We really want our 18 month old daughter to get her first hair cut at the barber shop on main street next week. I have read that you need to be at the barber shop right when it opens, b/c it fills up quickly. That day is a non-EMH day at MK, so theoretically the park opens at 9. But I was reading in the Unofficial Guide that many times they will let you in up to an HOUR early, even parks that don't have an early opening. Is this true? If they let you in to the main st. area early, is the barbershop open at that time? Should we try to get to the front of MK at 8 am? If it's not really true, I don't want to drag an 18 month old and a 4 yr old there to wait around for an hour! That wouldn't be fun for anyone involved!

Also, I have heard that the barbershop moved -- is it now near the firehouse (on the left as you go in?)

Thanks!

9 has meant 9 whenever I have been there. They start to let you through Main Street a few minutes early to get to the rope drop areas but that's it.

We were able to get in before park opening when we had a breakfast reservation at Crystal Palace at 8:30, but only those with reservations wre able to get in before 9:00.

We also went to the barbershop and had a great time (not on the same day). We got there right at park opening and waited about 15 minutes- there was one family ahead of us. This was January of this year, so not at a busy time, but DH went back later during the week for a haircut during the parade and there was no wait at all.

We had our daughter's first haircut at the MK (along with her 2nd and 4th haircut). It wans't too bad of a wait the first 2 times. When we were there just this past week, we went there 3 times before we were able to get it cut. Both times there were people getting their hari cut and it was an extremely long wait. But, the tird time we walk right in and got it cut. Sometimes it's empty and other times, everyone has the same idea.

They keep them occupied with stickers all over them and they do a wonderful job! I was really pleased with the job they did each and every time.

Make sure they know it is her first haircut, but they generally ask. You get a really cute certificate, a Mickey ears hat that says " first haircut" and of course they put aside the curls for you in a tissue for you to take home.

I told DH that unfortuately they do a great job, I hate having to take her any place else for her haircuts.

Good luck and take lots of pictures!

Glad to see someone else was thinking of taking their daughter. Although I wonder if that's just more for me and it will really be insignificant later. But she has this one long chunk of hair that's like 2" longer than the rest and I thought I take her to finally get that lock cut. I think being on the dis has started to soften my brain!!! I just thought it'd be a really neat thing to pass on. she can take her kids there for their first cuts too. anyway. Good luck I hope you get in lickity split!

just curious...when you went and there was a long line, what time of day was it? part of me wants to do this right at rope drop, b/c I think we'd get through quicker, but I'm also concerned b/c then we won't be at Fantasyland at 9 am to get Dumbo and those kind of rides done with before the long lines form (not really for my 18 month old's sake, but b/c we also have a 4 yr old daughter!). my husband's solution is to have both girls get their hair cut!

Where exactlly is it located on Main Street?????????

It's in the corner on the left... look for the red and white striped barber shop pole. We arrived around 10 AM and waited a long time... but it was worth it!

We took our son there for his first haircut last year - he was 10mo - and had a bit of a wait. There was a family in line ahead of us with 4 people getting haircuts, plus the couple of people already in the chairs. We waited, though, because we didn't see the line getting any shorter. This was AFTER we had breakfast in CP. DS actually fell asleep while we waited and they started cutting his hair while he slept. (They said it's a common thing for them to do.)

DH had actually had his hair cut there before and we were pleased with it. But this I hated both DH's cut and DS's cut. DH's just wasn't cut enough. DS's on the other hand was horrible and I couldn't wait for it to grow out enough to get it fixed at home. The woman cut the front in a straight line, fine, but it was at an angle. And worst of all, she cut it beyond the hairline!!!! But I have some great pictures (probably about 200 - gotta love digital) AND video of the event. It's definitely a great memory for DH & me, I just wish the cut would have been better.

RRBB - several thoughts run through my head after your post....

1) YIKES! If they do such a bad job, do i really want my daughter's hair cut here? Aren't they professionals (i mean, don't you need to have a license to cut hair??)?

2) CUTE picture!!!

3) I can kinda see how she didn't get his hair straight -- poor little guy has his head all droopy, and I know how difficult it can be to "straighten up" a spaghetti-like sleeping child!

4) I guess I will get it done -- you only get one first haircut, after all, and what better place to have it than at Disney WOrld! Oh, and I'm only getting them to make bangs for her -- nothing major -- so hopefully it will grow out if she gets too wild or if the barber/stylist is too inept!

We went last month for Ds's first haircut and didn't have to wait long at all. We went around lunchtime and it was empty. They did a nice job and I was amazed he would sit and not scream. The stickers worked great. We did go on another day in the late afternoon just to get some sprinkles (tinkerbell dust) for my DD and had to wait a little while but not bad at all.

more CUTE CUTE pictures and I love the way they are laid out.

How much did it cost just to get some sprinkles? Maybe that's what we can do w/my older daughter, b/c when she sees her sister getting her hair cut and getting those mickey mouse ears, there's going to be some jealousy involved (never mind that she will have had herself done up at the BBB the day before!)

It's free! :teeth: Both my five year old DS and my DD (12) had it done and it was great.

We did make the mistake of having color added to my five year olds hair on the other day we went. It was bright red and he was like a deadly weapon walking through Disney as it didn't dry. We ended up making a trip back to the resort to wash it out and he spent weeks with pink hair.

Oh no, I hope I didn't scare you off of getting the first haircut there. I just wanted to warn you that it may not be the greatest cut. There's no replacing the memories, and remember a bad haircut will always grow out.

DH has had really good cuts there in the past, I just think it was the woman that did his and DS's that day. I wouldn't have minded so much if it was just cut at a funny angle, but she snipped so much off DS's head that it was beyond the hairline and took a couple months to grow out. We're planning to go back again in a few weeks, and I'm prepared with camera and patience in case they walk away with less than stellar cuts again. It's just fun to say they got their hair cut in MK.

Have fun in the barber shop - you may even run into other DISers there like we did.

My DD was 4 and she just had her hair styled- pulled up into two ponytails on top- with pixie dust and it was $4.95. It was really cute and lasted all day and she has baby fine hair.

For the poster who was afraid they wouldn't do a good job- we had a great experience! DS2 had a great haircut and the barber asked me throughout the cut if it was what we wanted. My DH went back later in the week and asked who could cut a good flat top and he was really happy with the results. One of the ladies had been a barber in the army!

The pixie dust sounds cute is it just sprinkles or color????!!!!!

The "sprinkles" are actually little mickey mouses of various metallic type colors, like metallic red, blue, silver etc. That may sound strange, but hopefully it makes sense.

We took DS there last April for his first haircut at 14 mos. We went a little after opening maybe 9:15??? and had no wait whatsoever. This was on a Monday AM. They told us if we had come the day b4 we would have had to basically wait forever (Sunday).

We had the best experience for a 1st haircut...lots of stickers, sprinkles, etc. And our DS is on the shy side.

We tried to go again this past trip in August, but both times we went during mid-day and there were probably 10-20 people waiting outside in line. When you figure there are only 2 stylists there (that I know of), that would take hours to get through, so we skipped it this time.

Good luck...it was magical for us and hope the same for you!

And yes, it is to your far left when you walk in...look for the barbershop pole!
