We are traveling on dd7 MAW trip in December and would love to hear about recent MAW experiences. I've tried to read every MAW and GKTW threads I can find and am so appreciative for all the great info! We are so excited about this trip and would love any tips to make the most of it. We've been to Disney many times, but not Universal in 10+ years and never IOA. Any tips on what not to miss with kids 9.7 and 4?

Thanks a million!

Hi - I don't know if our trip is recent enough (one year ago), but it was fantastic. GKTW is amazing! I am so thankful we had the opportunity to stay there. The villas are huge! The kids' bathroom is gigantic with a jacuzzi tub! The food at the Gingerbread House is good, hot and plentiful. And at the Ice Cream Palace, who can turn down free ice cream all day!! There is a snack cart that drives around with fresh hot chocolate chip cookies and milk!! YUM! We had every intention of eating most of our meals at the parks, but we ended up eating breakfast every morning at the Gingerbread House and for dinner, we would get our food there and take it back to our villa. We did make our ADRs for lunch ahead of time for the character meals we wanted to attend.

As for the parks, Universal and IOA go out of their way for the wish kids and their families. They treated us like royalty! It was FOTL for everything there. The CMs would pull us out of lines and take us to the front. As for character greets, same thing. And all the professional pictures they take are free. We got a bunch of 5X7s and an 8X10. My kids had a blast at IOA (we did too!!) Suess Landing is great fun! Oh, and for lunch, I highly recommend Mythos! It's fabulous!! I just asked my kids (ages 13 and 10) and they liked Dudley Do Rights and Spiderman. We did go to Universal, but we liked IOA much better. If you like roller coasters, The Mummy at Universal is great!

We went to Sea World - it was okay. Don't know if we would go back, though. However, our wish kid got sick that day so that may have tarnished my view on Sea World. She ended up seizing while we were waiting to get into Sharks Underwater Grill (very good, btw). They were very accomodating for us. In fact, that restaurant was perfect for our daughter post seizure. It's dark in there and they gave us a huge booth. She just curled up and slept while we ate (she doesn't eat regular food, so that wasn't an issue.) When she woke up, she was mesmerized by the sharks. By the end of the meal, she was much better. The CMs kept asking if there was anything they could do for us. Letting her sleep and not rushing us was the best thing they did! As for the park, my kids were a little on the bored side. It's a beautiful park. I did find it hard to navigate, though. We kept getting turned around. One thing I didn't like was that most of the attractions are shows and you have to get to the shows pretty early to get a seat. That means that you do a lot of sitting and waiting. However, we really enjoyed Pets Ahoy. It was funny and cute.

I hope this helps. Feel free to pm me with any questions. I love talking about GKTW!! Have fun planning!! Oh - I see you are going to be there in December. It was October when we went. We did go to MNSSHP and it was the highlight of our trip. I bought the tickets months in advance. It was so worth it! It gave us 4 days at WDW instead of the 3 day tickets that you will receive from GKTW. We entered the MK at 4 with just our MNSSHP tickets. So I would imagine that the Christmas party would be the same.

Great one! We leave in less than 3 weeks, Nov. 14th, for DD's WISH trip and we are also staying at GKTW. I am anxious to hear from everyone who has been there for their trip. We are very excited yet nervous about flying. This will be our first vacation ever as a family and DD is now 21! So it's been a looong time coming. I am concerned about her getting on and off the plane. Delta has been told she will need assistance as she is in a wheelchair and cannot transfer etc. Can someone let me know about the ear thing. I heard to have the kids chew gum on take off and landing. Exactly how long after take off do we need to keep them chewing gum, and how soon before landing to start back up? Hope this isn't a silly question. We all have bad allergies and have problems with head pressure as is. (no jokes needed ;-)

Does anyone know if they have a nitelite for the kids bedroom in the villas? My DD can't sleep without one. Just not sure what all I need to pack. Also we haven't received a welcome pack from our WISH granters. How soon to the trip is it that we should be getting this? I am antsy I suppose trying to get it all together. I want my plane tix in hand lol!

I am trying to get some sort of Itinerary together but am having the worst time. I am in panic mode now. So many have it all together to what times they see what show and where to eat. Me I have no clue. Pathetic isn't it? Last time I went to WDW was on my honeymoon and that was over 23 years ago. I can't remember much about it and it's all changed anyway. Any info is much appreciated.

18 days to go!!!

Hi there, we went on our MAW trip to WDW in May of this year. We had an incredible time. I envy you the time of year you are going as it was blazing hot and humid when we went. AND you get the Christmas decorations which I'm sure are going to be fantastic.

Purple Princess - we didn't get our welcome package from our wish granter until about a week or so before our trip. It's hard to be patient isn't it?

