Real ID May 7, 2025 deadline, do you have one already, will you have one by next year or just use a passport?

I figured this would be a good thread to post now since many people in our country will be traveling by plane to major sporting events in our country starting next year and for the next decade.

I updated my driver's license during the last renewal and it was a fairly easy process to show the extra documents required.

That deadline has already been pushed back a number of times. I think the original problem was certain states weren't able to issue the new 'real ID'. I would suspect a flurry of activity closer to this latest deadline as the procrastinators will suddenly wake up and realize they need to do something. I would assume there will still be some clueless people who will arrive at the airport after whatever the deadline ends up being and 'surprised' by this requirement. I believe showing a passport is still an alternative to the real ID for flying. The govt building thing probably impacts fewer people since there are likely many who rarely/never go to such places.

I would assume there are a lot of people who don't have passports if they never travel outside the country.

We updated our licenses to Real ID several years ago -- I'm going to say I've renewed it at least twice since then so 8+ years. And we have passports.

I got a real id issued back in 2012.

Are there really still states that are not issuing compliant id or is it just a matter of people not having renewed since the state went compliant?

We are talking about a law passed in 2005.

Twenty years seems like a crazy long amount of time to implement.

If you arrive early enough and the TSA is able to prove your identity using alternate means, you are likely to still be able to fly even without a real id. Without any id at all.

Forgot Your ID?

In the event you arrive at the airport without valid identification, because it is lost or at home, you may still be allowed to fly. The TSA officer may ask you to complete an identity verification process which includes collecting information such as your name, current address, and other personal information to confirm your identity. If your identity is confirmed, you will be allowed to enter the screening checkpoint. You will be subject to additional screening, to include a patdown and screening of carry-on property.

You will not be allowed to enter the security checkpoint if your identity cannot be confirmed, you choose to not provide proper identification or you decline to cooperate with the identity verification process.

TSA recommends that you arrive at least two hours in advance of your flight time.

I’m in NJ and just had to go check my license because couldn’t remember if I had upgraded or not yet.

It reads: NOT FOR “REAL ID” PURPOSES

We do all have passports so I guess no hurry… for now.

I did get my upgraded a few years ago.....and have a passport that I just renewed last year.
DH just upgraded his when his expired earlier this year and will be renewing his passport when we get back from a cruise in September

I got a RealID when I moved, so 2017. Since then I've added a passport and a Global Entry card which are both compliant. I'm hoping that my Tribal ID will be accepted as RealID at some point. Says something that I can use it to get into Canada but not to get on a plane.

I’m thinking about getting a global card but it’s dependent on how much of an annoying process it is to travel internationally and how much traveling I expect to do. The actual domestic process was pretty simple surprisingly so. I’m also not big on giving the govt money unless I have to, lol.

I have a Real ID and a Passport. When my I had to renew my license last year, I went ahead and got the Real ID since it only cost a little bit more.

It’s only been available in NJ for 5 years, and starting before COVID the DMV’s were jacked up with several hours of waiting. After COVID more like 12 hours of waiting, and then it was impossible to get appointments.

I do not have real id, the last time I got my license renewed there were no appointments available. I have a passport and a passport card so I’m good.

Hi fellow NJ resident. It has seemed like it has taken a while for NJ to get it together. Both our licenses were due to expire within the next year .We decided to go ahead and get the Real ID. Thinking about traveling by air next Spring in the US. Don't want to be taking a passport
