Really???

Good, I'm glad I live in this state. Whether or not I think paddling or spanking is OK, I think it's a thing that should be determined by a parent, not a teacher or principal.

We live in a state where it's legal but I have never heard of an incident of paddling.

Here's the list separated by Legal and Illegal. I see a trend, and I'm not surprised.

What trend do you see?

You will all love this. Once every few weeks we have what my boss calls a "T" party. He calls out a list of kids who have had 3 or more tardies, lines them up, and paddles them one at a time.

BTW, I'm a high school teacher.

I've seen bad porn that starts that way...

Grown men paddling teenagers doesn't sound right in any way, shape, or form. It all gets a big ol what the heck from me.

Well, I used to live in Ohio. My brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews, cousins, and my own children have all went to Ohio schools. It may be legal, but you wouldn't know it. Have never ever heard of a child being paddled since I was in grade school, and that was in the early 70's.

Paddling is legal here, and my boss is quite fond of it. But parents have to sign to allow it. A form is sent home every year. Teachers are allowed to paddle as well. In 13 years of teaching, I have never even owned a paddle. I have been called in to witness a few times. It isn't my choice of punishment, but it is very common. I wouldn't be upset if it was outlawed, though.

Any child who is on the no paddle list is suspended. Most kids will just take the paddling and go back to class.

The part I bolded is true here too. A form for that is included with registration forms and must be returned each year. You can choose: the school has permission to administer corporal punishment or the school does NOT have permission. Either way, you HAVE to return the form as part of the registration packet, so no kid is paddled without the parents' permission.

I do think high school is too old for corporal punishment, even for those parents who believe in spanking.

And...back when I was in high school (1980's) they would BROADCAST the paddlings over the intercom! :scared1: We always felt sorry for the kid, not just because he was being paddled, but because everyone KNEW. My guess is, it's not still done that way. One would hope, anyway. :sad2:

ETA - I'm wondering if the people in "legal" states who have never seen it, maybe it's because all the parents are returning the forms denying permission?

Can someone post a picture of the dress? I can't get the video to work on my computer.

The whole thing is very strange. But I certainly wouldn't want my child to be paddled by anyone.

One thing you might want to think about is just because it is legal in a particular state does not mean the school systems have to use it. I have taught in NC( no longer legal) and GA when it was legal to paddle, but neither of the school systems I worked for allowed corporal punishment.

My guess is that the trend follows party lines, which would be political, and would turn this thread into something it doesn't need to be.

That was my guess as well. Just wanted to see if once the gauntlet was thrown, the thrower would own up to the post or run and hide.

Disgusting, isn't it? I love what we teach our kids.
That there are rules, and consequences for not following the rules, and that the consequences ARE enforced? While you may not agree with the specific consequences, how can anyone reasonably DISagree with the lesson?

First, I think her dress is beautiful.

Paddling an 18 year old female is unacceptable. Would you let your boss paddle you for breaking dress code? No, you wouldn't. There comes a point where you have use age appropriate punishment, and spanking an adult is not age appropriate. It has a sexual connotation. If a grown man hit his wife with a piece of wood when she "disobeyed" his rules, he could be arrested for domestic violence. There is no reason for one adult to hit another adult with a piece of wood. This should never have been an issue.

I DISagree because in my opinion the punishment is outrageous. The idea that young women can be paddled as punishment seems wrong on many levels and I would be happy to stand up for my daughter if she chose not to allow herself to be humiliated and denigrated in what could feel like a sexual manner. I would also question whether a clothing violation should cause my daughter to lose three days of her education.

It is a beautiful dress. BUT IT DIDN"T MEET THE GUIDELINES SET BY THE SCHOOL!! They have the right to set those guidelines, and enforce them.

The question to me is Why does the school feel the need to discipline the kids further than missing the prom. I don't see that need at all.

A high school senior in Alabama was suspended for wearing to skimpy a Prom dress. The punishment was either being suspended or be paddled. Is that even allowed anymore?

Yes. The dress seemed fine to me, but she knew the dress code beforehand, so she knew she was taking a risk. They did give her a choice and she chose suspension over paddling.

Can you tell me what the guidelines she broke were?

If the dress broke the guidelines why was she allowed in?

Are these 'guidelines' consistently enforced at the school?

The dress was short but not mini-skirt short. Showed a little clevage but that was more because of her size up there... not because it was cut real low. It was a formal dress.
