My husband and I are really interested in DVC and he met with a rep in January during our trip to WDW. The DVC rep told him that the DIS is the place to get the best information...so I have a question for you all!

Is there a way to rent points before joining to see if it is really will be a good investment for our family? And what is the going rate for rented points? If this is a touchy subject, I apologize...I just don't know how it works. TIA! :goodvibes

Just so you realize, DVC is not considered an investment (i.e., savings) plan. It's a prepaid vacation program (timeshare) that results in you spending a lot more money at WDW that you ever imagined you would. We really need to do a direct deposit to Disney every payday to pay for these vacations. We already do it once a month for maintenance fees.

If you haven't already, visit the DVC Rent/Trade Forum and read all of the "Sticky" threads at the top of the page.

Figure out the number of points you will need for your rented stay - you can use the DVC Point Charts for that. A link is at the very top of the Rent/Trade Forum.

Points will rent for anywhere between $ 8 - $14. The lower end is usually "distressed" points that expire soon or have other restrictions on them. The higher end is often charged to make reservations at the 11 month window for very popular times. Expect to pay $10 -$11 on the average. Points are of no value to a non-member - you will actually be renting a reervation.

Read a few of the posts on the Rent/Trade Forum to get a feel for how people post their wants / offers. When you are ready, you can either post your "want ad"or respond to someone who has posted that they have points to rent.

Terms are completely negotiable between you and the owner. Disney will not get involved if a dispute arises. It's a good idea to have a written understanding of the terms so that there are no surprises.

Be sure to ask about the owner's cancellation policy - it varies among owners. Most consider renting to be a non-refundable transaction. Some will allow you to reschedule your vacation, depending on the status of the points used to make the reservation.

Ask how you can confirm that a reservation actually exists. Ask about housekeeping - DVC members do not get daily housekeeping.

Renters are allowed to add the Dining Plan and use Magical Express if they so choose. If those interest you, ask the owner how to arrange it for your reservation.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask them here.

Best wishes -

Just beware--
There are many people here who rented points initially to "try out" DVC, and that was that! 250 points later, I cruise the resale boards and the Dis for my fix.(Don't say we didn't warn you... ;) )
