I was over at another forum and found this about the pyrex dishes from World Kitchen. I noticed someone posted about $1.99 pyrex dishes here at DIS.

HOPE EVERYONE TAKES THE TIME TO READ THIS MESSAGE.

Got any new Pyrex dishes in your cooking utensils? This is a must
read.

I Checked at Wal-Mart and all the warnings are there.

About 5:30 PM there was a loud bang from the oven. Sylvia opened the
oven door and the Pyrex dish had shatt ered into a million pieces.
The roast beef (our first in many months) was peppered with small
shards of very sharp glass. Normally,I am quick to inform Sylvia she
did something stupid. However, this time she was nowhere near the
stove when it blew. I shoveled the glass and the now mashed potatoes
into a bucket with two putty knives. I then sucked the remains with
the shop vac. I let everything cool down and then scrubbed the oven
with Simple Green and some hot soapy water. It took over an hour to
clean up the goo. Upon completion I ran the oven empty to see if the
temperature controller was working okay. I suspected the oven got
too hot and the dish simply blew. This was not the case however.
The oven came up to temperature and cycled normally. We threw a
disgusting frozen pizza in the oven and it cooked okay.

What is going on?

I Googled exploding Pyrex dishes and got ten million hits.
Exploding Pyrex is very common.

Here is the story: . A long, long time ago in a country we all know and love was a
company named Corning. They made Pryex dishes. The material they
used is called borosilicate glass. This stuff is indestructible.
But like everything else, the Bottom Liners had a great idea: sell
the technology to another company. The Chinese discovered that using
soda lime glass was almost as good as borosilicate glass and a lot
cheaper. Today, Wal-Mart is the lar gest distributor of Pryex
products. Corning not only sold the technology to a company called
World Kitchen, they also sold the rights to the original Pyrex logo.
Seamless. The consumer will never know.

Now it seems people are getting hurt using soda lime Pyrex. We
were lucky because the dish broke while the oven was closed and the
damage was limited to the oven cavity. Others have been less
fortunate. Some dishes explode when they are lifted from the heating
rack in the oven with devastating results. Some people are heavily
scarred. World Kitchen is in denial. They say that the dishes are
another brand, not theirs. Contrary to their denials the victims
usually have more than one of these dishes and the Pryex logo is
clearly visible.

If you buy a Pryex dish beware. The label on the front says oven
safe, freezer safe, microwave safe. The instructions on the back
tell another story. You cannot move a soda lime Pyrex dish from the
freezer to the oven and expect it to survive. The fine print goes on
and on about what you are not allowed to do with the Pyrex dish. The
fine print has prevented World Kitchen from being sued becaus e they
have warned the consumer that their Pyrex dishes are junk from the
get go. And they are the same price as the original Corning dishes.
What a bunch of losers we all are for buying this crap.
What to do?
If you own borosilicate Pryex dishes, no fear. They have to be more
than 25 years old to be sure they are indeed Corning dishes. I am
not sure if the old Pryex dishes have anything stamped in them that
indicates they are made by Corning. You may continue to use the soda
lime dishes for holding stuff. Just do not attempt to roast or
microwave with them as the hazard is very clear.

The reason the soda lime dishes let go is that over time they
develop micro-cracks. Once a few micro-cracks are present and once
some liquid finds its way into the cracks you have the bomb
situation. The liquid is like shoving a crowbar in the dish and
pulling it apart. Super heated liquids expand rapidly and it is the
super heated liquids that force the soda lime glass to shatter into
tens of thousands of shards.

Since Corning no longer makes Pyrex and Sylvia proudly holds a
large collection of the soda lime Pyrex, we decided that one bomb in
the kitchen is enough. The Pyrex dishes will go bye-bye in this
week's trash. I do not know what we will use for cake and pie dishes
going forward . If you have some suggestions we are listening.

I strongly urge you not to use the soda lime Pyrex for the oven,
stovetop or microwave. The slightest invisible crack is all it takes
to have a mess and a possible injury.

As to World Kitchen: them and their cheap dishes. In case
you are wondering: World Kitchen is not a USA company.