I'm not sure how things vary from chapter to chapter, but we didn't have to really worry about much. MAW and GKTW took care of us, just about from the minute you leave until you come home, but it doesn't hurt to do the research and be prepared. A rep from GKTW met us at the airport with a luggage cart, took us to the luggage area then escorted us to the car rental place and made sure we understood the map to get to the GKTW property!

On our flight to Florida, another Wish family was on board, all the kids were invited to see the cockpit before take off and they were acknowledged by the pilot over the PA (but I'm sure that varies from pilot to pilot, as our return flight was not that way)

We did not stay at GKTW as they were fully booked but we were invited to spend as much time there as possible and eat as many meals as we could there. We were placed at a Disney hotel which was awesome, but of course a little bit of a drive from GKTW (their directions that they provide you are pretty darned good). GKTW is an incredible place. I do wish that we could have stayed there as there was so much to do. We did manage to squeeze in a bit of mini golf, splashing at the water park, fishing, horse ride, carriage ride, train ride, arcade games, a visit with Santa, a birthday party complete with a beauty queen, and of course ice cream. And keep in mind, this is all when we weren't at the parks!

The people at WDW really treat you well. Make sure that badge is very visable as that is your "ticket" to the FOTL. It makes such a huge difference, especially if your Wish child doesn't have the energy to wait in line for hours and hours. We actually didn't even ride all that many rides as our dd was mostly interested in autographs and pictures with Characters. If that is your aim, be sure to visit the Character Connections at Epcot as the classic Disney characters will pose for a group photo with your family (otherwise you line up for each character). I had read about it from another wish trip and I was in tears it was so touching. It was very special.

We had a nice time at Sea World, but the park is a bit confusing and quite large. We did not get the free photo's that I read about, so be aware that it may just depend on the knowledge of who you ask. (we ended up buying photos) The killer whale show is quite amazing. Also be aware that if you would like to feed the dolphins that the feeding times are scheduled. We went when we were ready and missed the feeding time. Oops.

I did get sick on my trip, so I will say, get lots of rest before you go, don't stress out too much and wash wash wash your hands. (I spent a full day at the hotel in the room)

The weather was a bit too hot for my kids, but they still had a fantastic time. We did as much as dd could handle then retreated to the hotel or the air conditioned car for a break, then headed back for more. You are so lucky to be going in December. I've read elsewhere that you will likely need sweatshirts or jackets for night time.

If food is very important to you, then do try to make some advanced reservations (our trip included a budget for some meals). We ate many fast food counter meals which were good, but got a bit tired after a while. Our best and only "proper" meal was at an Irish pub at Downtown Disney which was fantastic. The rotisserie chicken options at counter service was usually a nice change from hamburgers and hotdogs, and if you aren't into the huge portions, the kids meal (which includes a drink) was a good amount and a good price. I thought the food at GKTW was okay. It changed everyday and you were informed of the choices via the Village Voice newsletter everyday which was really neat. I saw the golf carts which were cool, they brought cold breakfast (and coffee) to your villa in the morning and coffee, milk cookies etc at bedtime. Pizza is always an option at dinner time if what is being offered isn't to your liking (and McDonalds is not that far away)

If you plan to see the firework shows at any of the theme parks, it is worth it to ask a CM if there is an area for wheelchairs as they are usually roped off and not crowded (if you have the pass for wheelchairs) it makes a difference when you are trying to make the most of the time and energy your child may have. Not having to wait an hour or more to get a good spot for the fireworks is a nice thing. Not all the parks may have these areas though and some parks have more than one, so ask which one is the best one, and ask early so you have time to get to it. (we asked late and then had to run)

My I have gone on haven't I? Well that's about it I think. If you have any other questions just ask. Hope you have a great time.

Thanks for all the great info!!! Keep it coming as it is so much fun to plan and dream about this magical trip!

DJBounce, thanks for the tips on IOA. It's very helpful since that's new to us.

Mumchum, thanks for the EPCOT Character Connections idea, sound like a must!

A few more questions...
Were the Disney tickets park hoppers or single day?

How many US/IOA tickets were there, and were they park hopper or whatever they might call it? It sounds like IOA would be the choice if only one day is available.

I'm trying to plan where we go when...so far the definite one is MK on Tues the day we have breakfast with Cinderella (a first for us to eat in the castle), and we'd also like to go to MK once more on Fri to catch our favorite rides again and see the fireworks before leaving. After that we are open, but it sounds like we might skip SeaWorld. It wasn't high on my priorty list as we've done it a few years back.

