I was reading on another website that the Butterbeer souvenir mugs can be refilled with soft drinks for a low price just like the UO refillable mugs. Do any of the Butterbeer souvenir mugs have lids and is there any benefit/disadvantage to getting a Butterbeer mug instead of a UO mug for refills throughout the trip?

The butterbeer mug is nota good choice,is smaller than many of the others souvenir cups at Universal all cups participate in this offer, take your time a choose wisely

Butterbeer mugs do NOT have lids. I would NOT buy one for the purpose of getting refills.

Are there a lot of different mugs to chose from? I would love any suggestions and where they can be purchased. We have decided on a regular mug that can be refilled for the entire trip instead of the freestyle mug that we would have to pay extra for daily, but that's about all I know!!

With All mugs you have to pay $1 each time you refill, (water refill is free) unlike Disney where you pay one price for the length of your trip, There is a Minions mugs, Transformers, Men in Black, butterbeer, but the plain freestyle is the best in size and shape to carry around, obviously kids will love the Bumblebee cup or Minions, I'm sure there are more cups to chose from, the freestyle is sold at restaurants and the characters ones at merchandise store at the end of the rides, also sidewalk vendors sell them, I bought a freestyle cup 4 years ago and I still bring it with me on each trip and Universal refills it for $1, we mostly use it for the free water they are durable, they even change the straw for free! :woohoo:

I have a minions mug from US Hollywood last year. Can I bring that to get $1 refills?

Can you get a refill on Butterbeer?
Not for $1, I was thinking about clarification on that, no drinks inside the Harry potter lands are $1 refill, actually there are no sodas sold anywhere on HP, there is a cheaper butterbeer around $10 that is serve in a disposable plastic cup

What butterbeer is $10?

They will still refill your character mugs for $1.19. They aren't selling the red refillable sippy cups anymore. I'm not sure if they are still refilling old Coke Freestyle cups.

Around $10 I might be off fo a couple of dollars, they do ask if you want the souvenir mug or not

I think these are the latest prices ....
Frozen butterbeer is $6.49
Cold butterbeer is $5.49
Hot butterbeer is $5.49

It is much more expensive with the souvenir mug.

The Freestyle mug is the mug that can be refilled for the entire trip.

Are there two different mugs? Maybe I was reading all old info! I thought there was a mug for the Coke Freestyle machines that only works for that day with a chip and you refill yourself and then a standard mug that you buy anywhere with fountain drinks and you pay less for the mug but pay for every refill. Am I really confused???

Slightly off topic but....
Yes I found this a bit amusing - the bartender said at least 20 times in the two hours I was there that there is "No soda in the wizarding world".
I think it is one of the "rules"...but they do have Soda water at the bar..so you can get drinks made with that.
No problem selling beer and other alcohols though

As for the mugs - they are not refillable with butterbeer...but with soda anywhere in the parks for 1.27.

Also if your mug it beat up they will swap it for a new one- the bartender at three broomsticks did this for a few people who were just gettign water - I though that was kind of cool
She also stated you could bring it back whenever you want and get refills - or swap it out - once couple had one that was about a year old and she gave them a new one

The non-chip mugs are not sold anymore.
