Ready to get flamed ... but here is my question

To Rootskate and Momof5cubs....

Sometimes the truth is funnier than fiction. I learned that from the infamous Delswife trip reports!!!

Always look on the bright side of life..da doot da doot doot da doot!!!!

Good luck Jhenery getting a strait and informative answer....and remember if your not satisfied when you get your room assignment Disney will always do whatever they can to satisfy you or all us "addicicts" wouldn't exist if they didn't constantly try to please!!!!

Just to make a small rectifycation, we have ALWAYS received our room requests in regards to a non smoking room. Yes, we do ask for the room because of allergies. I guess my point is, that it never actually says "guaranteed" on our reservation when we receive it in the mail even though we always get it upon arrival. We also request a first floor or an elevator building {at OKW} due to a disability {no stairs} and that also never says guaranteed on the reservation, just "request", but we still get it.

I've always requested a smoking room and have never had a reservation that said "guaranteed". And probably about 2/3 of the time there is no smoking room available when I check in. So in my experience smokers certainly don't have an advantage over anyone who can't get guaranteed non-smoking on their reservation! Doesn't ruin my vacation - we just go outside somewhere. I think most smokers should be getting used to it - seems harder and harder to get a smoking optional room at all hotels - not just Disney. The check-in people at Disney have always been nice about not being able to give us a smoking room - some have offered to see if we could be moved the next day, others tell us to smoke on the balcony (if one is available) and I've also been told to just open the window and stand near it. We don't do that but it does make you wonder how they clean the room to get the smell out for the next person. I've stayed at AKL twice and neither time was able to get a smoking room so I can't help you out with where they are. This is one of the resorts were we were told to smoke on the Balcony though. But when you know you are in a non-smoking area you hate to do that often. We'd go out in the morning and kind of look around and listen to see if anyone nearby was outside before we'd light up.

I called CRO today to make sure about some things on our ressies. I asked about it being guaranteed and she said no but that it usually isn't a problem at all since most people ask for non smoking. Well.... we will see. :D

It must be possible because it definitely states "guaranteed smoking" on my confirmation. I didn't ask for it but had a great conversation with one of the CM's at some point & had mentioned that the only thing my DH cares about is having a balcony. So they can do it.

I'm really surprised about this.
We were always told - savannah room = no smoking.
Pool view = smoking optional.

We were even told this on the Sunset Safari...that it was the only resort wherein if you had a balcony, you couldn't smoke on it if you were facing animals.

DH quit last year, but I still smoke...I just go down to the pool area to have my smoke...like another poster said - I stand near the 'butt cans' so I don't get the "looks" from the non-smokers.

Also can anyone tell me how much the backstage safari costs?[/QUOTE]

If you mean the tour at the park, its $65 per person.

Yes all the resorts have smoking optional. When I said a smoking room, the cast member said "we call them smoking optional rooms"
I do believe that all resorts have them. Also yes we had a savannah view room that was smoking but we were told we could not smoke on the balcony.

Boy, things have certainly changed over the past few years!

My first-ever stay on-site was at CBR in April 1999. I had asked for a non-smoking room, but when I checked in I was told by an irate and overly brusque CM that the hotel was abou 90% booked so the only room I could get was a smoking room. Okay, I said; when i got to the room it was just fine. I could tell people had been smoking in it, but it wasn't stinky or discolored.

Now it seems that the balance has shifted; it used to be hard to get a non-smoking room, now it's hard to get a smoking room. And that in only 5 years!

I don't know if I would call it an "up". If you research the garden view rooms available to smokers at the deluxe resorts, you would find they are often the worst views or very far away from main buildings and bus stops. We can't even book a standard room at WL because they are all non-smoking.My DH is very considerate of non-smokers & does not want to offend anyone even if CRO tells you its ok to smoke on any balcony he won't do it. I've spent countless hours trying to find a resort that meets out needs and only at POLYGVC has it all. Having a guaranteed smoking room will hopefully cut down on problems from both sides.

Wow jjohnson I just wanted to commend your husband! I'm one of those people who wind up in coughing fits if I inhale any smoke (no asthma but apparently I have an odd allergy to it) so whenever I've been on balconies at other resorts and hotels and smokers are outside I always wind up back inside. I never complain because they are obviously being courteous and smoking outside, but what you said about your husband not even doing it on balconies just really put a smile on my face. Thats so incredibly courteous of him so thank you both for being so nice like that!

And as a non-smoker I had no idea how hard it must be for smokers to find a decently located smoking room! I definitely agree with others on here that Disney should designate a few other rooms with better locations as smoking to better serve everyone.
