Real bats flying inside wilderness lodge lobby

I'm sorry you're having to deal with this. I don't know that the bats would bother my family much, but if it were snakes, my DH would have left the hotel.

And as a side note, if you (or any other adult...other than a CM) approached my child for any reason (other than, if they're lost) they would get a piece of my mind. Adults, especially, men, do not approach little girls and strike up conversations. And I teach my children that animals are not to be feared if we understand how to be around them/handle them and if you said something to cause my daughter to be afraid of something she is not afraid of I would be so angry with you. So yeah, when you have a problem like this, don't approach a child and ask them questions...that is inappropriate. Ask the parents.

I do hope the bat problem gets resolved though.

popcorn:: I am surprised no other guests have chimed in here? Maybe someone else staying at the lodge will chime in.....

....Cast members say they can't get rid of them. I want to complain we payed good money to stay here but I'm afraid nobody will do anything. Help!!

I find this really hard to believe that the CM's won't do anything. I can't stand bats. They just really freak me out. If they were constantly flying down the halls.... oh boy. If it were me I'd be going to the front desk, pulling the manager out there and explaining how horrible this situation is. As well I'd sit there and make a big deal until someone from pest managment services or the manager he/she themselves got up there and had the bats removed. I'd be extremely pissed spending $4000-6000 on my vacation only to have it ruined by 6 or so bats in my resort. Wow, that would so freak my kids out. :scared1:

We just got back from a 9 night stay and we did see them flying around. Honestly I thought they were sparrows, as they were small and fast-moving. I thought about the bat possibility, but dismissed it. We were on the 5th floor and watched them fly around for a couple of minutes. Nobody seemed especially alarmed in the lobby.

I can assure you that there were flying animals in the lobby this past weekend.

I have a friend who has worked at The Mercantile at WL for close to 10 years now. I'll have to ask her what's been going on. I have no reason to not believe the OP.

The resorts have been having bird issues for a while - which disgusts me to be perfectly honest. I really am not too surprised that this would be an issue. Why the lackadaisical response I couldn't say. We've seen lots of birds in the lobby and hallways at WL before. Birds are becoming a menace at CR - we got divebombed several times eating at Chef Mickey's last month. I hate birds.

Editing to add that one of our last trips - one in the last year (can't remember which to be exact) - we were staying somewhere else, but having dinner at AP. It had been especially rainy and WL lobby leaks like crazy. There were towels and puddles everywhere. I said something here on the boards and got a similar response as the OP - nothing was wrong there, I was making it up, it wasn't that bad, what did I expect them to do, etc... My friend that works there said the leaks were a huge problem and had been for a while. I had made a comment that if I was staying there I'd be ticked paying so much money for a lobby that leaks and towels laying all over the floor everywhere - it looked horrible. Frankly it took a lot away from our dinner - which was a $300 dinner. I love WL and I love Disney, but they aren't without issues or fault sometimes. I'll ask Glenda about the bats as I'm really curious to know.

Your wife is afraid of bats. I get that. Mine is afraid of snakes and HATES mice. I can relate. If the bats are ruining your vacation, then you go speak to someone who can make a difference. Front desk, front desk manager, GM, doesn't matter. Talk to someone until you get answers. If changing resorts is inconvenient, then I think you need to ask yourself which is more inconvenient...staying at a resort with bats or moving?

As far as the bats go...I'm sure all hotels have mice or other issues. Heck, we read on here all the time about bed bugs. With bats, if they're not in your hotel, then is vacation ok.? The WL pool is well lit and a prime location for bats, so does their presence outside bother her? I guess I'm finding a hard time drawing the line of where ruining the vacation comes in.

If it's me and my vacation is truely ruined, then I find someone who can make a change because if it's bad enough to ruin the vacation, then it's bad enough to make me want to pick up and leave.

With that being said, we've stayed at WL 3 times and never seen a bat or bird inside. The only resort I've seen a bird inside at is CR.

The real issue here is that this OP already stated transfer to another hotel was not an option, but he also didn't say he would check out and request a refund for the nights he was booked but not remaining in the hotel.
The only thing he has said is he wants to be compensated. Which to me translated means something for nothing.
Even the people who verify the report have not stated the bats impeded on their stay.
However, if the OP has that much of an issue, he should do what many have said, request resort change or check out early.
If you want to remain at the hotel, but want disney to pay for it, that's probably not going to fly. No pun intended!!

Ok, I believe that there are bats, or birds, flying around the WL lobby. However, I have some issues with your story and the way that it is changing.

So there are real bats flying around the lodge and not just in the ceiling even down in the lobby a few inches from your face at times. Has my wife and I so terrified we won't go out to enjoy the resort. What should we do?? I feel like our vacation has been seriously destroyed in some ways. Cast members say they can't get rid of them. I want to complain we payed good money to stay here but I'm afraid nobody will do anything. Help!!

Having been to WDW more than 40 times and having stayed at numerous Disney resorts, including WL, I have to inform you that wildlife is a part of Florida.

