We noticed on Sunday that our DD, who is 2.5, has all these red spots on the palm of one of her hands. The other hand just has a couple of them. They are blisters or raised - they are just red spots. I am waiting for her pediatrician to get back from lunch so I can ask them. But in the meantime - does anyone know what this could be? They seem to itch a little, but dont bother her too much.

Again, I am just asking if anyone here has any clue as to what it might be. I hate waiting for doctors to call me back!! And of course, I FREAK out about everything!

TIA!

Have you been anywhere in the last month or so where she slept in another bed? Do they itch more at night?

We visit my parents house a couple times a month, but I doubt she could have gotten anything there.

Hand, foot & mouth disease?

My toddler got it last year in daycare.

This is what I am thinking, too. But she is not in daycare, so I have no clue how she could have gotten it! Can you tell me what they normally do to treat this? I am sure her pedi will want to see her to make sure - because I am just guessing that is what it could be by looking at websites.

Check out her room, her bed and her play area for something she might be handling, what about her soap, different towels, lotion in your tissues... anything that could end up on her hands. It sounds like an allergy to me, or what the Peds like to call contact dermatitis.

When my DD was little she would get little red spots in whatever spot of her skin touched the carpet for any length of time. I first noticed on her face but then realized it would happen to her legs when she sat a long time in shorts. It was very odd, never got worse and she eventually grew out of it. It was an allergy of some kind. i dealt with it at the time by putting her in leggings every day and keeping pillows available so she didn't rest her skin directly on the floor.

My DS had sensitive skin too and would get red spots whenever I used non-chlorine bleach so I stopped using it and switched to Oxyclean.

Don't get me wrong, I panicked over this stuff for a while until I could figure it out... there was nothing easy about finding the offending thing. Good luck

.... I just read what the others had to say. I've never seen foot & mouth disease, are there other symptoms?

DD didn't have the spots in her mouth and I can't remember if there was a low grade fever or not.
It was one of those things that just had to ride itself out. She got a lot of stuff from daycare and I don't remember this one being a big deal.

Thanks for your post. My DH is convinced it is rug burn, but I dont think so. It does look like an allergic reaction, but then I looked at pictures of Hand Foot and Mouth Disease and it looked like it could be that too. And of course, searching the internet always freaks me out more!

DD doesnt have spots in her mouth either. Just the red spots on her hands. I dont think it is a big deal if they get it, I just want to know if there is anything we can do to make it go away faster!

Did she touch a plant? I'd apply any Aveeno cream or lotion on the hands.

Does it itch more at night? Does she wake up scratching?

I know this is going to sound gross but DSD came home with this from her DM's house at the end of one summer. Her mother (took off the D part) got a mattress from an empty apartment for her to sleep on. She didn't clean it at all. Apparently from the dust mites she developed scabies. :scared1: She had really itchy hands. Took her to the dermatologist (under treatment anyway) who diagnosed it immediately. There is about a month long incubation period. Used a cream for 3 days in a row and they went away. Unfortunately she loved to change her little sister (who doesn't like to play dress up with the little ones). So before we knew it, the little one developed scabies under her armpits as that was where DSD would pick her up.
I never looked up pictures on the web but it was definitely raised bumps that would itch like crazy.

I hope your DD is feeling better soon.

If it turns out to be hand, foot, mouth, then if your dd can swish or gargle, mix about 1 tsp of benedrly, 1 tsp of motrin, and 1 tsp of malox. Don't swallow, just swish around the mouth. This helps comfort and ease the mouth blisters. My dd6 and ds2 had hfmd a couple of months ago, and it was terrible. This concoction was what their ped recommended. For my son, since he wouldn't be able to swish around without swallowing, I just wiped the stuff in his mouth and on this gums to give him some relief. Otherwise, there is not much else to do for it except run its course!

My kids had small spots on their hands and feet for a few days, a few turned into blisters after a while, but the worst was in their mouths, which showed up, like I said, a few days after the red spots on their hands and feet.

No, not that I can think of. We dont have any plants at home, because I am obviously plant murderer- or at least my husband thinks so.

She doesnt wake up scratching and these are really raised at all. They are just red splotches. I wish I had a pic to show you guys. That will have to wait until I get home from work tonight. They itch, but arent raised at all. It almost looks like it is under the skin.

Thanks for the heads up. I doubt she can swish anything without swallowing, but there arent blisters in her mouth yet - but she has complained that her mouth hurts. But I just thought that was because she is getting her 2 year molars right now and they just broke through.

Likely HFM. My kids got it when we went to Disney's Vero Beach resort when they were 2.5yo and 3 months. And then I got it. The red spots weren't really itchy, but they were sort of sore to the touch. My son only had them on his feet, my daughter on her feet and mouth, and I had them in all 3 spots. The way I figured it out was that I was squeezing my daughter's cheeks (ya know, like old people do) and she burst into tears that her mouth hurt.

The "magic mouthwash" another poster mentioned apparently does wonders, but no way my daughter would do it at that age. We tried, but no luck. They went away on their own eventually, nothing else you could do in the meantime.

The worst, for me, were the ones on my feet as we went to WDW after Vero and walking all day on those little bumps killed me!

I dont know why I didnt think of this before, but we went to a birthday party at Chuck E. Cheese on Saturday and they started showing up right after that.

Ah, and there you have it! My daughter got pinkeye after a birthday party at CEC over a year ago and will not set foot back in there since as a result. Works very nicely for me as I definitely have no desire to go there!

ETA: In our case, I think it was from all the barefoot walking my daughter did around the resort, and from there it spread around. Somehow my husband escaped it...

When my kids were little they would get red blotches on from those styrofoam floaties that people used at the pools. I wonder if it was the styrofoam hand-railings at the play area that is the culprit?

We call Chuck E Cheese-- Chuck E Disease b/c I swear everytime we go, one of the kids gets sick. Strep throat, chicken pox, throwing up virus-- you name it- it's there.

Hope your baby gets well soon. HFM is not fun at all. Poor little thing.

Jo

My son has had the symptoms you describe, and that was Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease like the other posters have mentioned. He had it twice.

It is very contagious, but fairly benign. It went away in a day or two, and we didn't do anything special to treat it (just kept him home).

A nurse is supposed to call me back any minute now, so I hope I can get some answers soon! I will let you guys know!
