes.

Why do you believe this?

Well, the first thing that jumps to mind is now there can be female alter-servers. It's not a huge change, but it's a start. The Vatican isn't filled with a bunch of idiots. They realize that if the church is going to survive it's going to have to make a few changes. Two that I stongly believe will happen in our lifetime is allowing priests to marry and allowing women priests. There has been a decline in the amount of priests for quite a while now. Mark my words, the church will make some changes.

Though, I doubt many of the views will change.
