So I just had my sticker shock moment :earseek: ...and I am only an intimate. The thing is that we want to have our wedding at the WP and add on a vintage car and the MK photo session. That's about 5K with taxes. Then we want outside photography, a nice dinner (maybe the Napa room at the Cali Grill), and an Illuminations rehearsal party. Basically, that leaves me with the costs of a weekday custom for 20 guests. (Although I must admit, it does include tax, tip, and the outside vendor.) It is still a bit much for poor grad students, and I am not sure how much my parents will contribute (his parents can't help). We are going to have the "budget" talk with my family when we had down to Miami for the holidays, but our family is not exactly wealthy.

Thus, before I get too attached to Disney, I have decided to start looking into alternatives. As I reviewed my wedding priorities (again), I realized that I would really like a private dinner. On my wedding day, I don't want kids running around screaming and other guests moving about us. We want to have an intimate meal with the few people that really touch our lives. I thought of the Cali Grill and V&A's, but they would run us about $3800 with taxes and tip. After hearing about Janine's troubles to secure private dining after her intimate ceremony, I began to get nervous about my chances. I also thought of Palio's at the Swan. I contacted the private dining manager, and I am waiting to hear from him. I figure they won't give me any hassle, since their weddings don't work through FTW. My other option...and the reason for this thread...is to have the ceremony elsewhere (for example, Leu Gardens) and then have a Disney reception. Janine mentioned that the Yacht Club said she could have her beach party as a reception if she was married off-property. So I called the general convention services people today and they said I still have to work through FTW for just a reception. When I called FTW, they agreed that I would work through them. When I asked if the weekday minimum would still apply if I am only having a reception, they said that I would probably still have to meet the minimum, but it was too early to tell for 2007. That was quite a frustrating answer!
:badpc:

Anyways...I started this thread to find out if anyone had ever just planned a reception at Disney. Or if anyone has suggestions for private dining that won't be so expensive (maybe $2000) or recommendations for working my event through some other department. What makes me sad is that I would have happily met the $7500 minimum they used to have for customs. It seems that my DF and I waited too long to plan our wedding. Disney, why do you hurt me so.....? :sad1: OK...enough self-pity...back to dress shopping!!! :teeth: Thanks in advance for advice and tips!

My dear, I know exactly how you feel. I wanted the intimate wedding and the private dinner after and they told me that it could be done, at a restaurant and I would have to do it on my own; which would run me about 2500 for just the dinner. So, we looked into doing our wedding at the Swan/Dolphin so we could have all of those things without "custom wedding" cost. Someone on here gave these two websites to look at. www.justmarry.com and www.swandolphin.com These are great websites and when I was communicating with my Disney coordinator, it took days for her to get back to me, where as I just wrote to one of the women at the www.justmarry.com website and she has called me everyday that I send an email asking her a question to give me the answer. They're wonderful people. I'm working with Michele and Susan. See what you think. Its still on Disney property so you'll like it.

I have thought about the Swan, and I would be happy there. Unfortunately, my groomzilla...oh, sorry loving DF....does not like the pics of the outdoor locations. I am not going to through in the towel just yet on the Swan. I am going to take him by during our trip in December, so he can see them in person. It is pretty funny....I am more laid back about the ceremony than he is! Thanks for your input and support =) Please, let us know more details about the planning process with Justmarry. There are several couples on here that are considering the Swan as an alternative to Disney.

You might check some of Janet2K's trip reports. She has done some unbelievable events through Group Dining. There may be some limitations regarding wedding attire, but otherwise you could do something wonderful through there. One option we've done (on a limited basis) was an Illuminations party with more than just a dessert tray for food. They can do all kinds of meals, snacks, anything... and you get a great view of the show. Group Dining is to many areas of WDW like a conventions or large events organizer.

Does anyone have the number to Group Dining?

Janet, I hope you read this. Could you recommend a specific person to contact at group dining? Thanks!

I really want to wear my wedding dress...but this may be an excuse to have 2 dresses (one for the ceremony, and something cute and girly for the "reception").

Another question....Do the Portobello Yacht Club or Fulton's Crab House have private rooms? If so, are they nice..do they have view at all? Thanks!

Fultons crap house has a nice private area. Have you tried contacting the Dolphin directly? Only i know i saw a small intimate party on one of their outdoor balconies this year - looked really nice as thery were over looking the fountains and had loads of candles etc. Might be worth giving them a ring to see what they can offer?

Sorry for all of the crazy posts....but I can now answer my own questions. I called Portobello's in DTD and they said that for 20 guests you can use a private alcove. It is not closed off to the public, however. You need to call group dining to arrange the meal.

For Fulton's, you work with an outside company. I called the restaurant, and they provided me with the name and phone number for the contact person. She was very nice and immediately emailed me banquet menus and pics. The third deck of the restaurant has two private rooms with exterior space. The minimum for food and beverage right now is $1100 (keep in mind I am having a weekday dinner during early December). She mentioned that it might increase by $100-200 for a 2007 event. This is much cheaper than Disney options...and it is still on property with a lovely view of the lake. I am really excited!!! We might view the space in May when we are on vacation. I hope someone can benefit from this... :)
