I'm not a huge fan of the Wild Card as I think it creates too many playoff games. It' almost like basketball! I just finished listening to Bob Costa's "Fair Game" on my way down to last night's Cubs game. I had a 4 1/2 hour drive down and a 3 hour drive back and I'm running on 4 1/2 hours sleep and too much coffee . Costas recommends that Baseball scrap the WC and give the best division winning team a bye until the League Championship. He thinks that having second place teams in post-season play and makes the divisional races less
exciting and devalues the pennant and the WS. I agree with him.

That being said ... since we still have the Wild Card and the National League Wild Card is the Cubs to lose ... I'll be happy at the end of the week when the Cubs clinch another chance at the World Series. I already have the tickets. Hope to see you there .

Fair Game was a great book!


I know not all the playoff teams are set yet, but I know starting October 3rd that I have 7 teams that I root for!

I also read Fair Game and agree that it's a terrific book. Costas' point was never better illustrated than with the Yanks/Red Sox series this weekend. Although the series still had some juice just because it was Yanks/Red Sox, imagine if only one playoff spot was up for grabs! Although the two teams are still fighting for the division title, it really just brings home field advantage to one of the teams; it doesn't eliminate one team as it would have years ago.

By the way, if you like books about baseball, and have never read it, I HIGHLY recommend Summer of '98 by Mike Lupica. It was published 5 years ago so perhaps some have read it but if you haven't you'll be delighted. It is my favorite non-fiction book. Well worth your time.

hmmm..., seems to me DiamondBacks, Marlins and Angels have something to show also....it is not always a given that the World Series automatically goes to NY...

and as far as Costas goes, I wouldn't agree with anything he has to say....he was awful commentating on the Olympics...of which many on the Dis were in agreement...I put him low on my list of memorable sports reporters.

and as far as Costas goes, I wouldn't agree with anything he has to say....he was awful commentating on the Olympics...of which many on the Dis were in agreement...I put him low on my list of memorable sports reporters.

While I might agree his commentating is not the greatest, Bob Costas has a great love for the game of baseball. Not to mention he has incredible knowledge about the game. That is why his book is good to read, because it is evident that this man knows his stuff! He should consider running for commish of baseball!

His commentating does bother me at times though. Every play is his "Play of the series"!

You should give Fair Game a try. It might very well change your opinion. Just because someone isn't the best Olympic commentator doesn't mean he can't write a good book on something which is near and dear to him.

the book may be good or interesting...not disputing that...I just do not care for Costas in any way, shape or form, so I don't think I could read the book or pad his pocket in any way....but its nice you feel you got your money's worth reading it

he can have tons of knowledge and a love of the game, but his .02 cents is just that to me....I do not care for him at all...pompous is all that comes to mind....I enjoy someone that has a vast knowledge of the sport, but when he speaks, it just has such arrogance to it, I cannot stand him.....JMHO of course

The difference between the Red Sox and the Yankees is that when th Yankees clinched their playoff spot, they went about their business as usual. When the Red Sox did it, they celebrated like they just won the World Series. Maybe that's because that's as close as they'll get

Like I heard recently, "The Yankees are the best team money can buy. They will outspend any team, outbid for any player."


It's no wonder we cheer on the underdog. It means so much more to us.

A Red Sox..Chicago Cubs World Series would be rather interesting...but to pick the winner then God would have to finally decide which team he hated more.( Boston probably)..... and I doubt that God could ever permit himself to get into that position..so we wont see such a series unless its on the eve of the end of the world/.

I see Red Sox fans are still perpetuating that myth. I guess they got Schilling and Faulk on the cheap. How many home grown players do the Sox have? As compared to the Yankees who have Jeter, Williams, Posada and Rivera. Give it a rest. You'll have to look for a new excuse for losing.
