Reading, PA--What the heck happened? Perhaps controversial...

I live near Reading, too (my parents live in Muhlenberg township. I miss those ROC stores! I used to love to head over there to check out Carter's, Old Navy and Hartstrings when my kids were little. The last time I drove through there, I was horrified. :confused3 My family always goes to the outlets in Lancaster. We do go to the movie theater in Fairgrounds Mall though-it is very nice as a previous poster said. My stepdaughter bought her prom dress in the JC Penney outlet for $30!

I just wanted to say that I'm sorry I hijacked your thread with mall talk. I just meant to point out that what you witnessed down there is ALL OVER the place in the Reading area, from Moss St to the mall to our Wal-Mart. OMG, the Wal-Marts are pig sties. I will visit the Wal-Mart in Trexlertown, which is like a country club, but I flat-out refuse to visit our close-by store.

I am glad you did talk about the malls/shopping centers:yay: :thumbsup2 You are on the scene, so to speak. You are seeing what I described first hand--I am sure it is awful what has happened to your city:hug:

.

It is such a shame too because Reading is such a beautiful city. The location with the river and the mountain in the background and the architecture is just stunning. I wish it could be fixed up because is a true gem.

There are no words for some of the homes:worship: Breathtaking:love: It is a terrible shame what has happened.

How to take it back? I don't think they are on the right path as far as Moss St., etc:sad1: I don't think Reading will recover unless some MAJOR changes occur.

I just wanted to let everyone know.... I live in that area. I can look out my window and see what was known as the "ROC". I would first like to say that the entire area in not "non-english" speaking people and "non-english" signs. There are plenty of english signs. Thats a bit dramatic. Also, the outlets leaving have nothing to do with the residents in the area. I worked in the outlets as a teen and there was an issue with the owners of the buildings not paying taxes on any of the buildings they owned. Also, the building failed many city codes. I do agree its ashame the outlets are not there because they did enhance the area and now the buildings are just vacant and sitting there. Windows are busted out and etc. Any abandoned buildings in any area will attract "negative" attention. I dont know what trash all around the place people are talking about because there is not trash laying around everywhere. Get a grip. Its the citys fault that they let that happen. They could have steped in and assisted with helping to keep the outlets there. The area always had flowers an trees and etc that the city maintained. The outlets left and so did all of that "beautification" stuff.

Yes. Yes there is. It is dirty and awful down by the ROC. Perhaps you are immune to it, but the fine folks who have lived there for generations are suffering because of what Reading has become.

It is dirty and third-world like:guilty:

Again-Such a shame, because there are some homes there that could grace the front of magazine covers:love:

The under-achieving people that have decided to move there and do nothing to improve their neighborhoods have ruined it for everyone.

They could have steped in and assisted with helping to keep the outlets there. .

Huh? People were murdered in that area left and right. The outlets HAD to leave. They HAD to remove themselves and their clients form the low lives that chose to move into that area and destroy it.

I always wondered how to pronounce the name of Reading? Is it like Reed or Red? And I know, this is a Zombie Thread. LOL!

Red ing and what is with all the Zombie threads today lol Second one I started reading before I realized

I hope Reading can come back. This thread is depressing. Our local mall at the south Jersey shore has gone downhill too. I haven't been there in over 10 years and it was becoming a low class dump then.
