Refusing a temp job while on unemployment?

Unemployment insurance fraud.

You said you told her no on the job, now you're saying truthfully about not turning it down. Do you really think she was going to hold the job open for you after you turned it down? She has her job to do, filling the position.

I'm an employer, you give unemployed people a bad name.

I agree. And, RainbowBryte, before you say it - I HAVE read the whole thread. And, I've read the excuses you've put up about why this shouldn't count as refusing the job. I just don't happen to agree with you.

It was not up to the person offering you the job, to know the implications to YOUR unemployment payments. That is something you should have known.

Sheesh...thanks so much for the kind words. Someone needs to get off their high horse! It's really easy to be critical of someone when you aren't in their position. I wonder if you'd take that job. Probably not.

Not that it's any of your business, but I sent the agency an email earlier saying that if the job is still available, I'd take it. If not, I will decide what to do from there. As of 3:00 this afternoon, the position was not filled, so there is absolutely a chance I could still get it. I am not a bad person and I just want to do the right thing. I don't have anything further to say and don't feel like being beaten down even more, so I won't be back.

I should have known that if I posted this, I'd get the lectures and thinly veiled insults from holier than thou people. Thanks to those of you who were constructive and helpful.

No it isn't fraud. I called her back the second time ten minutes later and said that I would consider the job but was concerned about what would happen with unemployment, and that's when she told me to look into it because she didn't know.

And gee thanks for the dig. Like you know anything about the kind of person I am. Be glad you have a job and consider having a little compassion for people in difficult situations. I didn't ask to be laid off, and would love nothing more to have a good job again.

But you had the opportunity to have a job and you decided that the pay was not enough incentive to get off of unemployment. I understand that when you factor in the costs of actually working you may not "make" as much as staying home but sheesh! can you not understand the frustration some feel when we all contribute to the fund? I know that when that check is deposited into your account it seems that it is coming from "THE STATE" but that really means your neighbors.

I am not trying to be rude, I am simply trying to understand how one turns down employment. You may not be able to generate the amount you were previously making, many have had to accept lower paying jobs.

I did not see insults. I saw posts from people who do not agree with your position. I a,m one of those people. I won't insult you, I read the entire thread, and I can tell you I would have taken that job.

Wow...unreal! Yep, there should definitely be rules about it. Everyone deserves a choice in where they work. You shouldn't lose that right because you're on unemployment. I was laid off back in 2007 and never even applied for unemployment because I didn't want to deal with the hassle - I used my savings until I found a new job. I wish I had been able to do the same this time, so I could have the freedom of selecting a job that was reasonable for my needs, God forbid.:sad2:

You lost my sympathy with that statement. Sure you have a choice on where you work, IF you are not collecting money from others, ie the state. Taxpayers, your neighbors, your friends, posters here etc all pay into that fund, so I would be ticked off if you think you can wait around while we pay for your choice of job.
