The only thing that is concrete in the rule is that the mugs don't expire BEFORE the end of the length of your stay.
That's the problem with these debates. People who don't accept the written word. The sign tells you under what conditions you are allowed to use a refillable mug to obtain beverages. The sign doesn't say you can't use a bread bag or 7-11 mug either but that doesn't mean it's permitted. Suppose I bring a thermos and fill it with coffee? The sign doesn't say I can't. You can pay for a beverage and get a cup. The sign tells you the exception to that rule.
Does anyone have a picture of a sign or an old resort brochure that specifically said the mugs were good for life? I'm curious if free refills for life is anything more than CM generating unofficial policy.
FACE IT Official Disney policy is, and has been for years, the mug is good for your current stay in that resort.
FACE IT Unofficial Disney policy at almost all resorts (POLY, BW excepted) is FREE DRINKS FOR ALL.
I have no problems accepting the current unoffical policy. I am puzzled why some people have trouble understanding the offical policy when the signage is so clear.
Unofficial policy will change if and when Disney is willing to get rid of self service beverages, add a bar code reader or station CM to act as "mug police".
Some intelligent points in these debates:
Consider buying soda or bottled water. You can buy a lot for the cost of the mug, they are easier to take to the pools and park and it may save someone a long walk to bring back some soda to the room.
Some of us would rather have better coffee even if it meant more restricted refills.
Bring your old mugs. Worse case you have to buy new mugs.
