Really unhappy with dolphin pool condition

Um, my kids and I swam in that pool last Friday (8/24).

It was gross, and it was my first time staying at the Swan. I just assumed they did not keep their pools as nice as Disney resorts do.

What kind of sickness could we have picked up from swimming in there? How long would symptoms take to show up? Can I assume we are fine since it's been a week?

I am just beyond grossed out about this now. That pool was reason enough for me to say I would never stay there again.

Lots of lovely stuff. Conjunctivitis(pink eye), strep...all kinds of good stuff. Usually after 2 weeks, you should be fine.

While I am the Dolphin rectified the situation, it is scary to me that they let others swim in that pool when it was in that condition. Did they not know about it until you complained? Shouldn't the lifeguards know what disgusting looks like? Do they just not care? I don't know. The pictures you posted are downright gross and the fact they let others swim in Ot until YoU comPlaines scares me!!!!

It's nice that the OP got wristbands for SAB but what about the rest of the hotel guests? They should have done something sooner.

Op here. As I'm writing this now poolside at storm along bay. Jason really did as he offered for my family and set us all up with wristbands for the rest of our trip. My kids are very happy!

The hotel has shocked and brushed- cleaned the pool overnight and today. Whats happening now is that the water looks even worse than before as all the algae and gunk that had settled is now in the water waiting for the filters to suck it up. My husband took a walk through the pool area around 2 pm and lots of manager types are out poolside trying to field concerns and complaints from guests bc now it looks even worse.... But this is how it works it gets worse before it gets better and at least they are trying..

As far as when the grotto pool will be shut for drainage and maintenance, and for how long , there's a different answer from everyone you ask. Our main source who is the head of recreation- Jason- has said immediately following labor day for approx 25-30 days.... But ask a front desk employee and they'll tell you the pool isn't
Closing.... I guess everyone will know once it happens....

Anyway like I said before the hotel really came through for us and we have shown our appreciation for what Jason did for our family. What they are doing for others or what they are going to do we have no idea.....

I'm not familiar with S/D but my question is where will the guests of the hotel be allowed to swim when the pool is being refurbished? Wouldn't it make sense to just close the pool down and start the refurb sooner? And even if they didn't actually start the refurb sooner at least they wouldn't be obligated to send guests to Storm along bay. I would be very upset if I paid more money to stay at the BC or YC and guests from S/D were allowed in.

I imagine that with the slow season upon us, you would have fewer guests joining you at SAB than you would if you were visiting mid July...even with the S/D guests added into the mix. So, you pay off-season prices and have a pool that's less crowded. I doubt anyone will complain - as I can't see the pool "looking" overly crowded. If you were staying at BC and SAB had ann issue, I'm sure you'd appreciate the same courtesy being extended to you. They do this when BW is refurbing the pool too....

Is anyone able to clarify, are ALL the guests from Swan and Dolphin going to be given SAB wristbands until the issue is cleaned up--or was this just a special thing for the OP as she was so pro-active in bringin the matter to attention of management?

I have to say, as someone who has reservations at YC during the 25-30 day time period, it upsets me to think of the potential (likely) over crowding of SAB. I'm paying a lot of money to stay at YC, and if all S/D guests are getting the wrist bands, I'd be able to save about 2/3 of my hotel costs by canceling my YC reservation and booking a room at S/D instead...

I think you did a very good thing, public safety health wise. I'm pretty certain you've spent a good bit of your vacation time trying to get this situation on the road to being corrected. I do wonder what S/D will provide for their guests during the closedown.

Totally agree and that was my point.

I hear what you are saying, but this is kind of an apples and oranges situation.
The courtesy extended between Disney resorts is understandable, they are all Disney-owned resorts. The tricky thing in this is that S/D aren't owned by Disney, they are privately owned.

Even DVC guests aren't allowed to pool hop to SAB. SAB is very busy, most of the year with BC/YC guests.

I trust S/D will come up with something reasonable for it's guests. I am really, really glad that Tuckerkeys pointed out the problem. It's a public safety issue, and certainly needed prompt attention.

Are some of you upset that the OP and the family are using the SB pool?

Kudos to the OP for taking the initiative of trying to get the problem solved. :)

Am I the one reading this that probably bets Jason would rather his real name not have have been used here?

If I were Jason, I'd be cringing.

I probably would not be but it is a valid concern. Part of the cost of resorts goes to the amenitites associated with that resort. Now whether it seems kinda of elitist or not, one of the biggest draws for the BC/YC resort is the pool. Guest pay for that upgraded pool.

It's the same complaint folks who stay at Wilderness lodge have when every one from FT. Wilderness invades the pool.

look at it this way, one of the perks for staying on site is free dining and EMH, sure there are other factors like immersion that go along with it but if suddenly disney said you know what, everyone can take advantage of emh then some can wonder, why the heck am I paying all that money.

Or let's say you like the "total immersion" aspect of staying onsite. How would you feel if dsney allowed their good neighbor hotels to offer the same immersion for 1/3 the cost?

Some folks think that's why disney stopped offering saratoga springs as an upgrade. I don't know this to be true but rumor had it that dvc members who paid hefty prices got a little put out from folks paying value resort prices getting the same amenitites that they just kick out 1000's of dollars for.

this hopefully was a one time boo-boo by dolphin because even going to SAB can be a hassle from the dolphin

DISCLAIMER: I am just offering up a possible explanation, I am in no way suggesting that op should not have been allowed to use the pool. sorry but the dis is famous for taking an posted and twisting it beyond recognition. lol.

I agree the OP did a great job! :thumbsup2

I don't necessarily have a problem with her family using SAB--but I just don't really understand it. S/D is a totally separate, non-disney owned resort. S/D is responsible for the condition/maintenance of the pools on their property. If the OP (and any other guests of S/D) need to compensated for the condition of the feature pool, it should be done by S/D--maybe refunding what they paid for the rooms, complimentary meals at the resort restuarants, tickets to waterparks, etc. By offering wristbands to SAB--it is not S/D that is compensating the S/D resort guests--that compensation is being given at the expense of those paying to stay at BC or YC.

Again, I am curious if SAB wrist bands are only being given to the OP and her party (which really isn't that big a deal, to me--as a guest who will be staying at YC within the next 25 days...), or is this something that will be standard for all S/D guests until the feature pool at S/D is fixed (which WOULD be a big deal to me)?
