Refund to gift card without the card.

So we have a trip currently booked at the end of August. While we hope that the parks will be open by then, we are preparing ourselves for the worst. In the event that Disney cancels our trip ideally we will reschedule for a later date. However if we do need to cancel all together or get some money back how do gift cards work. In doing my research online I have read that you are supposed to save the gift cards since the money goes back on the cards you used to pay with. Well of course we didn't expect this pandemic to happen and we didn't save the cards. What are our options? Hopefully we don't have to worry about it but we are preparing ourselves.
 
You will have to call Disney to cancel and inform them you no longer have the gift card/s. They will send you new ones. It will take longer and it's annoying but they're not going to steal your money :)

And obviously save them next time. I put a sticky note on mine of how much I paid for what. Also, make sure to never pay more than $1000 in total from any one gift card as they can only refund up to $1k. If you keep reloading the same gift card and paying the trip off with it you'll find yourself in this same spot of needing Disney to issue you new gift cards.
 
When this happened once to me I was able to just tell them the number of a card I did have and they refunded to that card. That was for a tour. It was really easy and a quick phone call.
For the room they swore they couldn't do that, but they were able to tell me the number over the phone of the new gift card they were refunding to. So I was able to switch it to my gift card right away. Just remember only $1000 can go on each card, so if it is a big refund you need a few available. A supervisor had to get involved, but once she got on the call it was a smooth process.
 

I bought one of those 4 park magic tickets for DS for our May trip. After I canceled I asked to get a refund and I gave them the last 4 numbers from the gift card I used to buy the ticket. It took a good while but a few days ago I got an email and they put the ticket purchase amount on a new gift card number. I just went to the disney gift card website and transferred it to the original card. YMMV
 
I paid for my AP a year ago with a gift card, AP expires 4/29. Not sure if I will extend or take a partial refund. Never dreamed I would need to keep that gift card. I’ve been looking for it, i remember I marked it so I would have it when I activated.
 
We were in the same position.
it appeared to be more complicated than it needed to be!
In short; we have been issued electronic email gift cards..all fully refunded.

I do recall actually booking last year and the cm asking did I want the zero balance gift cards back; I asked did I need them & she replied no!
The reservations clerk on the telephone was not impressed by this or me not keeping ahold of them.. consider me scolded !

I had to cancel my April trip I paid with a few gift cards and of course I lost two of them. Disney was able to see what two I did not have ( out of the 7 I used) and send me new gift cards by email took about 3 weeks to get them.
 
I have mine in a little hard card case with labels on each: one for my resort deposit, one with funds allocated for CLP dining tickets (if that happens) and two for my resort charges (if that happens).

I am in Canada so our cards allow $1000 CDN each with is around $700 US right now (ouch!)
 
I didn't keep mine. When I rescheduled my trip was cheaper, so I needed a refund. They refunded some to my credit card (I had paid a portion with my CC) and reissued me a e gift card. It took way longer than normal due to Covid, it took 5 weeks.

I do the same thing, I keep mine in a little Christmas tin and label the ones I’ve combined with Sharpie. Came in real handy when we had to cancel next week’s trip, especially since we had PIF with gift cards.

We paid for our entire trip with gift cards. No worries. Disney emailed me e-gift cards of $1000 each and then the remaining balance on the last one. Guest relations said they presume people no longer have the original cards and/or have no way of knowing if a person has reloaded them with more funds. The process is to issues new ones. I received our refund within about two days of being notified the trip was canceled.

I asked if I could just have it sent to my credit card and they said no. So...that's a lot of money tied up in Disney gift cards!

I have several thousands tied up in gift cards from our March trip being cancelled. It’s ok with me, we’ll use them on our upcoming trip IF we get to go- if not I’ll use them on a later trip. But it is a good thing for people to know- don’t use gift cards if you don’t want a possible refund back to them!

I agree with you. We have been to Disney 1-2 times per year for many years, and have always used gift cards to pay for the trip. After this, we will never use them again. We aren't comfortable rescheduling at this point. Everyone is getting Disney stuff for birthdays and Christmas.
 
I thought I was being smart by getting in on the BJ's gift card deal earlier in the year. Now I am regretting the purchase. If they don't open this summer, I can always use it another year, but I'd much rather have the cash.