I don't think that this should really have ruined your vacation. I can offer a few solutions to avoiding the lobby if the flying animals terrify you so.
1. Take the boat launch to MK, or to Contemporary and catch buses to the parks from there
2. Exit through the side exit (towards the Villas) and walk out to the bus stop or parking lot from there.

Also, CMs are not the appropriate people to address your complaints to, they don't have the power to offer you a solution.
1. Ask management to move you to another resort.
2. Ask what measures are being taken to address the situation.

These aren't birds they are bats and they flying low inside hallways etc. Too late to switch resorts we only have tonight and tomorrow left so it'd be a huge pain. This sucks having to run through the lobby hoping not to get a bat in your face.

Considering you were only staying 3 nights, I'm not sure I see how spending two of those three in another resort would have been a huge pain.

These are multiple bats, at least 6 and they are here every night some cm refuse to even come out. This is not ok

We haven't seen anyone corroborate this report and what do you mean by "come out" all areas of the lobby and resort are connected. Where were the CMs not coming out from?

As the OP I am realizing a few things now, mostly from this board. Thank goodness I'm not the only one who thinks having bats fly around the lobby is unacceptable.
We had reservations at artist point for my wife's bday which we cancelled because we literally were too freaked out to sit in the lobby and wait for. My wife was in the hallway by roaring fork and ran outside just in time to see the bats slam into the glass door right in front of us on the other side.

CMs explain they do call animal control to try to catch them but I saw nobody doing that and the conceirge desk says to basically expect to see them every night anyway. They are a protected species and if you know how huge the WL lobby is you would know how hard it could be to catch then. My guess is they are living in the resort now somewhere.

I get the impression this is a new phenomenon happening here and I'm not sure how other guests react. I asked a little girl in the elevator if she was afraid of the bats she said one flew within six inches of her but she didn't seem upset about it?

Anyway, tonight is our last night here. I feel like we should compensated for this but I don't know what they will do seeing as how this issue is affecting everyone who stays here and uses the lobby or restaraunts.

It is unacceptable to a point. The CMs informed you that animal control has been called. Just because you haven't seen them doesn't mean that actions haven't been taken (traps set perhaps)

It is completely innappropriate to ask a little girl if she is afraid of bats. You are lucky her parents didn't yell at you. Why on earth wouldn't you have asked the parents "Have the bats in the lobby affected your stay as well?"

I'm not sure what compensation you are expecting. This has not hindered your ability to use the facilities at the resort (they didn't close the restaurants, you CHOSE not to dine there). The bats aren't affecting the pool, the marina, the rooms etc.

This is some crap. Those of you who didn't pay good money to take a Disney vacation at a deluxe resort can say what you want. Until you are paying for club level accommodations on the one vacation you get a year you don't understand how upsetting it is when you can't enjoy your resort because rabies infected rodents are swooping in front of your face and terrifying children. And what, I can't ask an 8 year old girl I'd bats frighten her? Come on, if she wasn't afraid of the fanged rodents already I dont think asking her would make any difference.

Guys... would you like it when you arrange a romantic getaway with your wife for her birthday and valentines day only to learn bats are upsetting her so you can't sit by the fire place, sit at the resorts restaurants, visit the gift shop, and are freaked out just to walk through the lobby to the door? This is a deluxe 4 star resort not a bleeping camp ground.

This is where you totally lost me.
1. You are on a community of WDW lovers. We have ALL paid good money to visit WDW over the years. Some of us have been visiting for decades, does that make us deserving of better treatment than you? No! So don't tout out the fact that you are staying at a deluxe as a reason why you should be listened to.
2. You stated here that you were "paying for club level accomodations for a week" that "children were terrified". These are false statements as you later told us you didn't pay for club level and that you were only there 3 nights. Also, you asked 1 child if she was scared and she said no. You haven't mentioned terrified children in any of your other accounts with the bats.

A couple things,

I am not an elitist. I didn't pay for club level, must have been a free upgrade

I am only staying 3 nights here, we split our stay because we can't afford 6 nights at a deluxe, even during value season

I don't expect the CMs or anyone else to have a solution to this that can get rid of the bats right away, I understand the complications involved

I wanted to inform people planning their vacation that this could certainly happen to them, and if low flying bats make you uncomfortable then maybe think about another resort.

This doesn't only affect the lobby, but the restaurants and hallways.

Of course there are other things to do in Disney other than hang out at your resort. However, we planned to do this a few evenings. Especially with temps in the low 50s / Hightower 40s at night

Even if this doesn't bother me, my wife is very uncomfortable and I don't blame her

If asking a child how they felt about the much noticed and talked about spectacle that everyone was dealing with in the lobby is a big deal, then I suppose talking to anyone about anything ever is a problem.

It was the fact that you asked a child that was innappropriate. It would have been easier to ask her parents.

Honestly some of you are just jerks. You blow things way out of proportion and try to make me feel bad for being upset about the bats.

