Really???

I admit I don't believe paddling belongs in school, but I didn't attend any schools that did this so I don't have any frame of reference.

I do have some questions for those that think this is ok - or attended a school that did this.

What exactly does a "paddling" ususally consist of?
Is it a swat, a series of swats based on the offense, does it make the students cry, or leave a mark?
Is this only used in high school or also in elementary schools?
Do you paddle your own children if they misbehave?

Ridiculous! There is absolutely no way someone else is going to tell me to strike my child and then stand there and watch it.
I'm not sure what's sicker...the school doing it themselves or ordering a parent to do it while they watch.

You know what? I was never paddled in school, either, and I behaved very well.
Ditto for me and my kids. My youngest is 17...I have NEVER been contacted by my kids' schools about a problem with my children, nor did my parents about me.
Spanking, as a fetish, is huge. Spanking a teenager could absolutely be seen as sexual. As wrong as it is to do to little kids, it's even more wrong to do to teens.
Exactly. It has nothing to do with OUR minds in the gutter. It's Mr Principal getting his jollies by lining kids up for "paddle parties". ICK!

Corporal punishment is assualt? Give me a break:laughing:
:thumbsup2

I've seen dresses a lot worse than that, but the school had a dress code policy and she didn't follow it. If her mother didn't know about such a policy, as she stated, then perhaps her daughter should have shared that. I didn't know doesn't make you exempt.

As far as the paddling, there was a reality show on a few years ago called The Principal's Office and they were in a school where the principal told some kids that they could be paddled or have Saturday detention. One of the boys took the paddle because he said he had a job on the weekends and the paddling was quick and then it was over. They at least had a choice.

I live in one of the states where it's illegal, but I'll tell you, with the lack of discipline many kids have, perhaps a few paddles would make them get it together.
:thumbsup2

If the girl didn't stay within dress code she should have been sent home. If she was, then that was enough of a punishment and it should have ended there.

But, some of these responses! Good grief, get your minds out of the gutter!

We were paddled in school. We were paddled in high school. There was nothing sexual what so ever about it. In fact the principal usually called in a female teacher for the girls. But you know what? We behaved! We had the utmost respect for our principal and we didn't mouth off at him or the teachers. We did the usual hs pranks and such and we had fun--within reason and not at someone else's expense. If the principal warned us, we knew what was next and we heeded by that warning. We WERE NOT AFRAID of the man. Most students had a great relationship with the man and some of the kids, that didn't have parents they could go to, would go to him when they had problems they needed to talk about. We had the utmost respect for his authority.

Paddling is still practiced in dd's school but only when all other options have been exhausted. A reward system is used first and foremost. If a student is to be suspended the parents are sometimes given the option of their child being paddled.

:thumbsup2

I live where it's illegal. But I wouldn't mind one bit if they brought it back. Children need to learn respect, and by the state of things today, obviously what is being used now is NOT working. When we would get our knuckles rapped, or soap in our mouths, or heaven forbid, a paddling...children behaved in school. They had a healthy respect of teachers and administration, and fear of misbehaving. Hell yeah I would want my kid to get in trouble if he is mouthing off. He knows that if he doesn't behave, a swat to his behind is in order. He is an angel in school, though, apparently, so it wouldn't apply. But at home with his nanny, she knows I would have no issue with her taking him over her knee. Or giving him sassy juice (vinegar) or whatever.

My kids will NOT grow up without fear and respect of those in charge.

In the schools I attended, a school paddling was usually 3-5 (fully-clothed) one-handed strikes on the rear end with a wooden board. The hardwood board is normally two feet long, 6 inches wide, and about 3/4 inch thick; very like a cricket bat. In my day, the colloquial term was "licks" -- as in you got 3 licks for being truant, but 5 for vandalizing school property. Normally the kid being paddled is expected to hold onto the back of a chair -- more to prevent injury than anything else, because the natural tendency is to try to cover your butt with your hands, and that paddle striking your hand could do some damage.

Most of the people that I have known who paddle in the home will paddle the child either bare-bottomed or in their underpants, but I've never heard of disrobing of any kind being required for a paddling given in a public school.

Wow, I am thoroughly disgusted.

Oh, and if this doesn't turn the rest of you off to the state of Mississippi, go watch A Prom Night in Mississippi. Great material there....racism and segregation are acceptable there, too!

I said I was through, but this pissed me off enough to come back. No, it is not "acceptable". Because things happen in isolated areas does not make it the norm. Prejudice is horrible. Even if it is against a region of the country. In case you wondered, we have running water and wear shoes. But if you'd rather believe it otherwise, carry on with your ignorance. :headache:

Are you saying racially segregated proms are not deemed acceptable in your state?

I brought this up only because some things are simply morally reprehensible, whether one has a "frame of reference" or not.

Some people are bigoted enough to believe that all people in the South are the same and have the same beliefs.

My first husband's mother used to say that when anyone was born north of the Mason Dixon line, the doctor was waiting to hit them with the ugly stick. So, I guess if I was moronic and allowed her ideas of what people looked like up north to influence me, I'd say they were all ugly. That would make me ignorant because I wasn't thinking for myself. It's sad but true that there are bigots and prejudice everywhere whether it's racially or regionally based.

Schools do NOT have segregated proms in my state. Many schools will not have any school dances, and parents put on the proms. And yes, sometimes those proms are done separately, but it has NOTHING to do with the school. There are no segregated school sponsored events. AT ALL. Locally, there is only one school district that holds a prom. I taught there for 7 years. There is no segregation. Everyone (black, white, and Hispanic) goes and has a ball! And no one cares who your date is-even though one school in MS was on the news about not allowing a lesbian couple recently. Again, just because it happens in some situations does not mean you can label the whole state!

You can find nastiness and bigotry in any state or community. That does not mean you can generalize about the state or community as a whole.

Exactly! There are close minded, intolerant people in every part of the country, and on both sides of the leadership of this country.

I'm still trying to figure out how someone asking about paddling in another state, and me replying with how it works here, turning into MS being the devil!

B/c so people are hell bent on their morals that they feel it is okay to condemn someone explaining something while failing to realize that it doesn't always mean endorsement of said practice.

Here's an article with my disclaimer that linking said article is not an endorsement of that paddling.

http://www.corpun.com/counuss.htm
The US Supreme Court decided in 1977 that spanking or paddling by schools is lawful where it has not been explicitly outlawed by local authorities. It is true that the incidence of CP has declined sharply in recent years, but only 30 states (plus D.C. and Puerto Rico) have actually abolished it, either de facto or de jure. CP is still used in the other 20 states, and it remains a fairly common practice in three of them, all in the South: Alabama, Arkansas and Mississippi.

Spanking as a fetish is a totally different conversation. It CAN be seen that way, but that doesn't mean it should. I think its just evil to assume that there is something wrong with someone who paddles a student, especially when it is part of the school policy.

And I wasn't talking about one person behaving and having respect, I was talking about the entire school.

:thumbsup2 I am in southern Mississippi and there are no segregated dances, proms or anything else and hasn't been in many, many years.

It is ridiculous that someone can pull one thing out of the news and start downing a whole state. Talk about prejudice and ignorance!!
