Has this system changed?

DH does not hear well and enjoys the benefits of reflective captioning at several shows, especially this one. When our kids asked to be seated in this area there were told that reflective captioning is gone. They called us and we did not even bother to go into the show and the kids left and met up with us.

Has anyone else run into this?

The WDW website indicates Fantasmic! offers assistive listening but it doesn't mention the reflective captioning option any more. That's disappointing for folks who used that service. Sorry you had that experience.

I hope the rest of your trip was magical!

I wonder what assistive listening is? I am not familiar with it.

Thanks for the reply and yes much of our trip was great but we had a problem with our villa at OKW. We had an incident with a flying squirrel that really messed things up. I am still cleaning up all of our belongings as everything had to be washed because of lice and fleas. Our suitcases had to be fumigated. It is a real pain in the you know what! Plus we have been exposed to typhus and are now in a waiting period until 12/27. Some day we hope this will be funny but right now it is not.

Yeah... I'm pretty sure the incubation period for "finding the humor in typhus" is a minimum of 6 months.

I hope this turns out to be an inconvenience and nothing more.

That sounds like a rough trip! Fumigation, wild animal, and a typhus scare oh my.

That is interesting with the device. It was still there in november where the section had the screens so people could see the moniters behind them.

Assistive Listening utilizes a handheld device obtained from Guest Relations, and the user wears headphones. If I recall, if the user wears hearing aids there is a way to get it to transmit to the hearing aids instead of using the headphones. We tried assistive listening device for my daughter once but did not have very good luck with it. Her needs have changed so we haven't tried it again.

Oh my...the rest of your trip sounds like you had quite a challenge. I do so hope that a few months from now you can laugh at it. Best of luck with all of it!

I have a hearing impaired child that used the closed caption. It is horrible that it was taken away. I called wdw and really complained on behalf of my child and the countless others who do not complain about this. The close caption was the best option for this show. The option now is a handheld device which is not a convenient option for the eyes to transition and watch the show. I urge you to call and make a complain if you can. To add insult to injury the space reserved for closed caption is now sold as dining package. My daughter actually cried out of frustration.

I am so sorry to hear this. Your poor daughter! We had sent our older kids ahead and we were following up a few minutes behind them. When they called to tell us that they hd been told that the reflective captioning was gone, we did not even go to the show and they left then to join us. It worked so well and was really a simple concept. It certainly could not have cost as much as hand held devices! Since we are still in the middle of our flying squirrel complaint, I think I will add this to our list of problems.

Besides being hearing impaired my child has also had multiple eye surgeries. The eyes shift was easier with the reflective captioning. She tried the handheld device. The eye shift from the device to the show did not work for her. I complained at guest relations and wrote a very detailed e mail. I spoke to a representative on the phone who was not helpful at all. She said to me that nobody was complaining. I tried to explain that most people don't even know where to complain. My daughter is 9 years old and she feels hurt and let down by disney. Up to now she refuses to go back to the show. She says for her it is like watching a favorite show with the tv on mute.

Someone tried to give me a book to follow the show and a flashlight. They don't even understand my daughter does not know when to change the page since she can't hear the show. That means I have to give her all her cues which means neither one of us can watch the show. It is sad....
