Rebel Alliance Roll call

:welcome: deleckidesign (and possibly DH) to the team! We are a pretty new team compared to the others, but we are very talkative and friendly! Just step right in and introduce yourself.

Hi! It's probably just going to be me on here. DH will be running with me, but doesn't get into the whole message board thing.

I introduced myself on the bio thread, but I'll do it again here.

My name is Michelle and I'm 27 and live in Michigan with my husband Doug (30, soon to be 31) and our 2 cocker spaniel furbabies

I work as a graphic designer for a newspaper and hubby is an accountant (looking for work). Last year was a tough year for us as we both lost our jobs within a month of each other, and I lost both of my grandpa's. Amidst all the bad news of last year, there was some good news. We both decided it was time to get healthy and in shape. We both lost about 30 lbs each last year!

I was a track and cross country runner in high school (10 years ago), but DH has never been a runner. We both enjoy playing basketball, football and softball together. So when I mentioned trying a half marathon, it seemed like something fun for us to do together and a great goal to keep us motivated to stay in shape. So...we signed up for the Festival 500 Mini (half) in Indianapolis this May. My step-mother has done this one 3-4 times and said it was so much fun...so she's doing it again this year!

This will be our FIRST half marathon each, so we're both super excited. We start our training this week!

We're already thinking of signing up for the Disney full marathon next January :)

Looking forward to getting to know all you Rebels :yay:

Welcome:wave2:deleckidesign (Michelle and DH)
It is good to have you here.
Congratulations on that great weight loss.
Looking forward to hearing about all your training experiences.

Welcome Michelle!!!

Katie. Another big one comming. I missed the last one. The high pressure system kept the snow about 15 miles south of us.

As for me, I went to the gym this morning and hit it pretty hard. I did 2.1 miles on the treadmill and chest, bis and tris. Pretty sore right now. I love it.

My wife is doing well. She is not officialy on bed rest but has been told to take it easy. We had a little scare last week but all seems well now. The baby is great. Hopefully all will be well for the next 10 weeks or so.

I am so darn sore from snowboarding with the kids yesterday that I don't know if I will hit the treadmill today or not. Everything hurts. That statement should be edited to say "so darn sore from ATTEMPTING to snowboard.

Hey everyone. I haven't checked-in in a couple of days. I missed Saturday and Sunday because of the 3' of snow we got. Plenty of cross-training in the form of shoveling though and another 10-20" of snow coming tonight and tomorrow  I was able to find a road clear enough to run yesterday and today though. I did 3.2 miles yesterday and 3.14 this morning. Yesterday was 6 minute running intervals and today was 8 minute intervals. You can check out my runs here... http://runkeeper.com/user/jsun/activities

BTW-cwnhokie, I just submitted my application to VT today :woohoo:

j-sun, what gave you the impression that I like VT? Just kidding. Once a Hokie always a Hokie! Good Luck!

Welcome Michelle, good luck to you and DH.

Scott, glad you're wife and the baby are doing well.

Week 1 of my half-marathon training is done and I did day one of week 2 today and it is going pretty well. Just want to say that we had about one inch of snow this week-end and it was not enough to use my snowblower :rotfl2:.
A lot of new people and I will now go read the last 3 pages.

Diane

Congrats on completing Week 1 of training! Sorry you didn't get to use that snowblower. The first time I read that, I thought it said 'sunflower.' I was like, "why does she want to use a sunflower?":rotfl:

They announced today that we are expecting 10-18" more snow tonight. Groan! I am barely shoveled out from the 20" we got this weekend. There is no where left to put the snow. :P Oh well. I will be spending some time with my treadmill his evening.

Jeez, Katie. You guys just can't catch a break. We have a 50% chance of flurries tomorrow and everyone is all atizzy again. We've gotten more snow these past two weeks than we've had in decades, and people seem to have forgotten how to handle it. :sad2:

Michelle, welcome! It sounds like you and hubby had a rough year. I'm glad it's looking up. Good for you guys for losing the weight, and how wonderful that you can do it together. Sounds like this half marathon in May will be a family affair for you, that's great!

Yay, Scott! That's good news. Better safe than sorry, so tell her to take it easy. I hope things go smoothly and uneventfully for the next 10 weeks.

