I am interested in purchasing the Panasonic TZ4. A power seller on eBay with good feedback is selling refurbished ones for under $180.

Description says
"This product is PANASONIC REFURBISHED IN FULLY WORKING & LIKE NEW CONDITION. IN REFURBISHED BOX. Warranty Length: This product comes with 3 MONTHS warranty."

Do you think I should chance it or pay more money for brand new?

Thanks so much for your thoughts on this.

I would check to see if it qualifies for a square trade warranty...

I've bought refurbished cameras in the UK from Fuji (direct) and from the "Canon Outlet" on eBay.

In both cases, the cameras were in as-new condition, and I have had no reliability problems.

Never tried Panasonic, though.

This is what I did, too. Bought my latest camera - a Kodak Z712 IS - off eBay from a reputable seller, as "refurbished." It was eligible for Square Trade, and I bought the additional 1-yr. warranty from them. It didn't cost too much and I liked having the peace of mind that I was covered for quite a while.

.

I bought one off of ebay thru Cameta Camera and it worked great. had no problems and they have a great seller feedback as I recall. You just need to do your homework on ebay

What is "square trade"?

they are a warranty company, i recently bought a recertified desktop computer, I bought a 2 year squaretrade warranty for 60 dollars,I had a 50% off coupon from them as a prior customer..with the warranty if I have pc problems, they will pay for someone to come to my house to fix the pc, if it can't be fixed within I think 7 days, they will refund my full purchase price for the pc

Interesting. Wish there was someone like that here. I don't normally buy extended warranties, but for cameras that are at constant risk of bumps and drops, I think they can be worth while.

When I found that I had omitted to buy one for the SLR, I tried to get one, but they were charging £125 (around US$190) per year!

At that price, I'll just take my chances... What's the betting it dies on me while I'm at WDW this summer?

I would only buy refurbished when saving about 30% or more over new, but that is just me.

And the TZ4 is available brand new for $188(no tax and free shipping), from a very reputable Etailer.
