Like most of you, I didn't get the 20% discount on gift cards this week, so now I'm thinking about getting a Red Card for the 5% discount. I live in Canada and was once declined for a Kohls card (despite having a sterling credit report) because I don't have a SSN and they couldn't find any credit history for me (because I don't have any in the US).
Kohls still gave me the 30% off that trip, however, for applying in-store. If I go to Target and apply for a Red Card, will they give me the 5% even if I am not approved for the card? I know I can get an RBC Red Card (for Canadian Target stores) that will give me the 5% discount in the US, but they charge a 2.5% foreign exchange conversion fee and I have a card that charges zero foreign exchange fees and would rather use that.
So my hope is to go to Target, apply for the Red Card, get turned down for not having a SSN, and then use my existing MasterCard to pay for the purchase but still get 5% off. Would that work?
