Real ID May 7, 2025 deadline, do you have one already, will you have one by next year or just use a passport?

Yeah I don't get it. I had a Real ID when I moved to Florida in 2011, and again when I came to Connecticut in 2014. I didn't have to do anything special, that's just the way they came?
What’s not to get, it’s state dependent, ours started offering real ID in 2019. NOW ITS $24 for a regular license, $35 for real ID, it’s a choice.

All states offer real ID now.

If you have a passport it's not needed but personally I don't see why someone wouldn't get it.

I have passport, passport card, real ID and Global entry.

I also worked for the government for many many years so they already know everything about me so it was never a big deal.

I know some get pretty paranoid though for whatever reason

To 'upgrade' you regular driver's license to the Real ID, there are various other document you have to show at the DMV. Each state has a website listing the other accepted documents for this purpose. If someone NEVER intends to fly, then they might choose to just keep renewing their current driver's license.

What type of passport doesn’t work for international travel?
They told us it's the one for Only Mexico and Canada. If you go international you must get the other one. I can't remember what it is called. We told them we would not be traveling overseas and they said this one would be appropriate for us. I hope this helps?!

I'm pretty sure the Passport Card is only good for Mexico and Canada. From Google's AI: 1724778223331.png

Just to be clear, that's a Passport Card and it only applies to land travel to Mexico and Canada. You still wouldn't be able to fly to either of those countries.

I’m not paranoid at all, but my regular license expires in 2025, and if I can just get a new one mailed to me, that’s what I’m doing. Even with an appointment I was there 3 hours the last time (which was much shorter than it used to be without an appointment).

Is that true? They never addressed how we would travel, but it makes sense. We could have done the Real ID, but they talked us into this one. Thanks.

I finally stopped procrastinating and got the new ID when I had to renew my driver's license. It wasn't too much of a hassle.

I have a passport but got the Real ID 2 years ago. It wasn't a big deal. I had all the info the website said and was in and out in 20 min.

The enhanced license works the same way as the passport card.

The next real ID appointment here is 10/9.

We can't even make an appointment -- just show up and get in line. When I took my daughter last week, we were in and out of the building in 30 minutes....7 minutes of that was waiting for the license to print (this was a pretty big DMV. The waiting area felt like we were in a small airport and there were 16 windows all staffed). When I went to a different (much smaller) DMV to get my real ID two years ago, it took me about the same amount of time. I didn't even realize that some places/states offer an appointment.

Because I can renew my non-compliant license online and skip a visit to the DMV. If I want a compliant license, then I have to go to the DMV. Since I already have a passport that I don't mind carrying around, why bother with Real ID?