You went out a found a road clear enough to run on? That's dedication.

I hope you get into VT. I'm not quite as fanatical, I mean supportive, of the Hoakies as cwnhokie, though.;)

:welcome: deleckidesign (and DH) to the team!
I am glad to see another couple on here! Like you guys, I post for the two of us because my husband doesn't like to get on the computer after work. We are doing all of our training runs together as we prepare to run our first ever half marathon at wdw. You two are doing those 13.1 miles sooner than we are! Where did you find your training program?
We have a few 5k's lined up and a 10k on May 1st. We only started running last fall. I can't wait to hear more about how you run together. Is your DH faster than you? (Boys are made that way!) What time of day do you find time to run together?
So glad you joined us!
~Barb (& Bob)

Andrea - Thanks so much for the information on resizing the graphic! As you can see...I got it figured out with your directions! :thumbsup2

Diane - Good job on your marathon training! I am impressed with everyone who can already run those distances.

Katie - Sounds like you are getting a lot of snow and probably a lot of extra exercise shoveling out!

Michelle - :welcome: Hello and welcome! I am another member of the group who runs with DH (he does not post here or read the thread even). It is great that you and your husband are supporting each other with the weight loss and the running!

Scott - I am so happy to hear that your wife is doing well right now! With 10 weeks to go, it is good that she is taking it easy. I had to spend the last 14 weeks of my pregnancy on bed rest and it is no fun. Glad that you were able to get your exercising in at the gym! Hope the snow stays south again.

cwnhokie - I laughed when I read your post about snowboarding! I tried snowboarding a couple of years ago and felt like all I did was fall...the entire day. I was so sore that I could not stand it! Good for you to try it! It is a lot of work to learn how to snowboard. Can't wait to hear if you were able to get on the TM and actually workout after that experience.

j-sun - Wow! Lots of snow! I think it was great that you were able to get out and find a road to run on. Thanks for sharing your run information. It is so helpful as a beginning runner to be able to see what others are doing in their trainings.

Barb - Your questions to Michelle made me think about what it is like to run with my DH. I do have a hard time running with him. He is 6'5" (I am 5'9") and his legs are SO very much longer than mine. Some days, when I am feeling really good, I keep up with him. There are other days where I feel like I am taking 2 steps every time he takes 1...and it is hard! Finding time to run together was a bit of a challenge since we have 2 busy kids and we often feel like we are always running around in the car! One thing we did do was we started finding little pockets of time to run together. For example, DD has dance for 1 hour on Thursday nights. We decided that we would drive her to dance and run on the roads over by her studio for that hour. We have been really creative but it is working great. While it is hard to run with him at times, it is so helpful to have a running partner.

AFM - Went to WW today, loss 2.4 pounds for the week! I have now loss a total of 15 pounds since New Years Day. That made me happy because I have not tracked my food as carefully as I should have. I am focusing on resting a bit more. Ran on Sunday, did cross training for 30 minutes on Monday (Wii Active), ran today and tomorrow will be a day of rest. Today I did pilates and 1 mile on the TM before work. After work, DH and I would normally run together but we had to do the TM tonight since they are still plowing roads. I did week 5, day 2 of C25K on the TM and added 2.5 more miles to my daily total. Have a great night everyone!

Hi everyone! We are snowed in again here in PA-no running for me today! We were scheduled to do 4 miles today. I haven't run since Sunday so I hope I can get out soon. I'm off work for a few days so I won't even be heading to the fitness center there to use the treadmill! I have the Wii Fit(first generation) so I'm going to check that out since everyone is talking about it and I haven't tried it for a while.
My heels are killing me today, and yesterday too. I'm now wearing my running shoes in the house for support. We have gradually been increasing miles but I didn't expect this! I have great shoes, Asics Nimbus II, that I bought in October. Could they be wearing down? (I hope not, they were $125!) Have any of you veteran runners had this experience? Should I look for those gel heel cups? Would they help? I wish I had a book to refer to - does anyone have a book to recommend that they go to with questions like this?
Full of questions today! Thanks everyone!

You are full of questions today, Barb! :lmao: I'm not sure about your heels. It may be the shoes are not the right type for your foot, or you could be putting too much strain on them too quickly, or it could be heel spurs, it could even just mean you need to stretch your legs more after you exercise. If I were you, I would start with inserts for my running shoes.