Yes changing resorts was an option but by the time we knew that these were indeed bats and that they were here every night it was too late. Honestly it's easy to talk about it on a message board but I'm not totally comfortable complaining to a hotel manager because I hate being "that way". I'd like to be compensated because it is a very uncomfortable situation but if all I got was at least some sympathy and understanding at check out it'd be fine.

Btw and for goodness sakes the little girl was in the elevator with my wife and I after we had just run in to avoid the bats. I didn't approach anyone.

People on this board are just really mean

Depending on the type of bat it may be an endangered or threatened species. As such, you can not just "remove" them. Steps have to be taken to protect the animals and move them in a way that won't harm the bats or the group.

And asking an untrained CM to do the removing? BAD idea for both the CM and the bats. This is wildlife and should not be handled by anyone without training. It's no different then if any other animal had made its way into the area.

Most likely a guest would never notice what was being done to rectify the situation. They would be setting humane traps and fixing the areas where the bats had gained entrance. This will most likely be done at times where the area is least busy. So your normal guest may never see the steps being taken.

I think Disney should set up areas on property with bat houses to allow a safe place for these animals to roost. It would also help keep these sorts of situations from happening.

I guess I don't see how a few bats would ruin a whole vacation. Personally, I would expect Disney to take the steps they need to take and would continue on with my trip. I would expect that of any business and I wouldn't think that standing there complaining would help the situation any. You have to wait for the traps and the like to work. It's not instant or immediate. It's not as if all the bats will be gone within a day. It's a process.

If you have an issue with it, then leave the hotel. Ask for a refund for the rest of your nights and find another place to stay. Doing nothing is the OPs fault and if it was THAT huge of an issue, they would have done something about it. Not just sat around and complaining on a message board.

Nowhere did I try to make you "feel bad" about being upset by the bats. I agree that they are there and that it isn't an acceptable situation.

What kind of compensation are you wanting? And how exactly do you think you are going to get it without talking to a manager?

A lot of the members of the DISboards have had bad experiences at WDW, myself included. But I hate to break it to you, the only way to get the situation resolved is to speak to management.

And for the record, I've returned to my WDW resort room to find a 3 foot poisonous snake outside my door. I know what threatening and dangerous wildlife is like at a WDW resort. You know how that situation was fixed? Calling the manager! The front desk staff refused to do anything.

I've also seen alligators, rats (and rat traps), armadillos, spiders, lizards, snakes of various sizes, birds of prey etc.

OP, I totally understand how a trip can be ruined by certain events.
Our opinion on the severity of the matter is of no consequence, because it is a big deal to you and your wife.
That being said, you really only have 2 options: leave and end your trip early:sad1: or put a bowl on your head run through the lobby as fast as you can and have a great day enjoying the other things WDW has to offer.
As judgmental as we can all be, no one here likes to hear someone is having an awful time in disney.
Once again, I encourage you to pretend they are magical little creatures, and have a good time. And next time you see something flying around don't ask what it is. What you don't know won't hurt. I think???

Wild animals in my hotel's lobby and hall would upset me as well. I have to assume Disney is doing all it can to solve the problem if, for no other reason, than for liability. My first thought was, well . . . it's probably not that big of a deal. But, then someone posted about the rabies risk and all I could think after that was -- yes, it's a really big deal. I would be just as upset if I saw rats scurrying around the lobby and hallways. And, no matter how many times I would try to imagine the rats are Remi and his friends, I would not find scurrying rats to be magical. Disgusting yes, magical no.

This is supposed to be a very nice hotel! It is certainly an expensive one! Like the OP, I would be very upset. And, like the OP, I might not have realized the extent of the problem until, as a practical matter, trying to change hotels for our last night would not be worth the trouble.

In any event, reporting it to the manager and asking for compensation seems appropriate. I was amazed at a recent thread about compensation people have received for various issues. Several were compensated very generously (night comped or invited back for a free night or two!) just for a maid leaving their room door open. Well, that happened twice to dh and I on our recent trip. The door didn't latch, the lock didn't engage and the door was open for hours after the maid left, while we were at the parks. We reported it and eventually it was fixed. Fortunately, nothing was stolen. We didn't ask for compensation. But, many people on that thread were compensated generously -- and it only happened to them once (with nothing being stolen)! So, clearly, we should have asked!

What I find odd is that no one else has mentioned seeing the bats. :confused3

Yes, there are gators in Florida. They have been seen in lakes at certain resorts, etc.

;) You messed up in a couple of places, but this was definitely my favorite. Better luck next time.

This is NOT a big deal. Everyone has to stop thinking Dracula......bats are alot less dangerous then snakes and gotor and whatever other animals living in the area!

Any animal, humans too, that is ill, can be dangerous! We put out bat houses in the woods near the house so the bat live nearby and eat the insects. We see them...never had a problem. They dont fly into your face or our hair!

I am sorry if your afriad of them, but as you said its the end of your vacation..........Don't stay at WL next time.

I do find it very odd this is the first we every hread of it......
