Recent Crowds

We were at the MK on Tuesday, the 5th. It was an EMH morning and was pretty crowded, I thought. We rode IASW first, a tradition, first thing at 8. When we got off, Peter Pan already had a 20 minute wait. We fastpassed it and did Buzz, then Pooh. We were very fortunate and won dream Fastpasses, so the rest of the day was a breeze.

By 9:45 BTMRR was a 35 minute wait. I guess that's not terrible, but I was glad we had fastpasses (which we had to wait to use until 10:05).

POTC was a walk-on at 10.

We skipped Dumbo and such with the slow-loading lines. Dumbo was 45 minutes by 9:30. No way I said!

We were only there for the 1 day at the parks and camping the rest of the time, so it was only a snapshot.

Quick note---DM, DD and myself were there on Sunday night and it was HEAVING! Everything was at least 30-40 minutes, with most big rides going into 60-70 minutes. We went on Cinderella's carousel, pirates (which was the shortest line in the park at 10 minutes??? nothing else was near that), and as DD calls it "the bird show".

Although I will say---we didn't see any tour groups! None!

Just got back from Typhoon Lagoon. We left before 2:00 and a lot of people were just getting there. It seemed really packed when we left, but not bad before Noon! Saw one group, but it looked to be a Summer Camp.

Oh, one question, are thongs allowed at WDW? Not that I would ever wear one, but I noticed one lady in one. It just kind of shocked me.

Just returned and crowds are definitely down. Hardly waited for anything except Toy Story and Everest. Tuesday, 8/5 crowds (and heat) seemed to be increasing.

It was a wonderful seven-day trip, but I have to say, that after more than ten trips over twenty-seven years, the magic is definitely slipping. Even with the low crowds the parks were not as clean, CM's don't seem to be trained in the "old way."

I have to agree that the parks are not as clean as they used to be. Many of the restrooms are in desperate need of cleaning, and even the flower gardens need work. I remember when they replaced old plants every night to keep the gardens perfect. I think the magic is slipping partly because of the economy today but mostly because of the behavior and attitudes of many of the guests. When people let their children play in flowerbeds and destroy plants, string toilet paper all over the floor, throw paper towels on the floor instead of trash cans, etc., I don't know how anyone could keep things looking like they used to. The attitude of guests is affecting the CMs, too. Most of them are fantastic, but I have seen several this year who were rude and argumentative. I can't blame them, and as a teacher, I understand their frustrations when people ignore their polite requests and refuse to do as they tell them even when they explain it is for the guest's safety. I think the CMs do a great job considering the now-common attitude so many people have that "This is my vacation, and I can do anything I want to do". Many CMs impressed me a lot with the way they acknowledged special-needs kids and make them feel very special. I am having a wonderful 10-day trip, and I'll always love Disney World. I'm just not sure it is the "Happiest Place on Earth" for everyone anymore.

I noticed back in 2004 (my last trip) that things looked old and worn.

There was a leak in the monorail dripping water into the cabin seating area... the CM fix was a rag to sop up the water.

Don't remember anything about the bathrooms but I do remeber those horrible mini street sweepers the CM's pushed around cleaning up people trash... they were SO LOUD... whatever happened to a team of CMs with their broom and dust pan on a stick?

Glad you had a wonderful time and the weather held off all week. Of course the down side to no rain is HOT temps but rains coming this weekend!

Just got back from 1 week trip and was much slower than I expected at the beginning (Sunday) and then got crazy on Monday - DHS very busy Tuesday with all fast passes for TSM gone before noon and over 100 minute standby wait, MK was very busy yesterday with all mountains at 75+ minutes standby. The heat was the thing over the last 2 days - it is oppressive right now, hope it cools down for anyone going soon.

The parks are most definitely not empty. :) I think their discount codes did the trick.

Thanks for the reports!

