Really???

Are they out of their minds? First the dress isn't that revealing. I'd have to see the other kids to judge but she looked like a lady to me.

It's the hitting that has got me in a twist. Parents allow people to lay their hands on kids and then get surprised when things go too far? I would have an absolute fit if anyone ever dared touch my kids. I don't touch my kids. I would drag everyone personally into civil court and watch them lose everything they had trying to fight me. I am not kidding.

So, don't let her attend the prom, and don't give her money back. Did they let her attend and then punish her? If she wasn't allowed into the function, then how was she breaking any rules.

Stupid move to suspend or paddle. Over the top reaction.

She had a choice. Paddling was not forced on her. She took the 3 day suspension instead. I do not think the dress was a big deal but the school did have a dress code for the prom and this girl, along with 17 other students, decided to ignore it.

While I don't agree with the punishments offered, there was a dress code and having seen the dress it would break that dress code. A better solution would have been to send her home and leaving it at that or maybe an afterschool detention. I don't think paddling or a suspension is necessarily the right punishment.

Corporal punishment is legal in many states. I was very surprised when I looked it up. My dgd got in trouble at school and my dss was told he had to come to school and paddle her in front of the principal. This was last year in Tenn.

Did they let her into the dance? If not, I don't know how they can punish her and if the DID let her in- I dont' see how they could punish her (they let her in).

The whole thing is insane. If they show up in violation of the dress code, the school administrators should just turn them away...make them change, get a sweater, or whatever.

At our kids' schools, dress code violators get charming clothes from the lost and found to wear.

Is this a public school or private school?

I had no idea corporal punishment was still being practiced anywhere! With how quick people are to sure nowadays, I can't imagine any school system laying hands on any student even if the student decides to pick paddling as a punishment.

I didn't think the dress was too skimpy, but if it violated the established dress code then it violated the code. The appropriate punishment would be to not let inapporpriately dressed students into the prom.

From the news clip, I have actually seen more revealing prom dresses years ago.
As for the paddling-yes they are too big as seniors now.
As for the 3 day suspension-that was stupid as well, just turn her away from the prom.

Paddling when I was younger were in the schools, but I didn't get paddled because I was more afraid of what my DF's reaction would be.

I would rather have a kid paddled, even in front of his peers then to let him run loose in a school and act a fool to where kids have to be locked in their rooms and wait for the police to be called. Oh this had kid had no weapon, but DD's school was a no paddle school.

I don't understand why they just didn't tell her she couldn't attend the prom. That's what would happen at our schools. No other punishment just the fact that they wouldn't be allowed to attend the prom. :confused3

I think the very idea that an adult can assault a child who is not their own is beyond belief. We've had teachers arrested for all sorts of unthinkable things around here, not just here but everywhere Giving something like this a nod is just unconscionable and should be banned.

While I don't agree with the punishments either there is a dress code. I don't get why kids can break the rules and parents back them. The fact that they didn't think there was cleavage is absurd!!! There was a ton of cleavage and the dress was definitely too short by the dress code standards. If you watched the movie and saw her walking down the stairs there was no way she could have bent over without showing her behind. Rules are rules, follow them and you don't get "disciplined". Simple.

I agree, the dress probably didn't follow their dress code. I don't understand why she wasn't just sent home. It's the paddling option I couldn't believe.

I wonder how many swats this infraction warranted? Does the amount of swats vary with the severity of the different offenses? Can anyone, where corporal punishment is legal tell us how it works?

Any teachers on this board care to weigh in?

I am unclear - was she denied access to the prom? What about the other 17 in violation? Did they get in or get turned away?
I don't see where they had the right to throw any other type of punishment at them.

Corporal punishment is assualt? Give me a break:laughing:

While I don't agree with corparal punishment in schools, I don't have a problem with them enforcing the dress code.
