Recommendation for fan/white noise?

Hi all,
For those of you that are like me and need the hum of a fan or constant white noise to sleep - what did you end up bringing on your cruise?

I have a medium size fan at home that I use, but I can't imagine packing it in my suitcase. Anybody buy a smaller fan for the purpose of travel and find it worked ok? If so, what kind?

I did buy a small fan to bring with me and it worker fine. I like you can not sleep with out the noise of my fan. I am sorry though i do not remember the name of it.

There are white noise machines available, but I'm not familiar with them, personally. I know that Barb (inkkognito) has written about using them. Check out her site Platinum Castaway Club , if you haven't already. There's a ton of great information there.

We sleep with a fan too. I have one of these that we use when we travel:

Sleep Mate

It sounds exactly like a fan, but is only about 5" across and 3" tall.

I highly recommend it!

Our whole family are sound machine addicts. We used to be fan addicts but it was an inconvenient addiction when we traveled so I converted all of us to HomeMedics sound machines. I got them on EBay for about $12.00 each and they are the size of a clock radio. The white noise feature sound just like a sound machine. I will definatley bring one on the cruise!!

Dodie - that Sleepmate looks AWESOME and probably something that would work really well, but not sure about the price..



I have tried a sound machine before but not for a whole week, so I may try that out before I leave to see if I too can be converted..

Hi! Dh and I sleep with a fan on as well, even in the winter. My ds has an alarm clock that also has "white noise" settings, there are several different choices, including rain forest, ocean waves (the one he usually uses), crickets (yuk!) and waterfall. We are planning on taking this clock with us instead of a travel clock. I think the clock came from Walgreens, but don't remember for sure. It wasn't very much $$.

I've had mine for almost 10 years. I use it every time we travel. It's very sturdy. Plus, it's "mechanical" vs. electronic, so the sound mimics a fan exactly. The electronic white noise machines I've listened to just sound "different" to me.

I bought mine from Penney's, so that's the link I gave you. Maybe you could do an internet search and find it somewhere else cheaper.

I know it's a little expensive, but I think it's been well worth it.

I have to have white noise to sleep. We tried the HomeMedics white noise machine and found that even on the white noise setting the sound had some repetition to it and it kept me awake. We bought a sound machine at Brookstone at our mall. They also have a website brookstone.com

It is the size of a small radio, but it works great! There are some other settings on it and the sounds have a very long loop so it doesn't sound like a broken record. The brookstone one costs $50, which is a bit much, but well worth the sleep.

You can take it on the cruise and use in your hotel rooms.

Thats the problem I had the few times I used a noise machine, Mister Bubbles, it was repititious and it kept me awake or made it not very easy to fall asleep - and now that I think about it, I believe it was the Homedics one and if I recall correctly, I bought it because it was so inexpensive.

Perhaps I will try to find a good price on the one you mentioned Dodie & Mr. Bubbles; like I said, it sounds just right for me and it will probably end up paying for itself the week I use it on the cruise as far as being able to sleep!

Tracey--we bought our sound machine at Sharper Image and it has white noise as one of the options plus nature sounds and waterfall type noises! When we went on the 4 day cruise and had room 8550 that was the ONLY way we were able to survive the chairs scraping on the ceiling above us was to crank that machine up as high as it would go. I have also heard of people bringing a clock radio with them to get white noise...dont know if that would help or not! I think our sound machine cost about $50 dollars. I think that the homedics ones tend to sound a little hollow for my taste but this one is really good. Also I swear I read someone on here used their television set on a channel that produced white noise but maybe I'm thinking of something else! If you dont want to carry a fan (might get some strange looks at the airport ) then maybe bring a clock radio with you. It would be worth a shot anyway and not very pricey..you could try it out at home and see if its something you could sleep with.

Another option, turn the TV in the cbain to a channel that isn't being broadcast on, and turn the brightness all the way down.
I work graveyard shift, and have for 23+ years, and I don't have a white noise machine, but there are times, like when the neighbor is using a chainsaw, when I need something to block out the noise, so I do that.

I'm a big fan of the Brookstone white noise alarm clock. I've tried many and I can't hear a repeat sound on this one. I did spend about $75 dollars for it but I was On vacation and had left my old one at home. So I made my husband drive me to a mall. It was that or kill him in his sleep(just kidding) His snoring is sooo bad. Well I hope I don't forget it today!!! My cruise leaves in a few hours and I need to finish packing instead of looking on the boards for last minute tips.

I have a small Homedics machine that runs on batteries. It was given to me as a baby shower gift. It even has "heartbeat" sounds for infants! Great little machine with rain, stream, reg white noise, etc.

I travel with a smallish round fan that I purchased at Walmart for less than $10. The fan itself is about 8 inches in diameter and it is on a stand so the whole thing is about 11 inches by 7 inches. It does take up some room in the suitcase but I just make sure it goes in first then I pack around it. It may be too big for some people but it works for me!

Look in the camping area. Coleman has a camping fan. My two boys are in boyscouts and take these on summer campouts to help keep cool. They are about 5 * 6 inches and 2 inches wide. They run on baterries. They would be easy to pack. I think we got ours at Target about 3 years ago. Good Luck!

- since my oldest son was a baby. We use them nightly & always definitely on our trips. In fact, when we road travel without stopping at hotels, we bring portable sm's in the car. Everyone is a light sleeper & this way the driver can listen to music, talk, etc.

We have several Sleep Mates & we've purchased them thru several places - JCP, Sears, SleepMate (I believe it's the link someone posted before) & a company in CA or WA that I believe was called something like, Nature's Tapestry or something like that. If you google 'white noise machines' or 'sound conditioners' you will probably find it.

We have always paid anywhere from $14.00 up to $60.00 - but they're all the same machines, basically. We do not prefer the ones with several sounds - just the straight white noise - that way there's no 'up & down' in the level. That wakes me up.

It was terrific having them on the ship. Drowned out all outside noises - like slammed cabin doors, people talking in the halls, etc.
