Re: DIS Boards Show - Couples Meeting Because of Disney

Val & I met at OKW - hence my screen name. :goodvibes

This was back in the early 90's before the internet really got going. I was active in a Disney related forum on Compuserve back then. in 1991, we all decided to to a meet at WDW in early December where I met a lot of really nice folks. We all had fun and decided to do this every year, which turned into a behind the scenes tour and MVMCP weekend routine annually. Fast forward a couple of years. I had become good friends with a couple from New Orleans through this group. That year my friend's Mom decided to bring along her two cousins.

I have a vivid memory of first seeing Valerie at an evening reception for the group. I was standing near the door to the balcony when my friend's mom arrived with her cousins. I was immediately taken - and apparently I made a pretty good impression on her.

But, we lived far apart and I had been single for 45+ years. Would this work? We spent several years doing the long-distance dating thing, which included several meets at WDW.

We've now been married over 13 years and still love WDW.

Just listened to the email show and realized that Val & I were specifically mentioned!

Compuserve? I remember that...with my old 1200 baud modem...

Tracey and I didn't get together via Disney, but we did find it as a common ground pretty early. We knew each other for a few years through friends, started hanging together with the group, went to a NYE party with two other couples, and kissed at midnight. We were engaged at Easter and married two days after Christmas.

I grew up watching repeats of MMC and such with my father, and seeing the special WWOD episodes about the parks had me enthralled - but we couldn't afford to go - we had family in England so we had to save up to fly there every few years.

Tracey had mentioned never having been either, so on the Valentine's Day after we started dating I gave her a card - which said we were going to Disney World...

Obviously we are still going...

Jeff, I had to keep from crying when you shared with me how you and Val met at dinner in Hershey. You and Val restore my faith in love every time I see you both. :lovestruc

That's neat. My husband and I got engaged 2 weeks after we met and married 10-1/2 months after that. When you know, you know. :goodvibes

Me and my husband went about the same pace. We met Sept 22nd Got engaged Oct 25th and Married Dec 18th all in 2008!! We just knew and here we are almost 2 years later :lovestruc

Thanks Kat. That was a fun night at Hershey.

Don't worry, your day will come. You're a pretty special lady. :cutie:

AWWW, I'm tearing up here! :lovestruc

It's so lovely to hear all these stories!

Me and my boyfriend didn't meet through Disney, but I met him almost 2 years before we started going out (he was a friend of my sister's and he came round to our house as part of a big group of friends) and as soon as he walked through the front door I thought he was the most attractive guy I've ever seen... it will be 6 years next month and I still feel the same!

Thanks for sharing....you guys really must be a great match, I mean she moved to Buffalo for you! :rotfl:

We're kinda neighbors...I'm in Cleveland, so I know what it must mean to have someone willing to move to a place where you get as much snow as we do!

Lol, yeah, I know, but she's really embraced it. This is not the thread to extoll the virtues of your hometown, but Buffalo really has much more to offer than what people give it credit for. It's negative reputation nationally is way off in my opinion, and the snow thing is totally overblown.

We spent a weekend in Cleveland last month and had an excellent time. I do consider Buffalo and Cleveland to be like cousins on opposite sides of Lake Erie.

We're the Paul and Lisa mentioned on the DisBoards show (thanks Pete!), and we met on the monorail in 2008. We were both headed to MouseFest 101 at the Contemporary, we ended up on the same monorail car and noticed each others' lanyards and started talking. That evening, we ended up hanging out with two other people at MVMCP and by the end of MouseFest, we were spending all our time together. Since he was stationed in the Air Force in Texas at the time and I live in Florida, we had to do a long distance relationship for a while, other than several trips to see each other. Skype was our friend!

We got engaged about 5 months after we met (at Artist Point!) and he moved to Florida when he retired from the Air Force that July. We got married at Shades of Green (couldn't quite swing the Disney Fairytale Wedding we wanted) one year to the day after we met.

Having a Disney-loving mate has been such a joy - I usually ended up dating someone who not only turned out not to be so fond of Disney, but who also tried to stop me from going. Being with someone who's as obsessed with Disney as I am is SO much better! :lovestruc