I have bone spurs in both heels and I found that wearing heels actually helped. I was wearing tennies all day and so my heels were supporting me all day. But when I got a job that required me to wear high heels all day, some of the pressure went to the ball of my foot and off my heels, and I haven't had any problems since then.

Not sure if this applies to you, but you might do some research online to see what it could be.

Let us know what happens.

Hey everyone! Just when I was making a little headway on the swimming and running, I've got myself a cold! I am so bummed! I know "this too shall pass" as my mom would say, but the timing couldn't be worse. I'm feeling very anxious about being ready for the tri in May especially with my swimming.

I step away for a few days and there are pages to catch up on. I love it!

I hope everyone that is getting hit by the snow is doing OK. Enjoy your days off of work, and don’t hurt yourself with the snow removal. That is no fun.

Jen: congrats on the 5K! That is a great time too. You are awesome. Hope you have fun doing the virtual 5K. I know I am slow on advice, but I think 4 or 5 days of running is all I do. I enjoy a rest day, and I am still working on ways to get cross training in.

Tiffany: Personal coach, that sounds pretty good.

Katie: 10 miles in the morning?!?! Very impressive. I have to wait for a weekend to do something like that.

Barb: Lots of snow! Hope you are surviving this new storm too. Crazy weather.

Gretchen: Glad you missed the snow. Good job on the 7 miles, and on the treadmill. Way to go!

Welcome deleckidesign. Sorry for the hard year last year, but glad you were able to find something positive. I am a CPA like your DH. It has been a really tough time for the industry. Hopefully he finds something soon. Good luck on your training for the half. Should be fun!

Andrea: Thanks for the encouragement for everyone.

AFM: I have been trying to take it easy this week to make sure I don’t hurt myself before my half marathon on Sunday. So I have put a couple miles a day in on the treadmill to keep in my legs going, but I am trying hard to not hurt my knees. I will pack Thursday night and then we will head out right after work on Friday. 6 hours of driving Friday, another 4 on Saturday, the race on Sunday and then 11 hours home on Monday (with hopefully some stops to stretch my legs or I will be so sore on Tuesday!)

Tiffany, you have plenty of time to get ready. Take this opportunity to rest a bit and enjoy some other things you may have put in the back burner recently. Better not to overdo and make yourself sicker. Hope you feel better soon.

We really seem to be on a roll, I love it, too!

Manda, good luck on that half! Don't forget to come back and tell us all about it.

Manda, Good luck on your half.

Well, we missed the first storm but are getting walloped with this one today.
It has been snowing since last night and it seems to be increasing as today goes on. Had to go out and prop up some of our trees and bushes from the heavy snowfall so far.
I did do my 4m on the TM already so that is good.
Will be happy to sit by the fireplace later and enjoy some rest.

Hello team,
I have an announcement to make:

For you guys who live south of me, I can rent my snowblower for a cheap price because it has been used only 2 or 3 times this winter :lmao:
No seriously, you can send us a couple of inches if you want, we are ready. As for me, training is going well even if I don't to a lot of distances yet.
I have received my photos from the half-marathon at WDW in January and they look pretty nice. I so want to do that races again and most likely it will be in 2012. And i also have received a new pair of runnibg shoes that I will try Friday.

Have a nice evening
Diane

I guess everyone is stuck in snow today. Not much to report today since it was a day off in my program.
It is minus day one before the Olympics and I must say that they talk a lot about it in the news. A lot of pressure on our Canadian athletes to win gold medals: and a lot is expected from our hockey team. Being a hockey fan, I think the competition will be tough but a lot of matches will be great. Well time to go walk the dog before she destroys the room. have a nice evening.
Go Canada Go :cheer2:

How are you feeling? Is your cold any better? I hope that it is passing and you are feeling good again soon! I am so impressed that you are going to do a tri! Will this be your first one?

Thanks for the encouragement. I keep going from feeling positive about what I am doing to feeling frustrated with how slow I am. I want to feel positive about how far I have come and that I am actually out there doing it but I think I feel a bit anxious because I am actually registering for runs and don't want to embarrass myself.

Good luck at your half marathon! I hope you come back and share all about your run when you return.

