? Re: booking return flight only and then flight out when price goes down.

We are flying out of Boston Logan beginning of May..the flight price for return is great at $92, but flight out is ridiculous...$147 to $193 per person one way. I was thinking of booking just the return flight for us (6 in our party), then waiting to see if flight out drops in price. Has anyone ever done this? Or should I just bite the bullet and book it all? That would be about $300 or more per person, which is $80-$100 more per person than I have ever paid. Agh! Flight stress!!

Howdy neighbor! What airline are you looking at? Did you try PVD with SW? Sometimes, I book one leg of the flight but very rarely. We flew BOS to MCO with AirTran in Nov and Dec. We got $200 for a direct/nonstop flight.

I often do this. I booked our flight (there) for our vacation(to LV) in December 2010. Just booked our flight back today. The price was too high in December, so I waited for the price to drop. I also am flying there with one airline and back with another. Being a family of 5, price is the key thing when flying.

Okay, then, you could book the $147 down and the $92 back and your round-trip fare would be $239... which is $119.50 each way Even at $147, it's less than fourteen cents per mile.

But, I've done it. Not necessarily because of the price but because I've known exactly when I need to be back, but not when I can or want to go Never a problem, and generally on a single airline in both directions.

I started booking one-way flights in '09 on SW.

One leg of the RT flight had a fare drop, I do what is normally done to get a credit for future use. But when I tried the system wouldn't allow me to take advantage of the fare. I'm guessing that it was because the total cost of the RT flight was below a certain threshold... but it just wouldn't allow it to go through.

So I then decided to book one-way tickets. It can be a pain, but makes it much easier for getting credits.

Thanks everyone for their suggestions/comments...Since my husband and I had a credit we went ahead and booked our roundtrip flight with JetBlue. Still not the greatest price but we will be able to take advantage of a credit if the price goes down (unlike the people we are traveling with). But when I try to book anyone else on the flight today the flight price increases to $193 out and $122 return. They are only offering lower flight price for 2 people...so I am waiting to check later or over the next week. If they keep doing this I guess I will keep booking 2 people at a time, LOL.

One disadvantage of one ways is if you have to cancel, since it is not one intinerary, fees will need to paid on each ticket.

This often happens. The prices are tiered. There might only be 2 more seats left on the lower price so when you try to book 3 it won't let you. To me, anything lower than $250 for direct/non stop flights is great these days.

Thanks! I am just a little irked because I had found flights for all of us last week for $205 RT but we needed to leave the night before we had planned and everyone took too long to give me the go ahead...and the flight was gone. Sooo, I am playing the waiting game, LOL!

Been there, done that. I finally just booked for myself, DH, and our children and told everyone else they were on their own. I just couldn't take it any more. Plus, it is easier to book fewer seats with the tiered pricing.

I am going to do this for on Southwest for a trip I am taking in September. The flights for the departure date of the trip will be released in February but the flights for the return trip wont be released until the next batch.....

Scary for me as I have never done this before but I love flying out of Islip...

(Unless Jetblue has some really great rates when I am ready to book)
