Fall for Murder

I like fall and murder, just not together in this book.

I recently did (or rather, didn't) that on a book, only the second time in the 12 years I've been on Goodreads. And the thing is, there was a very long waitlist for the book, so it was obviously appealing to some people. "My Friends" by Fredrick Backman Anyone read it? What did I miss?

I couldn’t get into that book at all! I’ve read some others by that author and enjoyed them but I just could not finish that one.

#35 - Fall for Murder by -Ah, fall, the time of year when the air is crisp, the leaves golden, and sweaters and boots are back. Not to mention pumpkin spice everything. I had planned on a fall shopping trip to buy something pretty for the house, but I found a body instead. As mentioned before I did not like this book but I finally pushed through and finished it last night. The main character is unlikable, the writing is simple and choppy. And after reading the entire book, the murder was solved and everything wrapped up nice in like 2 paragraphs. lol

I really wanted to read more of these 'cozy' books for fall but I'm not sure I can. I'm going to read a thriller or horror next to get back to enjoying reading.

I really try to push through to the end of every book I start to read. But sometimes, it isn't worth my time. The last book I DNF was The Andromedia Strain by Michael Crichton. It was published in 1969 and the technology they were using in the book was just too frustrating. It didn't make sense.

I have read 3 other books that were all 4 stars-
"The Martha's Vineyard Beach and Book Club" by Martha Hall Kelly. It started out a little slow, but got more interesting. What was most interesting for me was that, as a lover of Martha's Vineyard, I was fascinated to learn of the truth of the role that Martha's Vineyard played in World War II.

"Die, Die, Birdie" by Joanna Cambell Slan-Just a fun to read cozy mystery.

"The Secret Hotel in Berlin" by Catherine Hokin-I really liked reading this book about a hotel that Hitler and his staff frequented during WWII. It was told in 2 timelines, and it was well "tied together" at the end.

20. Sandwich by Catherine Newman. Set on Cape Cod, the protagonist is a a menopausal woman on vacation with her family. Fortunately this book is pretty short. I found her whiny and annoying. I really cannot recommend it.

Sounds like a lot of us haven’t liked books lately.

I just started “The Butcher” last night but I am going to stop it for now. I saw ‘the video’ earlier and I just can’t read this book. They are not related but the gore is just a bit too much for me right now.

Back to “cozy” fall books. lol

I hate to continue the trend, but need to update. Two stinkers in a row;
14/20 "Romantic Comedy", Curtis Sittenfeld 2/5 stars - I disliked this book. It was neither all that romantic, nor was it funny. Worse, the characters stated political opinions as "fact" which was really off-putting. It's about a writer for "The Night Owls" sketch comedy show (SNL), and the writer falls for a major star, guest singer. Did I mention that this takes place during COVID years and a good chunk of the book is a long, dull email exchange? Why did they not use the phone feature on the cell phones they were using to email each other with? Even a text exchange would have been more interesting. It's another Reese Witherspoon recommendation - I should have known better.
15/20 "I will Die on This Hill, Autistic Adults, Autism Parents, and the Children Who Deserve a Better World", Meghan Ashburn, 2/5 stars - the title is more interesting than the content. It's too bad the content doesn't match the title. The Author spends a lot of time on message boards discussing her autistic kids, then complains that she gets criticized. She also discounts any opinion from anyone who is not diagnosed autistic, or who is not a minority. Don't even bother picking this one up if you are a non-autistic white male - you get roundly dismissed in every chapter...and the Afterward. I almost gave it 3 stars because it does have some good references listed in it but the dismissive tone continued into the Afterward and I had had enough. Hey Ms. Ashburn, I think I can explain why you keep getting criticized - but I already know you don't want my opinion.

I've done that a couple of times over the last month. I should have kept track of the names to tell you which ones they were. The most current one is What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty. I put it down 26 pages in. It's my book club pick for this month. I've never been able to read this author's books. There's something about the way she writes or something. A couple of other members are also have trouble or don't like the story.

@Christine I’m currently in a slump. Started two books that I’m having difficulty getting into. Since we like similar, any recs? I really want to lose myself in a book.