I wonder if the fact that value season started on 8/3 increased the crowds over last week.
We just got back last night. We had been there since last Thursday. When we got there the crowds didn't seem that bad. We were at OKW and the villa we stayed in was down a little "side street" towards the end. There were very few cars parked in that area at the other villas the first few days, but later in the week there were noticeably more cars so I'm guessing things have picked up with the start of value season. The crowds seemed to be a little larger in the parks also. You can still get around without it being too bad though. My biggest advice that seemed to helped most all days is get there very early (rope drop) and try to get the big things done quickly and get the fastpass for the most popular ride first thing. DHS you better go straight to TSM first thing. If you do it at rope drop you can fastpass and ride rather quickly, but later in the morning we went by and the line was very long out in the street, and fastpasses are gone quickly. TSM has definitely changed the crowd distribution as it seemed much more crowded in DHS every time we were there. We followed the typical plan for the busiest days at the different parks and the crowds were usually manageable that way. The last couple of days the heat and humidity were very oppressive, and we would hit the things we really wanted to do and then we were ready to head back to the room regardless. Typically avoid EEMH parks, although we had a great experience early with MK, but later in the week no way. We were in DHS Wed night during EEMH (didn't want to but were afraid to put Fantasmic off again since rain was being forecast for Thursday evening and it was cancelled when we were there Tuesday. We got our wristbands and never used them after the show because of the crowds. Thursday evening DSs decided to go back into the parks and commando all their favorite rides one last time before heading home and they spent a lot of time at DHS and said most things were walkon (ToT seven straight times and had to wait a few minutes only once) and they went back to the 10:30 show of Fantasmic and walked right in and sat down front.

Thanks everyone!!

I've been watching and the temps haven't changed much, but I bet the humidity has...either that or the site I'm watching isn't super accurate. :)

You're right. Not much change if any in the temperature numberwise, but there was a noticeable increase in the humidity. The last couple of days it was obvious earlier in the morning. There were threats of rain late in the day on Wed and Thurs, and there was already a pretty heavy rain storm around lunchtime yesterday when we were trying to leave. We went by AKL to get some pictures and a storm blew in while we were there. It delayed our departure (awwww) and we were planning to leave via I-4 but the storm had moved towards Orlando proper and I-4 looked almost like a parking lot. I don't know if there was a wreck from the storm or traffic had slowed to a crawl because of it. We headed back the way we came so we had to go back through WDW and approximately 2 hours after pulling out of OKW we drove right back by the entrance (after a visit to AKL, filling the car with gas, and grabbing a bite to eat at Chik-Fil-A.

The good news is that gas prices finally went down right before we left. The Hess stations on site were $3.79 when we got there, and Thursday night while we were out they were still the same. When we headed out Friday morning it had dropped to $3.75, but offsite where we got gas we paid $3.68 I think. Prices were noticeable lower on I-75 as we came home through Georgia and we paid in the $3.50s when we filled up on the way home.

I've been reading some this thread ... and the crowds seem to go up and down in August, not really that predictable. Historically, do you guys think the crowds will go down a bit the second half of August? Are enough schools in session at that point that it makes a difference?

We'll be there Aug 17-24. I figured it was later August, plus it's the week before free dining, so it might not be totally insane. We've only been to Disney in October and January, so I know this will be much more crowded. I can deal with a 30 minute wait ... but do you think there will still be a lot of hour waits (or longer)?????

You're probably going during a pretty good time. Historically I think this would be a less crowded time. We usually go around the last of July, first of August and it seemed to typically be less crowded. It just depends on the time of day and park you pick. As I've said in a few other places, take advantage of MEMH and/or rope drop. Typically this meant much shorter wait times for us. Later in the day the most popular rides had much longer waits. TSM is a must do early as fastpasses are typically gone by lunchtime and the waits are in the 100 minute range.

We spent 3 days (7-9 August) at the parks last week. We used the UG best days recommendations, and those recommendations happened to coincide with the strategy we like to use--going to a park the day after it has an evening EMH.

We found that really helped in the morning. We never waited longer than 10 minutes for any attraction before noon. But by the afternoon it was very crowded, and the evenings were packed. If you wanted to ride an E attraction in the evening, your 2 choices were FP (if available) or waiting for a long time in standby. Saturday night, we waited 30 minutes in the FP line for Space (it had been up and down with mechanical issues all evening, which didn't help), and we waited about that long in the FP line for BTMRR, too.

The day we were at DHS, TSM FPs were gone by noon. Soarin ran out of FPs by early afternoon, and Test Track ran out by late afternoon. Space and RnRC ran out by early evening. OTOH, BTMRR and Splash FPs were available almost all day.

It was crazy crowded trying to catch monorail transportation out of Epcot the evening we were there. Saturday night MK had Wishes at 10 but was open until midnight, and it was much easier getting the monorail that evening.

