Regional Sandwiches

Never heard of either of the first mentioned sandwiches... WHen I moved here to Ga, people were eating tomato sandwiches....yuk. LOL

When I was growing up in Ca, we had mayo and banana sandwiches, but I dont know if that was a regional thing...or a broke thing

Mmmm. I love tomato sandwiches. I used to eat them growing up in Michigan. My mom would butter the bread. Now I just eat them with bread, tomatoes, and salt.

Here in Philly it is the Philly cheesesteak. I have had them in other places and trust me they are not Philly cheesesteaks. It has to do with the rolls and the meat.

I agree. I know folks from Philly who started a place in NC, and Las Vegas who say they make Philly Cheesesteaks, but having had them, I would say that they are "close, but no cigar".

Extemely locally, in a town called Norristown, we have a sandwhich called a "zep".... similar to a hoagie or sub. But the difference I was told by a place that makes them, is that they must be on round rolls, include salami, and include onions.

I went to school in Baltimore and there was a guy that made "philly cheesesteaks" He was a friend of a friend so we went there one night with some locals to investigate. As soon as we walked in we were like 'now you know better calling them authentic if you don't have the right stuff.' Fortunately he did so we kept him busy for at least 4 years. But I hate when folks want to call them authentic, they are from the area and know full well that isn't authentic.

I have been burned and no longer eat them outside of the area.

Taylor ham, egg, and cheese (on a hard roll - egg is fried) is popular here in NJ.

:lovestrucI'm from NJ and boy do I miss a good Taylor Ham, egg and cheese on a hard roll! Here in Ohio, no Taylor Ham, and no hard rolls!

When I lived in Nebraska, we loved Runzas!

I grew up in NW Indiana, about an hour from Chicago, and definitely remember tenderloin sandwiches. It's funny, so many things I never knew were regional until I left. I though everyone knew what an Italian Beef was and that everyone knew how to make pizza. I guess that's another thread;)

I've never had a "real" Philly Cheesesteak. That's one I'd like to try

....By the way, the Beef on Weck sounds wonderful.

You're making me miss them!!! (I went to school near Buffalo.)

I live in Massachusetts now, and lots of places here make a turkey sandwich with stuffing and cranberry sauce. - It goes by different names, but it's basically Thanksgiving on a roll. (I don't love it myself, but DH does.)

must have been a broke thing ;), I never heard of one and lived in CA for 29 years.

I've never lived anywhere that had a regional sandwich (that I know of). In California, turkey and avocado was really popular in the 80's, and people from out of state thought it was wierd, so maybe that would be considered one? :confused3 Or at least at first, now them have them in lots of areas. Got to be real avocado or guacamole, though. One place in Colorado says they have guacamole for their sandwiches, but they squeeze it out of a bottle!! :scared1: :scared: Nasty stuff! :rotfl2:

I have never tried an Italian beef, Beef on Weck or Philly Cheesesteak, but I love a Cuban sandwich when I'm in Florida!

mmm! we used to make those at home with Thanksgiving leftovers!

In Michigan--the olive burger. Anyone else have these? I've lived a lot of different places and Michigan is the only place I've seen them. Frankly, I find them revolting but my sister MUST order one if she sees it on the menu. :lmao:

We have Garbage Plates in Rochester. Not really sandwiches, but it's the closest thing. Even an hour away from Buffalo and the Beef on Wick isn't really the same. I mean, they're tasty, but I had one in Buffalo and they don't even come close to what we have here!

mmm, Beef on Wick and Nick Tahou's...I'm so hungry now. Tortellini for dinner isn't going to take care of this craving. I never knew that Beef on Wick wasn't common everywhere growing up. We had it for every party/funeral/graduation/wedding or baby shower. My IL's had no clue what it was.

Around here there are loads of Philly cheesesteaks and also "Barbeque Sandwiches" Barbeque beef or pulled pork. I've never had a cheesesteak in Philly, but maybe I should make a point of it one of these days...

Oh I love Olive burgers. I grew up in Southwest Michigan and we called them "deluxe burgers" there. I've never found them anywhere else. I make my own at home.

I've lived here my whole life and never had one... I think. What are they exactly? Life olive loaf?

They're just a regular hamburger with mayo, tomato, lettuce, and sliced green olives. Oh, they're so good.

As a Previous poster said, the lobster roll is pretty popular around here. I would also say that the Italian Sub is pretty popular around Boston.
