Refill Mugs - Are 2008 still good??

We ALWAYS buy 2 refillable mugs each and every time we stay at WDW.

However, with that being said - I absolutely, positively remember with 100% certainty, that back in 1997 when we bought our first mugs at Wilderness Lodge, they told us they were "good for life". It was one of the reasons we bought them.

I understand that the NEW mug policy is that they are only good for your current stay. But as far as the OLD mugs are concerned, my opinion is that they were purchased under a different policy: I compare it to a warranty.....if I bought item "A" 10 years ago with a lifetime warranty - then I have a lifetime warranty for item "A". If I buy that same item today (item "B") and it only comes with a 5 year warranty - that does not mean my warranty for item "A" is now only 5 years.

CMs always say bring them back, they are good forever. You have to read the signs posted near the mugs or on the mugs themselves. CMs don't want to upset the guests. Disney policy is that they have always been good for the trip during which they were purchased.

Whatever...this is stupid.

This is what is problem with society. They justify everything to serve their own purposes. The mugs speak for themselves at present with the disclaimer at the bottom of each cup. If what a CM told you in 1997, 12 years ago makes you feel better, then by all means.

I have 6 of the exact same mugs in my cabinet. 3 bought in 2007, another 3 in 2008. My moral compass works just fine. I need to worry more about the fact if dh will have his job at this time next week.

So use your old mugs, pool hop, line jump..some of you feel it's your right.

yeah but technically isn't a rule a rule....

if there is a rule you don't bring food in, but disney over looks it then its no big deal

if there is a rule to use the cup during original visit and you use it more and disney overlooks it then again, no big deal.

And personally I think they are losing less on the cost of soda than than what they loose by people bringing in snacks/food/drinks

I guess I just don't understand why breaking one rule is "better" than breaking another....

While the mug issue has been talked to death many times, I find your post too funny. Disney ALLOWS food to be taken into the parks. There isn't a rule against it that they're overlooking, the rule is you CAN bring your own food into the park. Why else would they have a rule about how big your cooler can be??? There are a few places - shows, etc - where they ask you not to be actively eating and drinking while you're in the building, but that applies to the food you buy in the parks too.

To all those who consider it stealing and have no problem saying so on the net-do you say anything when you see people refilling old mugs or non-Disney mugs? What has been the reaction of the person refilling the mug when you confronted them?

I would never say anything to anyone. I don't feel it's my place to do so.

A lot of people justify reusing mugs because the soda costs Disney so very little. I wonder if it's because it's a liquid. So here's the question that I'm dying for people to answer ....

Let's pretend that the resort food courts started selling penny candy. Quite literally, small individual pieces of candy for which they charge one cent each. Let's say this candy costs Disney very little, like one one-hundredth of a cent each piece. And let's say that you know of other people who've taken candy without paying, and you've never heard of an instance of a CM telling people that they can't ust take it, that they have to pay for it. The question is, would you feel perfectly justified in taking a piece of candy or two? Would you tell your kids it's OK to take a piece of that candy without paying for it?

If Disney intended on selling unlimited drinks forever, the price would be a lot more than $12 per mug. It is clearly posted that the refills are only included for the length of the stay in which the mug was purchased. What's the problem? I think $12 per trip for unlimited drinks is a great deal... and you get a travel mug to take home.

As far as showing up with an old mug and filling it anyway... wouldn't you be embarassed? Maybe some people have no shame, but I know I could never do that. I guess I take too much pride in how I'm perceived.

You can do whatever you want. The only ones that have a right to say something are the employees, it is their job.

Personally, I think refilling old mugs is pretty ghetto. But that's just my opinion.

Actually, I have to disagree. How is it NOT the right of anyone who see's another person breaking the rules to point it out to whomever they want? If the people don't want to be called out, perhaps they shouldn't be breaking the rules!

What a fantastic question and analogy. And I'll happily answer it: No, I would NEVER tell my children or anyone else it was OK to take a piece of the candy without paying for it. This is what legal circles refer to as the "slippery slope." Because if you allow the child (or yourself) to take the candy, what's to stop them from taking two-cent candy. Or five cent. It's a matter of degrees. Parents who use the refillable mugs trip after trip are setting a horrendous example. Then again, I suspect this is probably the LEAST horrible of the examples they set during the course of their typical vacation!

This raises an interesting question...

what percentage of people are repeat visitors. I was floored by the number of people last week who were adults with first trip buttons on and we are very much in the minority in terms of people who visit as often as we do in my neighborhood. It would be interesting to see how many people actually buy mugs and use on multiple trips. Maybe the number is so small that it isn't worth it for Disney to risk upsetting their repeat customers.

Thank goodness they don't have a rule about me filling up my plastic containers and bags when we eat at the buffets. One paid meal and I can eat for three or four days.

Actually ~ you can only use the Fast Past at the start time not before, however, they let you use it after the end time, which I didn't know until my DW told me just a few minutes ago. So I guess I'm telling you you're half right. But I can't side with you on the mug issue. What is right is right. It's like going to a movie theatre. They have this deal if you buy a large popcorn and two drinks the popcorn is refillable as much as you want. However, you can't bring the popcorn box back the next time you go to the movie and think they are going to fill it up. I guess if you could sneak it in you could do it. So I guess you would say with the mug is, you know it's the policy that it is only good for the one stay, but if you SNEAK it back in, that's okay. What would Jiminy Cricket say? Let your conscience be your guide.

Personally I think if Disney really cared that much about this issue they would do something to prevent it. (Have a stamp or something stating it is good until such and such date) I think some people are making this too big of an issue. I probably wouldn't do it, but I don't go every year. My question is hwo do you KNOW is if someone is using a YOAMD mug from a previous trip (pretend the new mugs haven't come out yet) if the YOAMD mugs are still on the shelves? There are no dates on them. Like I said if Disney really was bothered or losing tons of money from this they could prevent it. I personally have much bigger things to complain about than people doing this. I really think people just need to find a reason to complain.

Really though, I am someone who thinks that if you can afford to go to Disney, you can afford to follow their rules and buy new mugs, even if it is easy to cheat the system and use old ones. The bad thing about the honor system is that so many people seem to lack it nowadays.

Oh, and our local movie theater actually does have a refillable popcorn bucket. It costs $50, but you get $25 in refreshment coupons too.
