Red Card application question

Like most of you, I didn't get the 20% discount on gift cards this week, so now I'm thinking about getting a Red Card for the 5% discount. I live in Canada and was once declined for a Kohls card (despite having a sterling credit report) because I don't have a SSN and they couldn't find any credit history for me (because I don't have any in the US).

Kohls still gave me the 30% off that trip, however, for applying in-store. If I go to Target and apply for a Red Card, will they give me the 5% even if I am not approved for the card? I know I can get an RBC Red Card (for Canadian Target stores) that will give me the 5% discount in the US, but they charge a 2.5% foreign exchange conversion fee and I have a card that charges zero foreign exchange fees and would rather use that.

So my hope is to go to Target, apply for the Red Card, get turned down for not having a SSN, and then use my existing MasterCard to pay for the purchase but still get 5% off. Would that work?

I'd have to think most likely not. The 5% comes off after you swipe your card so without a card I doubt you would get it.

Of course, you could always try driving around town until you find a manager that will give you a discount. ;)

:rotfl2: This is the first time I have ever used an emoticon on this site, but this comment required it!!

For the original poster, it sounds like the Kohl's discount offer was given to anyone who "applied" for a charge card, not just those who were "approved." Some stores only give a discount if you are "approved" for a new charge card. Check Target's website to see if they clarify which discount they give applicants.

You want them to give you a discount that is given to people with a card-but you want the discount after being denied the card?:confused3

Lots of places will give you a discount if you apply for their card, even if you are denied.

I have not heard of that. One of the benefits of having the card is the discount.

What it sounds like in this case-the OP has a way to get the card and get the discount, but doesn't want to.

I once heard of instances where Canadians who lived near U.S. border towns had the ability to get the U.S. credit card version of the REDcard. I'm guessing there were special procedures in place for Canadian visitors, who obviously didn't have a U.S. SSN. Now that a debit card version exists (which ties into what I presume is a U.S.-only bank account), and the fact that Target is now in Canada offering their own REDcard though RBC. You can always ask a U.S. Store Team Leader (manager) near the border what the procedures are for Canadians.

As for your "hope", I very seriously doubt that would be the case, as the 5% discount is tied into the actual card "swipe", itself, meaning the cashiers do not "punch it in"...

Yep, that's exactly what I want and don't feel any conflict about it at all. The Dis Morality Police are out in full force these days!

OP, you don't have to get the credit card you can get the debit card that is tied to your bank account. I'm not sure if it only works for US banks though.

Well, at least it's nice to see that the USA hasn't cornered the market on moral bankruptcy.

I'm not arguing this at all but when I applied for the debit card, they ran a voided check through the scanner and it printed out a temporary receipt that I actually used three times before I received my card in the mail. Do they not do this anymore?

I'm pretty sure it won't work. You can always get the Red debit, same 5% discount.

And now the Dis Morality Police even have problems with people like you who want to 100% comply with the terms of a store's offer.

You can also get a 5% coupon for filling 5 prescriptions. Just thought i'd throw that out there.

This board is hysterical sometimes!

Thanks for the suggestions re: debit card but they don't work with Canadian banks due to currencies (ie my bank account uses CDN dollars not USD).

I will try to get to a Target next week, explain the situation and see what they say. Thanks again! :)

I think you should be able to check the wording on the offer to see if its for applying or not...

Is there any way to use the Canadian version to buy the cards online and get the discount? Or do they not ship them over the border?

I am pretty sure you need to get the redcard for the country you live in. I have been told by Canadians that their Targets are not yet as good as US ones. Do they sell Disney cards there?
