Has anyone recently done the "pick a pearl " in Japan? It seems it is about $20 to pick a pearl and then you can buy something to set it in. What are the setting options and general prices?

In Nov 2017 it was $54 for 3 pearls. I bought cages ahead of time from Etsy so I can't help with the accessories.

We were there last month and it was $18 to pick a pearl and the setting will cost you from about $20 on up. For a necklace, this does not include a chain. They have several relatively inexpensive settings you can choose from. We were mostly focused on the necklaces, but you can also get earrings and rings made, I believe.

I also bought my settings from Etsy/Ebay, they're significantly cheaper. Not quite as nice though, so it depends on what you're looking for.

I bought a Cinderalla's carriage cage on Etsy for about $8.00 before our trip last summer and it was very nice!

I bought Sterling pearl cages from Amazon for my great nieces who were adorable picking their oysters and watching them being opened.

The girls are two pairs of sisters so each family got a Cinderella carriage and an Ariel cage which I really like. It’s actually nicer than the Amazon photos showed.

One problem, tho—one of the girls picked twin pearls which are more suitable for earrings due to their smaller size. I’m going to ask her mom to bring them and have them made into studs then let her pick another pearl.

Our trip is close to her birthday so the earrings and new pearl will be this year’s Bday gift to her. She will be 3 years old (going on 16—this one is amazingly mature for a toddler).

The "new" Pick-a-Pearl station in Japan is awesome-love the "overhead camera"!:)

They also have a cheaper option, a small bottle with sand that isn’t that bad. But I also bought cages online and took those with us.

Can anyone tell me, if I go when WS opens, how long would it take them to set my pearl in a simple necklace? I’m kind of hoping they can do it within an hour so I can just hang around and not have to come back later.

They give you a time to come back, usually 1-2 hours, depending on how busy they are. If you go late in the day (close to closing) there are limited options on the settings to choose from due to time. I always go early, lines are generally shorter.
