Hi there,

I'm a new member and I called member services this morning to try and book 5 nights in Venice through RCI. Aside from being told there was no availability there from January until May (he didn't look further), I was also told that it wasn't a nightly property. In fact, I was told that no European RCI locations are nightly properties and they must all be booked for a week. This is quite contrary to what's in the package I received and even the member website which identifies some resorts as being nightly and some as being weekly.

Does this sound unusual to any of you?

I also feel that it sounds a bit strange for there to be no availability at a resort during a five month window, especially when four of those five months are during their lowest season. I understand that I'm looking 7 months out and not 2 years, so I suppose that puts me at a disadvantage.

Anyway, I'm new and just curious if I should take what I heard with a grain of salt and try again or if I should get back to the drawing board.

Thank :)

While I haven't traded via my DVC plan I do own another non-disney timeshare and it is a weekly rental only.
You don't have to stay the entire week and usually ends up being cheaper to pay the exchange fee and use the week than stay at another location paying cash.

But your situation might be different so do the calculations. Sometimes even 3-4 days of the week usage it is cheaper to do the weekly trade.

Good luck getting your exchange. I've been trying for many years to exchange onto St. John in the USVI (only one resort) and have never had any luck!!

The websites will list resorts that are a member of RCI points and those that are not. Many RCI points members ONLY deposit full weeks so that part doesn't seem strange to me at all. Most options that are desirable will not have availability just sitting there so that there isn't anything when you call doesn't surprise me either. The way to be successful is to plan ahead (1-2 years) and put in an ongoing search.

I get 1 unit in Venice for all of RCI (it's in Jan 2013) and a handfull in the area. I did not cross reference to the DVC exchange list.

Since RCI starts booking 2 years out, 7 months is pretty much last minute for in-demand properties.

Doesn't sounds strange at all. I am an RCI weeks member (non DVC) and when I trade it is for weekly reservations only. Some RCI resorts have nightly rentals for cash but not trade. Sometimes, I book the week but only stay for 5 days. I have heard that DVC does not trade out well. Since I am not DVC I do not know that for a fact, however, I just looked for my Hawaii week and I can see 17 available units in January, 21 in February, 23 in March, 51 in Apri and 48 in May.
It could be that your trade is just not powerful enough. I'm not sure how RCI calculates the trading power of DVC. I know the units I see have TPU's of 8 - 17 and my Hawaii week is a 28. Good luck.
