Reggie Bush and the Heisman

I think he should have to give back the Heisman and I think that Pete Caroll should be banned for a specific number of years from coaching at the college level after his coaching in the NFL flops.

He knew what was going on and ran like a thief in the night to the NFL because he knew the blade was going to drop on his head.

I love the idea of banning Pete Caroll from coaching at the college level for a number of years.

I have no respect for the man. He jumped ship as soon as he realized what was going to happen.

Gifts did not affect they way he played. He still deserves the Heisman for his talent on the field.

Actually Shaun Alexander was the one who earned it on the field. In 2005 he rushed for almost 1900 yards and had 28 total TDs. And since Alexander was as eligible to receive the Heisman as Bush was, it's only fair he receive the award.

Oh please! They need to get over themselves!
Just a statement of fact. Virtually no USC students could complete at Stanford. I love Reggie - but he could not have cut it at Stanford on academics. Does great on the field though.

I hope lots of players are getting 'gifts'. The problem with college sports aren't the players or the agents. It's the system. Schools are making millions. Coachers are making millions. I bet the hesman club makes money.

I'm not saying the schools should give the Reggie Bushes money. But to ban him from getting money on his own, even while he's busting his buTt to make them rich???? And then to be upset when he did???? Give me a break.

USC feels they have to give Reggie's heisman back because he made a few bucks. But they are keeping OJ's

exactly... the NCAA is a joke. They make multi-millions off college sports, yet try to do so much as buy a college athlete lunch and they freak out. The agents / school boosters / etc who give the gifts/money/etc also know the rules, yet they walk away with no punishment either. If they really want to get serious about it, they will take those individuals to court and sue them for willfully breaking NCAA rules. That's the only way it's going to stop. Until then, who cares... placing sanctions on the school years after the athlete or coach in question has left does nothing but punish innocent athletes from participating in post season tournaments/championships. It'd be like throwing the kids of a bank robber in jail for what their father did.

My understanding is that under the circumstances, Reggie Bush should not have been eligible to play much less win the Heisman trophy b/c he broke the rules. If he really wasn't eligible, than he shouldn't get to keep it IMO.

good post. whether or not athletes should get paid or not is not the issue here. the issue is that he broke the rules and cheated the system as it exists now. he should get it back. we can debate about paying athletes all day long.

He broke an NCAA rule - a rule that is borderline immoral. If the NCAA wants to punish him for breaking their stupid rule, fine.

But why should the private Heisman club punish him for breaking a stupid NCAA rule?? He was the most outstanding college football player, which is what the award is for. It's not for the most outstanding player who didn't happen to violate any of the thousands of NCAA rules and regulations.

His primary "sin" was getting his mother a nice place to live. If the NCAA thinks that evil, that's their business. No need for a private club to go along with such thinking.

Oh come on! That comment just sounds like sour grapes to me. You don't know me or my academic performance. I never applied to Stanford because I did not want to go. Oh, it's so not even worth discussing any more. I hate to tell you this, but USC does not consider Stanford to be a rival of ours anyway. Our rival is with UCLA and Notre Dame.

Excellent posts! :thumbsup2

The hypocrisy of the NCAA has always astounded me. They try to run it like a business but they punish anyone else who tries to do the same. Don't get me wrong, there needs to be standards to live up, especially in academics and recruiting but what Reggie Bush did had no impact on his abilities on the field.

USC became the butt of many Stanford jokes when they filed an official complaint with NCAA accusing Stanford of illegal recruitment tactics. Stanford actually had the audacit to promise an education!!!!

I never went to college so maybe I am wrong, but I believe the word is audacity. ;)

I don't have an opinion about Reggie and the Heisman, I just know DH (a Saints fan ) definitely will.

Unless you went to Stanford, they are too highly educated to use all the letters when replying on a mere internet message board... :goodvibes

What does everyone think about this? I know that USC is returning their copy of his Heisman Trophy but do you think Reggie Bush should return his as well? I'm sort of on the fence about it, and think he put the work in to get the award but he did accept gifts, some worth a lot of money. I tend to think the team should and is taking the brunt of the punishment but should he take responsibility as well? I wonder if he will be stripped of the award?

Appropriate comparison.

Stanford competes with Harvard, Yale and Princeton not USC, UCLA or Notre Dame.

My niece graduated with high honors from USC. I love her dearly but she is not the smartest kid on the block. She couldn't even make 500 on the SATs.

OJ (another fine USC product) is basically illiterate. Of course there are some very smart kids that go to USC - but it's not exactly a requirement for admission.

I was speaking about athletic rivalry. I always feel such pity for people who blindly hate another group. Really, it's just another University. Why so jealous? Surely there are more important things? I'm off this thread. Enjoy that Stanford degree!

there are MANY schools which only require a heartbeat for admission......

They were talking athletic rivals....not in the classroom, which you should have been able to figure out.

Stanford doesnt compete in sports with any of the schools you listed.
