Reaction to the Movie Eragon?

Well, you are all making me think I should read the books now. I was so disgusted by the movie that I had decided not to but maybe I should reconsider. It's interesting to hear all the other comments.

The only good part of the movie for me was Saphira, although there were major discrepancies with her portrayal as well. I will agree the part of Durza was well acted. Unfortunately they pretty much butchered the whole storyline. I read somewhere that they didn't have much of a budget for the movie, so I think the lack of cash contributed to the crappiness of the movie.

I just watched it on DVD and I have to tell you that I thought it was really disturbing. I'm just wondering if anyone else felt that way or if it was just me being too sensitive. I thought that the evil sorcerer was one of the most frightening characters I've ever seen in a movie:scared: and I'm kind of shocked that this was marketed to kids. I'd love to know some of your thoughts.
I know I'm probably in the minority, but I was surprised it was rated PG. I thought it was pretty violent and somewhat gory for a young child. My DS is 11 so I wasn't really upset about letting him watch it. We borrowed it from the library so I was glad I didn't pay money to see it.

We actually liked the movie, but all agreed that it seemed like a medieval remake of Star Wars. Afterwards, DD read the book and said it was vastly different than the movie.

I guess I'm in the minority but I really enjoyed the film. But then I adore Robert Carlyle and I'd pretty much watch him breath. My daughter and I both are looking forward to reading the book.

I honestly think that the only way one could like that movie is if they hadn't first read the book.

And yes, I highly recommend both Eragon and Eldest (the sequel and second of three books). If you enjoy fantasy, you'll enjoy the books.

I'm still disgusted that I wasted 15 bucks to see that crap. :sad2:

Sthronds (hiya!),
The books are much better than the movie was. I'm not that big of a fantasy book fan so that's saying a lot for me. Like others have said, the movie is drastically different than the book. So much so that I don't even consider it the same way as I normally would a 'book-based' movie. If you could consider the movie standing purely by itself, it's a pretty solid 'swords & sorcery' fantasy movie - I'd give it a B rating - watchable, but could be better. I did enjoy the movie, I really did. But I'd give the book an A-.

My opinion on the Harry Potter flicks -
I wish that the producers of the 'Harry Potter' movies would pull a Peter Jackson / George Lucas and release extended versions of each one to bring them more in line with the books. I know that probably wouldn't ever happen though. To overuse the letter-grade analogy, I'd rate each Harry Potter book to be A's or A+'s, and depending on the individual movie they'd be in B+ or B range for the most part. The movies so far are steadily increasing in quality in my opinion - Goblet of Fire was an A- flick to me - and hopefully that trend will continue.

My mom who loves all things dragon liked the movie(and never heard of the book at first)

Watched it with my friend...have to say, on it's own, it's a good movie, but as a book tie in, horrible.
