We took DD6 to an orthopedic surgeon 2 years ago and he suggested custom made orthotics for her flat feet. She wore them for months, but then they seemed to be rubbing her feet, so we figured they were too small & stopped putting them in her shoes. We had purchased an insurance policy for the orthodics, so it would be 35 to have them remade, and more to have new larger ones made. Problem is that we didn't realize the policy expires in two weeks. We will be at Disney starting next week, and Mon is a holiday. Her Dr is unavailable, and I have not had any luck with finding a fill in Dr. Last time she was at her pediatrician's office, I brought it up, and the Dr said I shouldn't bother getting them. We paid over 300 for the original ones. Would you keep trying to find a Dr to recast her in the next few days, or don't bother, as the pediatrician instructed?

I had a pair of custom made orthotics once. I hated them They actually killed my feet. Then I got a diagostic by one of the world marathon runners, Stu Middleman who set some world record for running. Once he assertained my foot problem (the flat feet,) he sold me these premade sports orthotics which have a high arch in which I can insert into any sneaker or shoe. (Take out the stock insole.) They are wonderfully springy & cushy and do the trick. My sneakers last longer as I don't just wear the inner side of the heels down faster than the rest of the shoe and I no longer have arch pain.

They are so much more comfortable than the custom made orthotics.

Flat feet is not that unusual a problem. Dig around online, you might be able to find something premade in child sizes that you can continually swap out for larger sizes.

Some brands have higher arches as well and are good for flat feet. My daughter's orthopedist recommended New Balance tennis shoes. I find that if I shop at a real children's shoe store and get the owner or manager to wait on me, they can also recommend other brands. The orthopedist also said to not buy cheaply made shoes. He never recommended the insoles.

Does the insurance policy cover replacement due to her feet growing or only in the event of breakage? I know that a lot of custom orthotic manufacturers will cover the latter but not the former.

I'm still recovering from bilateral post tib tendonitis that began in July. If I didn't overpronate so much, it probably never would have happened in the first place. The orthopaedic suggested custom orthotics and I ordered them from an online company. The first pair was $160 with additional pairs costing another $90 each. The podiatrist wanted $450 for a single pair.

Should you get the inserts? I don't know. My parents had me in orthopaedic shoes for about 2 years but the expense got to be too much. Maybe if they had kept me in those custom shoes I wouldn't have the problems I had this summer. But there's no telling and I certainly don't blame them for choosing to feed & clothe me and my sibs instead of shelling out the big bucks for ugly shoes.

We bought custom orthotics for my DD and she wore them for quite a while. But she never really felt that they were comfortable. She misplaced them right before a big track meet and we bought a pair of Dr. Scholl arch supports and she likes the Dr. Scholl's much better. Her feet and ankles feel better than they ever did with the expensive custom orthotics.

Yes she has probably out grown them, That is what happened to my DS when he out grew his. Yes he has been recasted actually three times since he started wearing them 10 years ago. He was 7 when he started. I to wear orthodics and it was recommended by and otheopedic surgeon as well, I would think it probably would be in your DD best interest to get recasted. I have been wearing orthodicts since I was 10 years old, so that's been about 31 years know. I do know the difference when I am not wearing them and they do bother me If I dont wear them. Is your DD wearing her orthodics, if not, does she feel any difference not wearing the. Also if you are unsure, maybe go back to the orthepdic doctor and see what he/she thinks. They would know best.

Have you considered the Good Feet store-they sell arch supports...
I can't find shoes w/good arch support- so I have these inserts from the Good Feet Store & have used them for years...just slide them in & out of shoes....

Depending on which one of the many causes of flat feet that he has I would buy molded orthotics. DD has 3 of the main reasons for flat feet and the doctor has sais that if she doesn't wear hers she will need surgery as she gets older. Wearing them doesn't rule out the surgery but it does lessen the need for it later in life. If you can find a doctor that will do it ... I say go for it. Where did you find an insurance policy that would cover them???