Growing up in the seventies i remember several times this happening with pyrex. It happens specifically when you go from Hot to Cold to quickly. For example you put a hot pyrex from the oven into the sink with gold water. Or you put it on a countertop that just had ice on it and the surface is really cold. Just some common sense should make it OK.

I had the same thing happen to me!! I was cooking chicken in the oven in a Bi-Mart[store in NW] pyrex 9 x 11 clear pan, when it exploded like a bomb!!!!

I posted a bout here. And was told I had something wrong.

Then went out and bought metal pans for cakes and pies. Altho I wish I had looked into the Silicone bake ware more?

I too have had Pyrex explode in the oven. If I recall correctly, it didn't go from freezer/frig to oven. I was making chicken and the dish had been sitting in my cabinets. It hasn't stopped me from using Pyrex, but I must admit that I don't use it much anymore. As the years passed and pieces broke, I've replaced things with non-pyrex pieces.

I had that happen about 10 years ago when I added water (not hot) to the pan of a chicken I was roasting. What a mess.

I still use and love Pyrex, though.

OT but, I couldn't help but think how strange this line is, "Normally,I am quick to inform Sylvia she did something stupid." Sounds like a real sweetheart.

I had a an 8-cup Pyrex measuring cup shatter IN MY CABINET when I touched it once. There was no change in temperature to 'cause it'. Of course it took forever to clean up because the pieces were in the cabinet, across the counter and floor below and even up to five feet away in my kitchen (it really exploded). It was doubly upsetting because it was at face level when it happened. Luckily my reflexes were good and I closed my eyes the instant it happened.

I noticed that too...what the heck?
I dislike when things are posted without attribution...makes it hard to judge their credibility.

Something tells me that the author of this has issues that go beyond a broken dish in the oven.

Weirdest thing! This happened to me yesterday. I was emptying the dishqsher and I just touched the measuring cup and it exploded! There was glass everywhere and I mean everywhere (including all over my just-out-of-the-oven apple crumble).
I had never heard of that happening!

Way back 25 years ago I had one of those flat top stoves with the white pyrex tops.
When my youngest was born I was in a 2 story and it was easier to have a portacrib in the kitchen than run upstairs every time I had to check on him. I had 2 other sons who lived in the yard in the summer and I didn't want to leave them out of site.
I had a problem with the stove touch pads and the repair man told me to get rid of the stove or move the crib to another room because he had seen those pyrex tops explode and they fly shards of dagger glass all over. I didn't have to hear any more since I had pyrex shatter on me in the past.
I got myself a plain old gas stove and have it to this day.
I don't care if it is an old wives tale or not, I have had pyrex shatter on me and am not going to take chances.
I do have a few pieces of bakeware still but I use ocassionally, I like my metal pans more.

 :scared1:

It is partly TRUE there are Explosions!!

I know is my Pyrex pan EXPLODED in my OVEN.

And

I like my metal bake ware a THOUSAND TIMES more knowing I don't have to worry about it Exploding in someones face. And I use clear plastic measuring cups.

It just isn't worth the risk to keep using glass cookware when there are good alternatives!!

Last year I had one explode. I took something out of the oven in a 8X11 dish and set it on top of the oven to cool. Went into the living room and heard it explode.. I had glass everywhere. I'm still finding it a year later. Because of it I had to get a area rug for in my kitchen, it was hot it actually left burn marks on my floor. I am just thankful none of the kids (or me) were in there! So yes it is true but it hasn't stopped me from using it I bought a whole new set I use it all the time. I think there must have been a small crack or something in the one that exploded. I check them carefully now each time I pull one out to use.

This is crazy, this happened with my Pyrex LAST NIGHT!!!!!!!!!

Baking lasagne, and BANG! I'm still cleaning the tiny shards of glass. I've used Pyrex all of my married life, grew up with my mother using it, and I never heard of this happening, but it sure did happen to me! Weird to see a thread about this!

Wow, that is freaky
You'll probably be finding pieces of glass until the springtime. When my dish exploded there were a million pieces all over my kitchen, it was crazy.