We were in WDW from Sunday, August 3 through Friday, August 8. We have traveled there most of the past 12 years, usually the first week of August. I thought the crowds were among the worst I have ever seen, in terms of numbers. We always have a plan, use fastpass extensively and arrive at the park gate 30 minutes before opening. We managed to get on most rides eventually, but it felt like work most days. Note that we have teens, have visited many times, and so are less likely to ride certain things that might have been less crowded (like Hall of Presidents, or the Tiki Birds, maybe?). Saw only a few small tour groups. There were plenty of people from all over...England and Canada certainly, but many also from the US.

A few highlights:
Sunday the 1st we did the late night at MK. Although the crowds were large right up until the 2 a.m. closing (when we waited 30 minutes for Space Mountain - maybe because they had been giving out Fast Passes for this ride, and not for most others) we did manage to get on many rides that night, and some (Splash Mountain and Thunder Mountain) were about 10 to 15 minute waits. Overall, this was a fun if tiring experience.

The Toy Story effect is nuts...so many people running there first thing. We went to DHS two mornings, one regular opening and one early. Both were crazy crowded. We rode Rock 'n Roller Coaster first, as this is our absolute favorite, then got fast passes for that and went over to ride Toy Story. We waited 20 mintues on the regular morning, and 40 on the early entry day. Note that on the early entry day, the posted wait time was 80 minutes! This line does move fairly quickly, so I think unlike Soarin' or Test Track, the wait is usually a lot less than what is posted.

Animal Kingdom on a non-early entry day was also mobbed. We managed 4 attractions in a morning: Everest, got FP for Kali River, waited 20 minutes for Safari, went back to ride Kali then saw the first show of Nemo which was completely filled. By noon, you couldn't walk comfortably anywhere, so we left.

Epcot late night opening was a bust for us. There were no fastpasses being given out, and the lines were 90 to 110 minutes long for Soarin' and Test Track. We even waited 20 minutes for Spaceship Earth. We did not watch Illuminations but tried to do rides instead. Managed the Nemo ride with a short wait.

One day, we returned to our hotel from MK via Epcot, and at 12:30 got FP for Soarin' for 6 p.m. that evening. We watched some entertainment at World Showcase - thank goodness for Off Kilter and some of the other great performers there - they make it worth visiting when you can't get on rides.

Our last night we went to Epcot, where we decided to wait the posted 50 minutes for Test Track. Of course, it rained after we were in line for 45...but we were not close to getting on the ride yet, so the wait would have been more like 70 minutes I think. We went to Universe of Energy instead, then rode Spaceship Earth (short wait) and then went and waited 60 minutes for Soarin' (posted as 70, but after 9 p.m. the fast pass people stop coming so the line speeds up).

We still had a fun week, and especially enjoyed the hotel pool and our two days away from the parks. (We had planned Blizzard Beach one day but decided on the pool instead, which was wonderfully relaxing.)
Anyway, hopefully all these wonderful visitors have returned home, and those of you going in the next few weeks will have better luck.

It was hot, but nothing worse than the usual Florida-in-the-summer stickiness. I did not think that things looked worn or dirty. In fact, we never once encountered a ride that went down, which I thought was amazing given the long park hours and high crowd levels. The employees we encountered were good humored overall, again given the heat and crowds I was impressed by them.

My BIL and his family just got back Sunday and they said it was "CRAZY"busy.:crazy2: They said the waits the the rides were horrible. Like1.5 hours. And the heat was almost unbareable. We go in 28 days and hope things calm down for us. It usually is better that time of year. :goodvibes

We just got back Saturday night. We were there the 2nd through the 9th. This was our first real trip (stayed at AKL) and we were expecting the worst. We were pleasantly surprised that the crowds didn't seem *that* bad. It was very hot and humid but we just made an extra effort to be at the parks at opening and leave after lunch for napping and swimming. We usually went back to the parks after 5. Those times where really crowded except for Epcot on Thursday (which was also EMH). I guess everyone was in line b/c the standby lines for Soarin', TT & MS where all around 45-80min.

Overall it was a great trip!

We just got back from a trip last week 8/2 - 8/9 and we didn't wait more than 20 minutes to ride anything we rode. Used planning with the UG and fast passes, single rider lines where available and did all the late EMH's...had a great time.

We were there August 1st through 9th. Crowds got large around 11am, but we got there at opening each day and it made a huge difference. For example, we arrived at DHS 30 min prior to opening, and rode R'n RC and ToT twice each in less than an hour! Later in the day lines were long.
Best advice you're going to get, arrive EARLY, we got most E ticket attractions done before crowds arrived 10:30 - 11am.
