We are back from a great five day vacation. It was our first trip with "grown" kids (DD - 22 and DS - 26) and I have to say it was even better than when they were small. I got so many great tips from this board that I thought I would share our dining experiences with those that are interested.
First of all, at the risk of opening a hot topic, I have to say that as usual the refillable mug worked great for us. We only ate in the food court at the CBR twice but we probably got our money's worth on the mugs by the second day. We started each day with coffee and hot chocolate, had two or three drinks when we returned mid day and a few more at the end of the day.
Our only dissapointment in food while we were there was at the resort. CBR used to have the very best pizza. We ordered one on the first night....it was awful....$18.00 for what appeared to be a cheap, frozen pizza....not at all what we used to get. We looked at the rest of the fare there and decided we would not be eating at Port Royale.
I had brought muffins and a few breakfast items with us and then we picked up pastries in France and Norway for breakfast on some days.
On our first day we had a PS at Le Cellier in Canada. I had eaten there before and loved it. I ordered the open faced sirloin steak sandwich, DS ordered the French Dip, DS had the ceasar salad and DH, my hamburger man, ordered a steak burger. Both DS and DH had the cheddar cheese soup. Everything was delicious...cooked to perfection...the service was great. My only complaint came not with the restaurant but with the couple two tables down. When we arrived their toddler was fussy and crying. Shortly after they allowed her to walk on their table. Everyone around just looked in disbelief but the child continued to walk and climb all over the table. Then she cryed more and threw a plate off of the table. I know WDW is a place for children, and you have a right to take them to any restaurant you want to. However, I also feel the other patrons have a right to enjoy their meals. We started taking our childrent when they were 18 months old and we took them to the better restaurants. However, on many occasions one of us took them out of the restaurant if they could not behave. Well enough said.
Second day we went to Typhoon Lagoon and Downtown Disney. I really think that allowing people to bring small coolers to the water parks is admirable on the part of Disney. We took water, drinks, fruit, crackers and cheese. It was a nice little "picnic." We ate mid afternoon at the Earl of Sandwich at Downtown Disney. The hot sandwiches (really cheap in price $4.99) were probably the best we have ever eaten. The roast beef was prime, sliced paper thin, toasted with a wonderful cheese and dressed with butter lettuce and tomatoes. We were so impressed we bought more to take back to the hotel.
Third day we ate lunch at Flametree Barbeque in AK. We have eaten there many times and have never been disappointed. We had the 1/2 rack of ribs and bbq pork sandwiche with a side order of cheesey french fries. The ribs were so tender and moist....loved the lunch. For dinner I had booked the Fantasmic package at MGM. I was a little worried because of mixed reviews on Hollywood and Vine. Not to worry......it was also wonderful. We started with boiled shrimp and steamed clams....followed by ceasar salad, fresh fruit and various other salads and homemade breads...the buffet included salmon in a wonderful lemon sauce, sirloin steak grilled to perfection, yankee pot roast, pork tenderloin, garlic mashed yukon gold potatoes, the best green beans I have ever eaten and probably a dozed other things I cannot remember. Even the picky members of my family were in heaven. Then to my favorite part - the desserts. What I loved most about the dessert bar is that each dessert was presented in small, two bite portions....key lime pie (to die for) carrot cake, chocolate mouse, candy bar mascarpone cheese cake and build your sundae soft serve ice cream....again I am leaving many of the selections out, but I think you get the picture.
Lunch on day four was at the Yakitori House (Japan) in EPCOT. All four of us ordered the Tonosamo combination platter. It was good, not great, but the restaurant was cool, overlooking the gardens and it made for a tranquil lunch. We snacked through EPCOT all evening, starting with nachos and beer in Mexico, Bratwurst and beer in Germany, pretzels, funnel cakes and finally pastries in France. DH, DD and DS got hungry again after we got back to the hotel and they opted for bacon cheeseburgers at Port Royale....they said they were good.
Day five I finally got to eat at the Prime Time Cafe. On the last 12 trips I always got out voted. We had "Brother Bob' as our server and he was really funny, but not over the edge which I was grateful for. He was just silly enough to keep us entertained. I ordered the fried chicken, DH had the chicken sandwich and DS had the meatloaf. (DD was not feeling well and went back to the hotel.) We shared a basket of onion crispers which were delicious. The servings were generous....the mashed potatoes were more of the yukon gold variety..wonderful...and all in all we agreed it was a great lunch. Loved the 50's atmosphere. Dinner found us in Mexico with all of us ordering the combination platter...food was good....we have never been dissapointed and the view and breeze were great.
All in all the dining experiences were great. Hope this helps any of you making your meal choice.
