My husband and I traded thru RCI to The Eastern Slope Inn in North Conway NH. We were speaking with the RCI coordinator and told her how much we are enjoying our stay and we definitely want to come back. Then she told us that there is a One in Four rule unless you own here. She said if you come from another resort thru RCI you can only stay here once every four years!!!!!!!

Has anyone ever heard of this? We were shocked!

Yes , that is a rule with RCI. The resort with rci want you to purchase with them. RCI wants as many families to stay at those resort as possible not the same guest.

When we traded our RCI points to stay at a Hilton property via RCI, we were subject to 1 in 4 since we are not Hilton owners. I think maybe we also heard the same when we stayed at Massanutten. It depends on the demand for the resort, too, I think. We have our RCI points at a resort near where you stayed and I know anyone who doesn’t own there is subject to the 1 in 4 rule, too.

Yep, the 1-in-4 (or 1-in-n as the years may vary) has been around for a long time. As mentioned above, a resort in active sales uses the feature to encourage you to buy from them to avoid the "take away." Rather, if you like that destination ... look to exchange into a different resort in the same area?

Edited to add: Another twist on this concept can be played by a resort group that offers many locations w/in its brand. In this variation, the "1-in-4" applies to the all resorts w/in the group. This is used by Grand Pacific Resorts, located primarily in Southern California. A non-owner can only exchange into the entire group once every four years.

Well, looks like you can pick up a contract for a week at that fine property for $1 on eBay. 😂

Yes. It is for specific properties. I don't believe it's RCI's rule per se. I think the resorts request the rule as part of their RCI contract. If you visit often, resorts want you to buy from them.
