Can owners of older DVC units please comment on the upkeep of the rooms? Is there ever a refurbishment done on the rooms? If so, is it in the contract as to when they get refurbished? If not are you still happy with the quality of the rooms?

Disney management determines the refurb schedule. Some rooms are pretty worn by the time they get done others not so much, it all depends on the guests who stayed there.

We've been members since 1995 and have always found the maintenance and refurbishments of the units to be very good. DVC management maintains a high standard for their units so that they can keep their reputation up. Without that, they would not be able to continue their construction and sale of new DVC units.

Refurbishments are on going all the time. If you see things wrong or not working, you need to let the management know so they can have maintenence look into if they can repair or if they need to replace. If a room needs total replacement, I'm sure they will refurbish if need be. They need to keep rooms cleaned up and rented. IMHO

I have read from unofficial sources that DVC resorts usually have a soft goods refurbishment -- sheets, bedcovers, curtains, etc. -- about every 7 years and a hard goods refurbishment -- furniture, TV, beds -- about every 12 years. Part of our yearly maintenance fees are used for capital reserves, which includes interior refurbishment and common element renovations.

As Disneynutz posted, its up to DVCMC to decide when renovations are done.

If memory serves me correctly, I think SSR will have a soft goods renovation within the next year or so.

If they bought good quality furniture, it will last longer (like at OKW), But if they buy junk (like at BLT), it will require repairs and changing more frequently.

For the OKW renovation, they wound up painting the existing furniture (some of it is rather ugly now - ala the alligator finish coffee table).

I'd take those dates with a grain of salt.

BWV saw a complete refurb in 2009-10. That's about 13 years from the time it opened.

For OKW the first major refurb was 2010-11...nearly 20 years after opening.

Doesn't seem to be any rigid schedule in place.

From what I saw SSR needs a total overhaul :-/
