I have a call into the vet but Jude is on Peroxicam for his bladder cancer. I gave him his famotidine 45 minutes ago and then tried to feed him. He looks like he wants to eat, wags his tail but doesn't. I gave him his canned food which he usually likes. Didn't want it. I made him an omelet with cheese, which he likes, only licked it. I heated up a left over spoon roast and cut it in little piece with gravy, wasn't interested. I got him to eat 4 slices of American cheese. Is that enough food in his stomach for Peroxicam which is an NSAID? I am in tears.

Don't panic just yet. HE just may be having an off moment. I'd give him the meds. It may upset his tummy later on but if it's just one dose with the cheese I think you'll be ok. Will he drink a little milk?

Thank you. the vet called back and said if he has had his famotidine, he should be okay and if that's the best we can do, we just have to do the best. This is the first morning that I have been upset in a while. He has been eating, peeing, riding in the car, being himself and to see him not eat brought me back to the reality of the situation. I put his food on the dishwasher door and not in his dog dish so he thinks its food we eat. That was working.

 Keep doing what your doing, Dawn. I love that you were able to trick him into thinking his food was yours! I'll have to remember that one.

Baby food can sometimes work too...the turkey, chicken, etc. Praying for your baby.

Your post reminds so much of the time when our Boxer was on his way to the Rainbow Bridge. It was so painful. I will never forget sitting on the kitchen floor letting him eat yogurt off a spoon just to get him to eat when he had his off days. I would lick that spoon and look at me like I was the greatest mommy in the world.

Thats a good idea. I will take him for a ride in the car and then he may feel like eating when he gets home. He LOVES riding in the car. When I tell him he is going, he grabs a toy and heads to the door. He is so gentle. He has a lot of plush toys and he still has the same stuffed red lobster that he came to our home with.

I also spoon fed baby food to my dog when she was very sick & didn't want to eat the foods she usually loved. Prayers for Jude - I'm so sorry he's going through this.

I'm sorry to hear Jude isn't eating well today. We recently lost one of our goldens and it was devistating. I'm really pulling for Jude.
But I had to laugh at putting his food on the dishwasher door to make him think it's people food.

Thank you everyone. I tried vanilla ice cream and vanilla yogurt. No interest. Maybe I will swing through McDonalds and see if he wants a plain double cheeseburger.

Dawn, I have been following your thread but haven't replied. I am so sorry about Jude. I want to share with you something we do for our 17 year old dachshund. I make her a meatloaf a couple of times a week, but it is a rather special recipe as it has brown sugar in it. She likes the sweetness of the meat. When I give it to her, I mash it up really fine and add some chicken broth then heat it in the microwave. Honestly, this what she likes the best. Sometimes, I boil a chicken and add some of that with the meatloaf. Sometimes, she eats slices of sandwich meat with the meatloaf, but she always has the meatloaf. This is my recipe, but it really has no measurements, so you can play around with it.

1 pound of ground beef
1 can of tomato soup
brown sugar (I use a good 1/4 cup if not more...she does like the sweetness)
1 egg
oatmeal (just pour enough to bind it together..she likes the oatmeal so I add quite a bit)
big squirt of ketchup

Mix it all together and put in loaf pan. Bake at 350 for 45 minutes. One pan will last us three days or so, but hopefully since Jude is a lot bigger, he'll eat much more! Good luck!

I am so sorry for Jude. He sounds very gracious and it breaks my heart. I hope he enjoyed his car ride and had something to eat! Hang in there.

Sorry about Jude. He's probably just feeling a little icky today. Don't push too much - see how it goes later today. Maybe he will feel better tomorrow. A car ride is a good idea - it will change both your minds. :goodvibes

Be careful with giving Jude stuff with too much grease, like a McD's burger.

When Ted was in his decline, I gave him baby food. I tried all different kinds of the better canned dog foods too...one brand he liked was called Merrick or Merrill. I also used gravy to create some interest...people gravy, not that disgusting dog gravy you can buy in pet stores. But I do recall some days worrying myself sick because he wouldn't eat.

Perhaps the medicine is giving food a funny taste? Perhaps he is losing his tastebuds?

Thank you. I will try that. I made some meals out of boiled hamburger and chicken with some sweet potato. He hated it. He might like meatloaf, especially with garlic powder. We just got back from McDonalds. He LOVED, LOVED, the McDouble plain. He came in and took a couple of bites of the food I left out for him so maybe it stimulated his appetite. He had a nice car ride.

Could be. I have the prescription dog food that he has always loved. Doesn't look like dog food (EN by Purina) There is a drug whose name eludes me right now, that stimulates appetite. His previous owner said that she would prescribe it if his appetite doesn't pick up. My neighbors just stopped by while we were outside. They can't believe it. He LOOKS that good! Smiling, wagging his tail, trotting.

Dawn, I just saw this thread. I am so glad you got some food into Jude. I do understand this--it is so hard, devastating.

Tipper's problems with Peroxicam started with loss of interest in food. If this continues, or if you see any vomiting, PLEASE get blood work done. This was the sign that my dog's kidney failure was starting. Make sure Jude is drinking well. My dogs were on the Purina EN (dry and wet) and it was prescribed for liver and digestive issues. I strongly suggest getting some of the Merrick canned food. It looks so much like human food and smells wonderful. Grammy's Pot Pie was a favorite of my dog with liver cancer. Link to Merrick foods: http://www.merrickpetcare.com/store/canned_dog_food.php

I tried this trick with Mac (the one with liver cancer). Put equal parts peanut butter and water in a bowl. Heat in microwave and stir together--it will make a syrup-like mixture. Put the dry food in a food processor and grind to a powder. Mix the food powder and peanut butter mix together and shape into bite-size pieces. You will need to adjust the ratio so the food will form the small balls/patties. It looks like a no-bake cookie. Mac ate these. The peanut butter has protein and lots of calories. Just don't give too much peanut butter if he is sensitive to oils/fats.

Know Jude is in my thoughts. This is a very difficult road. We did need to syringe-feed our dog with TCC. I will not recommend this, but know it is an option. Also consider Nutri-Stat or Nutri-Cal for extra nourishment.

Tipper's kidneys went bad after only 2 weeks on the medication. Please get the blood work to check BUN and Creatinine if the inappetite continues. Sending my best and please keep us updated--lots of us care about this special fluffy big boy. :grouphug:

Glad Jude was able to eat a little.

After my dog had knee surgery, she refused to eat anything except split pea soup. I spoon fed it to her right out of the can. After a few days, I was able to mix in a little of her dry food with it.
