Redbox Price Increase

I just got the e-mail. While I'm not thrilled about it (seems like everything is going up these days) - I'm not upset or mad. We only use Redbox from time to time.

I got the email, too and thought the 20 cent increase awkward. Why not 50 cents? We'll keep renting regardless. I bet Netflix is breathing a little easier that they are not the only ones with bad news.

Redbox's Website explaining price increase to $1.20 a day.
Just rented a DVD today and it was still $1/day. I'm guessing that this will go into effect next month?

Redbox used to offer a free rental code via text on the first Monday of every month. Now it's "every once in a while". And you used to be able to request a discount code via text when you were standing at the kiosk.

It looks like you will still be able to reserve a movie online for just $1 for the first night until the end of November.

20 cents isn't a make it or break it price for me. I don't rent movies often enough for it to have a great impact. I see it as their way to take advantage of the flood of Netflix users who abandoned their DVD subscriptions in favor of the cheaper Redbox rentals. A 20% price increase is pretty hefty!

The price increase isn't that bad. We'll continue to rent from them. It's still way cheaper than renting from iTunes or On Demand.

20 cents isn't bad but it's just one more reason for me to go to Blockbuster express. They seem to have a better selection of movies plus there are always free codes.

Blockbuster Express already charges more for the 'newer' movies..or what they call the 'hot' movies..

I am glad they didn't choose to go to $1.25 or $1.50, the $1.20 makes it seem (rightly or not) that they are not trying to just pad the bottomline but to actually cover increased expenses.

Just like things cost us the consumer more, things also cost business more. A case of paper that we use at work I used to be able to get for $35 is now nearly $50.

I don't think 20 cents is bad. If you haven't noticed everything has gone up, this amount is a resonable amount due to the rest of the economy. Now what Netflix did was totally different & can't be compared fairly. We cancelled them, but will continure to use Redbox or Blockbuster Express when we want to watch a movie. (which isn't very often anymore)

Yeah we've already had the increase here in Austin for a while now. 20 cents isn't too bad, at least it wasn't like the Netflix hike. Still it seems like everything is going up except for my paycheck.

I also think it is only $1.20 for the first night. It is still $1 for each additional night. Still a good value.

They send so many free codes via text message I won't complain about this. The free codes more than balance it out and like someone else said, at least it isn't like the Netflix debacle.

While $0.20 isn't a huge amount it does make Amazon's instant video rentals seem like more of a value, at least to me.

Amazon charges $3.99 per rental but you can get the movie the day it is released (rather than having to wait with redbox), you can watch it as many times as you want in a 48 hour period (rather than 24 hours with iTunes), plus you don't have to worry about returning it (which I always forget to do :headache:).

I use Blockbuster Express instead. I'm constantly getting free movie codes so haven't paid for a movie all year! Now I do have to wait a week or so to watch the Tuesday releases (Hot movies) but that's ok with me. I used to be years behind on movies and now I'm only a week behind!

Redbox hasn't given me any free codes so I don't use them as long as I get free from Blockbuster.

But paying $1 or $1.20 is still a better deal than going to the theater.

20 cents isn't a lot, but it's also a 20% price increase. When described that way, it's a lot. (Still a bargain though.)

We just recently started renting Red Box movies. As most of you know, Red Box blocks out the extra features on the DVD. So you can see the movie, but not the extra stuff.

Keeping this in mind I think it would be hard for Red Box to justify increasing the cost of a standard movie much above $1.20. They already charge $1.50 for Blu Ray.

So it would get to a point where Blu Ray DVD's would have to be increased to justify another .15 or .20 cent raise in standard DVD.

My DH thought Red Box choose a bad time to implement the price increase....they came out right on the heels of Netflix. Which doesn't make Red Box look to good!