Purple Princess, you must be so excited with 3 weeks to go...we're at 7 and I can hardly stand it. As for flying and ears...my kids have never had a problem with it. When I was younger, I used to chew gum especially when ascending to the flying altitude and then again during the last half hour while descending. Yawning helps to clear plugged up ears too. Maybe giving them snacks to munch on would be another alternative as the swallowing will help pop the ears. Hopefully you'll get some more ideas. I hope you have a magical trip and can't wait to hear about it!!

PixiePoppins: The tickets are 3 day hoppers to WDW, 2 day hoppers to US/IOA and 1 day to Sea World.

Purple Princess: As for the nightlight, my DH swears there was one. I don't remember one. They're small, I would pack one just to be on the safe side.
And we received our packet, our check, and a TON of stuff about one week before we left.

Thanks so much for the info everyone. It's helping me too. Here is a question I probably shouldn't even ask but here goes: if we are in MK park the day of MVMCP, would they allow a Wish family to stay for the party if they hadn't bought a ticket? I ask because I know a family that went last year for a WISH trip and they were always allowed to stay for EMH even though they weren't staying at a Disney hotel. My kids want to do the party but hubby is being stingy and doesn't want to pay for the tix %#@%. I am trying to wear him down. What bothers me about the party on the night we will be there, Nov. 17th, is I am told they won't have all the special shows etc. that they'll have after Thanksgiving at MVMCP. Just not sure it would be worth paying for tix if there wasn't much to see or do. Has anyone been at this time?

Thanks again for all advice. Much appreciated.

I just checked on this for you. The answer I got back was that first you could talk to your coordinator at GKTW to see about tickets. If nothing comes of that, on the day of the event go into City Hall (Guest Services) at MK and ask; a decision would be made at that time.

I got the impression from the person that I talked to that the decision would be yes, but he could not say that to me over the phone.

DJBounce--Can you believe it's already been almost a year since our MAW trips?!

Another word of praise for GKTW. The people there were great! We had car trouble one day and they were very helpful. My boys loved the wheelchair accessible carousel, ice cream parlor and all the nightly events. The villa was very nice. It also had a washer/dryer. I loved how big the accessible bathroom was.

We had a great time at the parks. I really enjoy planning, so I made a bunch priority seatings ( or whatever they are called now) for character meals. We especially enjoyed Chef Mickeys, Liberty Tree Tavern, and Crystal Palace. We also did the spiderman/cat in the hat breakfast at IOA. My boys can't transfer from their chairs, but there were some rides like Buzz Lightyear that could accomodate a chair, plus we did shows, parades and saw characters. All the CMs were very nice.

Have a magical trip! :wizard:

I just posted a short review of my dd's trip a few weeks ago. You can find more detail and a bunch of pictures at her website, www.carepages.com You have to register (it's free) and her page name is Michelle5

We had an amazing time to say the least!

OK, having posted quite frequently now I feel I'm ready for my first potential flaming. Here goes with my question and please be kind:

Here in Canada, we have a number of wish granting organizations. While many fulfill the wonderful dreams of children with terminal illnesses, there is at least one that does send children with life-long chronic illnesses and conditions (such as cerebral palsy).

Our son has cerebral palsy. We were actually offered a wish, but we turned it down. We are fortunate that we can afford to pay our way and we chose to do this ourselves. It makes my heart so happy to hear of the many families who are granted wishes and I am so glad for them. This is not a whine about anybody!!!

Here is my question: Disney is careful to explain that the ride queues are accessible and that guests in wheelchairs can usually wait in the lines, that they do not get to "front of the line" etc. It is clear that Wish families are given special treatment and they deserve it. However, my son has heard from some of his friends, also with physical disabilities and using wheelchairs, that they "hardly waited at all." This has started to build up expectations...

We leave later this week and I want to manage expectations. I think I have prepared my boys for waiting...fingers crossed that they will manage it well!

Would anyone be willing to give me an idea of their experiences with non-Wish, physically disabled, wheelchair-using young children (my boys just turned 8 last week)? Our son can easily be transferred as he is still very small and he is fairly mobile (uses a walker).

Finally does anyone have any warning of attractions where the wheelchair seating ends up being "worst of the house?" We may try to park and "walk" (with hand support, he can walk a little and we could get him into an aisle seat).

Thank you!

What kinds of things do you get in your packet? We leave on Dec. 2nd. all the kids are excited, especially my DD7 who is the wish child. She will need her adaptive stroller due to fatigue from several strokes. We are hoping that it wont be an issue.

Our trip was through a local wish organization rather than through Make a Wish. A few days before we left our wish coordinator brought our plane tickets, an expense check and t-shirt for Mickey. You get your actual park tickets that GKTW at your orientation.

My trip report is on our family's website at www.deputyfamily.net. Click on "kickin' cancer's butt" and scroll down to April 29 for the first day.
