Our 17 year old Kenmore washer just broke. Finally I can buy a more efficient machine. Need suggestions quickly. Leaning towards a top loader. We live in FL and worry about mold. Our set sits in an area that would be hard to keep the door open. Would like to have a steam function, anyone have that and like or dislike it? Love to hear experiences and how long you have owned your set

I have a top loader that does not have an aggitator, so basically it's like an upright front loader.

The main reason why I choose this one, is because it's bigger than any front loader we ever found. and believe me we looked at tons and tons of places.

We've had it 3 years and I love it, we can wash our King size comforter in it and YES it cleans it.

My only regret was not getting a steam dryer ! I really wish we had. We love being able to toss a wrinky shirt in the dryer for 5 mins and steam it out. If we had the steam dryer, we could do that any time I wanted. now instead I have a fine mist spray bottle, that I spray in the shirt and inside of the dryer with to steam it out. works ok, but would still prefer to have the steam dryer.

I see you're in Jax. There's a guy on Beach blvd near Southside that buys old, broken appliances, fixes whatever is wrong, and sells them again as used for good prices. And most of the stuff he has was just a small part that needed replacing and the items are practically brand new but people are - in general - so stupid/lazy that they'd rather replace a nearly new appliance than get it repaired. We bought a fridge from him to leave in a house we sold last year that worked just fine and it was a good bit cheaper than buying new. You might want to check out a place like that for your replacements.

What model/brand do you have

OP, I don't have any recommendations - I'm in the same boat as you are. My 18 yr old washer and dryer are both on their last legs.

I've been looking online and for every machine I find, it seems that there are as many bad reviews as good ones. I'm leaning toward a top loader washer with an agitator. It's this one:

I got a Fisher Paykel washer on Craigslist and it's pretty cool. It is top loading. I don't have the matching dryer, I have a Maytag Neptune dryer and it works fine. The FP dryer we looked at was top loading- that was different. We have friends that were in the business and he recommended a Fisher Paykel over anything.

I think Best Buy has them.

i have a Fisher Paykel also - i think it was recommended to me on this board when i needed a new washer about 3 or 4 years ago. I don't have the matching dryer - just bought a dryer a few months ago.

We also have a Fisher Paykel washer. Got it probably 5 or 6 years ago at this point, and I keep waiting for my dryer to die, and the washer is so efficient, the darn dryer just keeps on chugging away.

LOVE the F-P washing machine. Water Saver, Energy Star, top loading, no agitator, holds a ton, spins so fast the clothes are just damp when they come out.

I'd buy another Fisher Paykel in a heartbeat.

I'm not sure if it would be easier than your system, but I wet a washcloth and throw it with the clothes to get the steam effect. Not as convenient as a steam dryer...just a tip in case it is easier than a mister!.

To OP: When you decide on a model, don't forget to check Craigslist, etc. Many people might come into a home and replace new appliances, simply because it wasn't their taste, etc.

That's my trick, too!