How is all the snow? I feel bad for everyone who got so much of it...we have tons here and I am so sick of it all. I want to be off the TM and back outside - I run so much better on the road.

I love that you are willing to rent out your snowblower! So funny! :lmao:

You should post your photos! I would love to see them!!! I love to see all the photos and hear the stories about people who successfully completed the half marathon...I have to learn everything I can before I try it next March!

Diane

We will be watching a bunch of the Olympics on TV...especially the hockey! Hockey is huge in Minnesota and my DH and I love to watch it! We try to go to the Minnesota Wild and the Minnesota Gophers (our college team) games as often as possible!

AFM - Just finished 3.28 mi on the TM. My time was not all that great... 13'37" /mile. I think that I run slower on the TM and I am not really sure why. I have read that some people find it easier to run on a TM but I feel just the opposite. I love being outside when I run and need to figure out how to adjust some things on my schedule so that I can run outside a bit more.

I am excited and a bit anxious to run the Virtual 5K on Valentine's Day this weekend. I don't even know why because no one will really be watching me run...I think it is just because for me, I feel like this really commits me to running. Silly I know. To top it off, I just told some friends that I will run a 7K with the group of them on St. Patrick's Day weekend...it is run that rewards you with a huge glass of beer at the end! Despite how fun it will be, this one terrifies me because there WILL BE people watching me. I have NEVER done a real race before...what if I do something stupid? :scared1: I am already worrying about what I will wear (should I buy new clothes, what if I get too hot, what if I get too cold, what if I were something that makes me look fat - yes, this is a stupid one but these are the foolish things that go through my mind). I also worry about what do I need to bring for a 7K race (do I need a water, what if my nose runs - will I remember Kleenex, are there secret things runners always have with them that I don't know about?

Alright, enough about all of that because I am sure you all think I am totally nuts at this point! :rotfl2: Seriously though, anything any experienced runner here wants to share...I will take notes! :goodvibes

Have a great night everyone!
Jen

Can I just say that I am thrilled to be a part of this amazing group. I have had a rough couple of weeks trying to 'get back into the running thing".

After hurting my knee at the WDW Marathon, I have been a little tentative about just getting back out there and doing it again. I had never had any issues until I hit the 18 miles mark near the end of training, and I know now it was because I did not work up my miles properly.

But getting the chance to ready everyone's updates and posts during a crazy week at work got my blood flowing again. Tomorrow is my day off and I think a lovely 55 degree sun filled Vegas day calls for a nice easy 5k run.

This sunday is the planned start for the training for my this years first half marathon that I am planning for the middle of May. My goal is to also lose a pound every week or two, that way I will be back to the same weight I was last september when I ran my first half at Disneyland. Slow and steady is the name of the game, and soon I will hopefully also see the 180's for the first time since College. WOO HOO!

Sorry I wrote so much. You guys are an inspiration and to the existing team members, thank you for welcoming all of us into your circle.

-Pat

Jen, try to relax and just take it one run at a time. I started doing the C25K about 2 years ago. It took me about a year of starting and stopping before I finally found a great running partner that helped motivate me to stick with it. We registered for our first 5K, the Race for the Cure in DC last June. She was so excited and I was so nervous. I wanted to prove to myself that I could run the entire 5K without walking and was so scared. I made it, but I was so slow. But guess what? No one noticed, no one laughed. I wasn't first and I was far from last. The 5K was so much fun! I couldn't wait to sign up for another one. It's funny, I haven't ran an entire 3 miles since. After that race I started doing run/walk intervals based on Galloway's plan. It's much easier for me to commit too. I did my 2nd 5K in September, my running partner had moved and I had really slacked off on my training, but did it anyway. Ran and walked and just enjoyed it. I feel so proud to be among the elite group of "runners". I hope I never stop. I am now registered for a 5K in April and the Expedition Everest Challenge at Disney in June. I am just coming up on a year of being a "runner" so I don't know if I'm really qualified to offer advice, but someone on the DIS shared a quote with me that really helped with my first race and I referred back to it often.

DLF>DNF>DNS=Dead Last Finish is better than Did Not Finish which greatly trumps Did Not Start (I hope I quoted it correctly) You started which is more than many can say.
