Except that some states got on board with offering these only a few years ago.Just stop with the whole thing, if you haven't actually required it in the 10 years since it was passed, just give it up.
Our state you would just go off-renewal and pay the photo fee then your license would renew per usual. It was never going to be where everyone in the U.S. was going to get theirs during their renewal. Your logic isn't how the deadline works though. It's not related to people's expiration dates on their licenses which vary across all states and all different reasons. Some of my family don’t have one mainly because covid made it difficult to go to the dmv. For example my wife’s license expired she was planning on getting her real id but it was impossible to get an in person appointment.
If those who got a new license during covid and were unable to get real id it will be 5 years before they have to renew. I could see this being put off even longer than 2025.
You can still get a RealID compliant document, if you choose not to, then in my mind you are choosing not to fly. If we are going to make rules, enforce them, otherwise making them is pointless. Some of my family don’t have one mainly because covid made it difficult to go to the dmv. It was available in every state in 2018. If you know you are going to fly, you need to have one of the documents. You already need one in order to access certain government facilities. I know my wife had a RealID compliant document in 2016, I got one in 2017 when I moved to WI.Except that some states got on board with offering these only a few years ago.
That would be ours, because we both renewed last year and finally could get Real IDs. They'd not been available more than a year or so at that point.
All good information. Our state you would just go off-renewal and pay the photo fee then your license would renew per usual. I remember the initial deadline I think it was about half of my state was going to catch it before their license expired. I was not one of those people neither was my husband. My mother-in-law renewed 1 month before REAL IDs were issued in my state but she's been able to get one anytime now (you just pay the photo fee for our state if it's outside of your renewal time period). Also in my state you can renew your license 1 year before the actual expiration date (subject to minor and under 21 exemptions).
So really your only issue is getting that DMV appointment if that's required for 1st time REAL ID holders not your expiration date. The expiration date is completely separate from a Federal mandated date that is randomly picked.
The original deadline for flying was October 1, 2020 but extended to October 1, 2021 (end of March 2020), then extended again to May 3, 2023 (in April 2021) and just now extended again to May 7th, 2025 (December 5th 2022).All good information.
I’m thinking more in practical terms that many people who would have upgraded to real id through the natural process of renewal missed a cycle during covid.
More people will need to go out of their way to upgrade than if dmvs had been fully operational the past couple of years.
How big a deal is it to miss the natural cycle though? My new job has me travelling more, so I went and got a Real ID. I was able to walk in to one of the regional centers, had my paperwork, and it cost me $15. The expiration date on the Real ID is the same as my old license (July '24). I agree with @EACarlson, the states have had the tech for years before Covid. Covid has been "over" (yea, I know it's still around, you know what I mean) for months, if not a year. If this is needed for security, then enforce it. If it's not needed, then do away with it.All good information.

We all have passports so I’m not worried about myself. I just see chaos at airports whenever enforcement starts whether it’s 2025 or later
Because the largest impact to DMVs was focused on a smaller time period in 2020 (and it sounds like your wife was caught in that) that's not going to translate to as much of an impact of people's normal cycles en masse as time goes on in relation to the deadlines. That's what I'm trying to get across. We make an appointment for license renewal whether real ID or not. For a non- real ID we can renew online without appointment which I’m sure many take advantage of and contributes to the number of people who have not upgraded. Not to mention the people who go in for renewal and don’t have the additional documents and settle for non-real id.
In my wife’s case she renewed in 2015 and could have upgraded but didn’t for whatever reason. When 2020 came up she would have liked to get one but covid made it difficult if not impossible to get an in person appointment. Anecdotally it just seems like there would be many others like her.
Of course if she really needed it to travel we would take care of it. But (and maybe I’m underestimating the general public) I feel like many people won’t be on top of this even in two more years. Right now it’s about 43% of IDs which isn’t great.
Shocking.
If you know you are going to fly, you need to have one of the documents.
Similar, we moved from PA to VA in 2021 so got real ID driver licenses when we got VA ones. We do both have passports, but I would rather just use DL when flying domestically.I got one when it was time to renew my DL since I had to go renew in person already
You're mistaken. It was not in Missouri as I stated previously. It was available in every state in 2018.
