I have saved all my memory cards (full) even though I downloaded all the photos to my computer.

Recently our hard drive crashed and our photos went bye bye.

Here's my stupid question - if I put the old memory cards into my current camera - can I download them again?

TIA!

If you never deleted the photos from those memory cards, photos should all still be there.

Yeah if they have never been deleted they should still all be there. One caution that I would add is that if you are putting it into a different camera from when they were taken, you would be better off to use SD slot on your computer or buy a card reader. This would reduce the chance of any formatting issues or camera specific download software issues.

And if you haven't already done so, buy an external hard drive as well as some sort of off site back up. I have 2 external 1TB hard drives in my home and a stack of DVDs in a cabinet at work, all with the same photos on them. My next step is to get a portable external HD that I can transfer back and forth every so often instead of using DVDs.

Reformatting was what I was afraid of. Some of the cards were used in a different camera. I don't have an SD slot but will look into getting a card reader.

And yes - the first thing we did was buy an external hard drive and have learned a painful lesson about the importance of backing up files.

Thanks!!

You can find a card reader pretty cheap, I don't have a clue where the USBs for any of my cameras are, it is so much easier just doing it that way. I also have a stack of cards with the same pictures that are on my computer, for some reason I tend to misplace CDs but I always know where my cards are.

Found one with good reviews on Amazon and it's on its way!

Love the DIS!!!!

After reading this post,I think I know what happened to my card. Now,I fear that all my photos are lost!! I brought it to CVS and they got the same "error" message I get at home. Anyone know how I can get my photos off my SD memory card? Thanks

There are programs available to recover files from a corrupt card. I had to use the Sony one a couple of times, and it worked well. Do a google search for SD recovery software and you will find a ton of options. Fortunately I have yet to need one since switching from Sony, so maybe someone else can give you some specific recommendations.

first and foremost do not format the card,

I have several recovery programs.

ZAR is a pretty good free program, when you go to the website it will look like you need to buy the program, but you don't.. you can download the free trial and use it to recover photo files, other types of files do require purchasing the software,

the other program I have is "recover my photos"....

I recently recovered photos for a co-worker, it was a strange situation,

her pc at home said the card needed formatted, I put it in my PC at work and got the same message.

I just happened to have my laptop at work so I tried the card there and my laptop would recognize it, unfortunately for some odd reason I had never installed the license key for my recovery program, so I couldn't save the files.

I took the card home, popped it in my PC, again got the message to format the card, put it in my laptop and it was recognized.

so I installed the license key, recovered the photos and put them on a dvd for her.

so if you have access to another PC, you might want to give it a try
